Happy New Year!
(It's already New Year's Day here in the Far East)

I enjoyed Eric's Fall Foliage Fotos thread very much, looking at beautiful photos of various places, so I thought I'd start a new thread where members can share winter ride photos.
Here's a photo from the last ride in 2022.
We are having relatively little snowfall so far, and main roads are plowed and are mostly free of snow. No problem riding non-studded tires.

DSC02704.jpg

Hoping that we all can enjoy many, many kilometers of riding bikes this year!

I love winter cycling (when it’s not too icy). Thanks for starting this thread.

Here’s a small bit of me, along with my favorite new bike, stopped on an easy dirt road along the Croton Reservoir.

This photo isn't current - it's the middle of summer here in Australia - but it's my favourite photo of winter riding. Taken in the Brindabella Mountains to the west of here:

Dave,
Yes, winter cycling is as pleasing as autumn cycling. Your Gunnar seems to be a perfect machine to ride on dirt road!

Nick,
That's an unbelievably beautiful image! I can almost feel crisp air and dazzling sunlight.
I believe that it was very quiet out there?

Randy,
Glad that you were able to ride. I assume that winter in Wisconsin is very harsh.
Your photo, like Nick's, makes me think that it was very quiet.

Luke,

Spectacular views looking out across the bay over to San Francisco. A lookout place that I have never been to in all the years that I lived in the Bay Area; mostly South Bay Area.

What trail is this ?

Thank-you for sharing.

Joe – here’s to more rain over the next two weeks! Lovely photos.

Kim – this is at the top of Hawk Hill! One of my least-ridden routes but a favorite nonetheless.

John,
-1c is rather warm in your area, I guess? Looks like a lovely place to ride. Please keep posting!

Luke,
Ha! If you said the photo was taken in April I surely would have believed it.
Like Kim said it's a spectacular view. It should be quite a workout climbing there!

Joe,
Color of your bike looks very different in two photos.
Both look great, but especially beautiful in the morning (evening?) light!

Last January, on one of those rare sunny winter days on the Oregon coast.  This is my Surly Long Haul Trucker on the beach at Neskowin, Oregon during a round trip ride on the old highway between Otis and Neskowin.  The parts from this bike will soon to be transferred to a new Sam Hillborne.  I'm looking forward to repeating the ride this winter on the Sam.bike on beach.jpg

Nice photos, all; thanks for sharing. The closest thing we've gotten to snow here in high desert ABQ NM is a few flakes just now on the way back from the Post Office; in most years we've already had at least 1 decent snowfall, but this year the temps rose 10*F just as a storm blew precipitation in from the West; so we got a 2-3 days of light but extended rainfall. But we've got 3 months more to hope for. The more northerly parts and higher elevations did get snow; the Sandias were snow covered the other day.

Takashi, I have enjoyed seeing your images of Japan for years. Thank you. My wife and I enjoy watching the NHK program, "Cycling in Japan."       Here's an image of my brother-in-law on his Homer Hilsen in Albemarle County, Virginia, near Charlottesville. I love the way the shadows are long almost anytime of day in mid-winter.

Does it count as a winter ride if it was 46 degrees in Michigan today? Is it a spring ride? I don’t know what’s happening here. Last week, blizzard. This week, green grass and zero snow.

Roads were dry, temp was warm enough, so I pulled my Platypus from its perch on the wall and rode around the lake and the pond for 6.5 miles. A happy coincidence: my Bicycle Sentences journal arrived today, so I tossed it in the Sackville and now I have one entry for 2023 and it’s only Jan 4.

Carry on!

I love riding through those long winter shadows, and the way they blink past on a forest road ride. It's amazing how unique and recognizable the landscape of the eastern deciduous forest is! Even before I saw the mention of Midlothian, I wondered if the photo was from NC or VA. Nice shot!

So many great images!

Brian,
Spectacular view, and oh, those clouds pattern in the sky!
And your Sam is so cool; to my eyes it's perfect.

Paul,
Thank you, I'm glad to know that you enjoy my photos.
Looks like Virginia is a very beautiful place, I can almost feel crisp air and sweet smell of dry trees.

Leah,
Wow, blizzard to green in one week?
It gave you a chance to ride your beautiful Platypus, so it was a good thing, I believe.
Please post more photos!

Eric,
Was it dawn or evening? Either case, beautiful photo, as always. Looks like you had a very nice New Year's Day!
Paul's and Eric's photos make me wonder - doesn't Virginia have much snowfall?

Takashi,

Yes, this Platypus looks like an exotic thing on the barren landscape this time of year. We really did lose 2 feet of snow to warm temps in a week. Wild. I don’t have more ride photos yet but I do have a video I shot when winter arrived. I hope you can see it. I’ll attach my Instagram link below. I hope your winter continues to be mild so you can ride many miles, and I look forward to hearing about them. Your winter scenery looks gorgeous. The ice pillars!!!

My son is working hard on learning his Japanese. Maybe one day soon we will see that lovely countryside for ourselves.

Takashi,
To answer your question about snow in Virginia, generally we get less than we used to. (No surprise there.) Eric is less than 100 miles north of me, but we are both in Eastern/Central Virginia, more or less. The farther west in the state, the higher the elevation and that portion gets snow more often. Though, most of our area gets snow heavy enough to send snow plows out fewer than 2-3 times a year, generally.
Often, the snow is just deep enough to ride comfortably when fresh without a fat bike. I haven't done this trick since these photos in 2010, but for some dumb fun (and a workout) I went up to the local high school's football field and rode around the field in concentric circles (ellipses, I guess) on my single speed bike. The total mileage was nearly 10 miles!

A quick little, late afternoon jaunt on the Atlantis today after blowing snow off the driveway. Embracing the winter blues (and greys) with only just enough light to add a hint of color to the scene. At lower elevations, the forest was shrouded in a deep mist as the elk bugled their approval.
Cheers, John

Takashi — the picture was taken in the evening, returning from a short ride.

Nice snow pics, Dave!

Paul is right, we generally don't get a lot of snow. We definitely don't have snow on the ground all winter. We can get a big storm with a couple of feet every few years. Back in 1996 a blizzard rolled through and we were out of school for over two weeks. That sort of thing is rare.

What happens frequently is we get between 3" and 6" and we don't have the infrastructure or the driving knowledge to carry on and everyone does stupid stuff and they don't know how to drive and it's a real mess.

Last winter we got a really gross and scary storm. Not a lot of snow but it was very wet and heavy, unusual for our part of the country. A lot of stuff broke like streetlights and power lines and transformers, which is not typical. The snow also stuck to the foliage of evergreen trees in an unusual way and many, many trees were felled by the snow accumulation and lots of large branches lost. Just after the storm we could hear large branches snapping from pine trees at the park nearby, loud explosive cracks. The city and residents were still working on cleanup into the early summer.

Leah,
Thank you for the video, your Platypus with lots of lights is so fabulous!
It sure looks like Michigan is a tough place to ride bikes when there is heavy snowfall.
As someone commented cross country skiing might be fun.
Here's a photo from last year:

Paul,
Thank you. It's natural that higher, mountainous places get more snowfall.
West Virginia has more mountains? Now I understand why John Denver sang "West Virginia, Mountain Mama..."

Dave,
I agree with Eric, your photos are great!
" Sorry for the number of photo"
No, not at all. The more photos the better.
I scrolled through your Instagram posts, they're all beautiful!

John,
The monochrome-ish photo is a genuine "Winter Photo."
Maybe it's the high latitude that makes daytime shorter than in most places?

Eric,
It's same in Japan that places where there is little snowfall don't have infrastructure to handle snow.
Two inches of snow turns Tokyo into a chaos.

Moon was shining so brightly last night that I decided to revisit Shirakawa and take photos of ice pillars in moonlight.

To be honest, I "cheated" this time - drove my car to the place and rode my bike around for a short distance.
It was a fun ride though. Riding alone in moonlight, very silent, enjoying beautiful scenery.

Oh .... those are lovely Moonlight photos Takashi !  I agree that about riding by Moonlight ... really just being outdoors in some/any place quiet is itself magical. Better to have driven there that to not be there at all :-)

I like to call such illumination "The Midnight Sun" .... as truly ... The Sun never sleeps.

Mine aren’t so glamorous as the beautiful shots others have posted in this thread, but this was my Tuesday night ride this past week to catch the LA Metrolink train from Chatstworth to Simi Valley. I had needed the pannier to stow my small desktop tower PC to take it back in to work after our Xmas break, when I briefly have to check the systems each day.  Bike is a small Clem, bought as a frame and built up by me.

Get well! I've been riding, getting stuff in between the bouts of rain here in the Bay Area. We did a ride today, but I wasn't on my Roadini, since with all the mud off pavement I wasn't going to try riding off pavement today.  With trees and power lines down here and there, there are lots of road closures, but of course whenever I see one of those road closures, I always take the road because that means there are no cars. Today's ride went through a road that was closed because of a downed tree. Big problem for cars, no problems for cyclists: https://www.amazon.com/photos/shared/20mdGi-mTmqLNt3CzgepPg.UPriPwYAeuySDvHIUr8fF2  (sorry, you'll have to login or create an account with amazon to see the photos). Strava link: https://www.strava.com/activities/8361168853

With all the rain that's been forecast it doesn't look like I'll be riding off pavement until at least February.

Thank you Garth.
Yes, it was indeed "Midnight Sun." When I looked up and stared at the moon it was almost blinding.

Dorothy, riding in winter rain is much tougher than in snow IMHO.
And your Clem looks like the embodiment of what Grant was thinking when he designed them.

Jamin, they're beautiful photos!
Those steep mountains look very much like what we have here in Japan. Looks like quite a workout if you want to enjoy the view.

Ted, I'm sorry to hear that. And that's definitely a Winter Ride Foto!

Piaw, I was able to see photos without an Amazon account. That collapsed car!
I agree that riding a closed road is pleasant.

Thanks for posting everyone, the pictures are great. Winter in Chicago has overall been incredibly mild - I wish I had a more impressive photo, maybe me riding through a blizzard with a bus trying to run me off the road. I just got enough parts on my new Sam Hillborne to transform it from frame to bike and took it out on this calm and balmy (30F) morning. This is my first Rivendell, and apart from a Brooks that needs breaking in, it's an incredibly comfortable ride. Usually I go through an adjustment period to get used to a new bike, but this one felt fantastic right from the start. It's quicker than I expected, too. Anyway, I hope any other midwesteners out there are enjoying a similarly mellow and rideable winter.

I got out today for a ride with my newly built Sam Hillborne, thanks to a transfer of components from my 16 year-old Surly Long Haul Trucker, now retired.  It was one of those rare sunny winter days in Portland, but cold as heck and windy.  Picture is on historic Terwilliger Boulevard (Olmstead Brothers, landscape architects) with a peek at snowy Mt. Hood on the horizon.

Hoping that we all can enjoy many, many kilometers of riding bikes this year!

Thanks for great photos everyone!

Piaw, that's a cool-looking Roadini. Must be fun zipping through the pictured landscape.

Ryan, I agree with you, the view is worth the hard climb. Spectacular.

Cody, congrats on getting a new Sam! That silver is so beautiful.
Glad to know that your Sam is already comfortable. Please keep posting photos!

Luke, I assume there were no cars due to that fallen tree. Looks like a very quiet ride.

Brian, the picture with crispy fallen leaves is very winter-ish.
Looks very cold, did you have a good sleep?

Jock, wow, that rainbow! Thank you for sharing.

MoVelo, your bike looks like a very useful machine, and a perfect one to ride on a road like that.

Jason, great picture as always, catching the atmosphere so well that I almost feel like being there.

Eric, as others commented in another thread, that's a beautifully restored bike.
And I love that you are taking it to that beautiful place right after building it.

Slin, that's a beautiful Platypus. Looks like a warm day?

Luke, that's a spectacular view. I assume it's very cold on a windy day.

Ted, now THAT's a winter ride foto! That white road looks like inviting the cyclist to ride as far as possible.

Matti, oh, another happy new Sam rider! That green color, along with shiny fenders and a classy front bag, looks great.
Enjoy many miles on it!

We had some snowfall last night and today:

Unfortunately, it was just a short trail … and I’m sure the skiers were happy for me not to be on it much. We received another 15cm of snow after that, so I think my tracks were covered.

Agreed! I have a green Sam being built up in Los Angeles for me, and as much as I enjoy winter riding, I’m looking forward to getting to LA in March and enjoying my new Sam in some warmer weather :-)

We had some snowfall last night and today:
Wow, such a beautiful valley!  The snow bank your bike is in makes me think of the biggest problem I have with winter riding, which is that the roads get a lot narrower so the cars get closer.

Here are two pictures from a wet ride yesterday in Virginia with Paul, Ian, Greg, Chip, Lynn and Eric. We bailed on a longer 40ish mile figure eight and finished up with 24 country miles around Caroline County.

Pictured here are Ian and Paul's Homers. Also pictured is an adult red eastern screech owl we saw planted on the road. Curiously it didn't fly off when we rode by. It seemed a bit dazed and dangerously out in the right of way. Greg inched near it with his bike and it flew away.

Not quite as adventurous as some other entries, but here are the only two pictures I took on a ride out of Angels Camp in the “Gold Country” foothills south of Sacramento:

The stone building is the “Italian Store” in Douglas Flat, built in 1851 during the Gold Rush.

Riv content: I was riding my Rivendell Road, recently repaired by local framebuilder Steve Rex, who re-brazed a broken seatstay/seat lug junction for me. Photos shot on film with a Voigtlander Bessa L and Kodak Tri-X.

Not to leave Eric Marth out of the Sunday wet winter Caroline County, Va. ride photos, this was his Sam Hillborne at rest during the brief snack break. He could have fit a dozen of those cute little Eastern Red Screech Owls into that Fabio's Chest for the ride home!

Got my first film camera last year, slowly taking photos. I like taking the camera out when I ride. Newish to NY, my first winter here has been thankfully mild so far. These are from a ride in mid December up across the gw bridge. Sorry for the lack of riv, just have this one up here for now until I can figure out how to store more bikes in this tiny apartment town.

Looks like a beautiful day for a ride! Unfortunately I had to bail on my intended route because the snow got deep. Then batted a strong headwind with gusts that almost took me off the bike several times. The miles with the wind at my back were nice and easy at least!

Hello Kim. Too soon to tell. I have yet to complete the build. I am waiting on cables. It is complete enough for me to pedal (slowly!) around the driveway & down the street to check fit & get a feel for it. I think I am very close - it feels very familiar. I am trying to duplicate my position / touch points from the Clem. It’s a bit tricky going back & forth between bikes with measurements. The Gus sits higher off the ground - higher bottom bracket & bigger wheels. Same saddle on both bikes, B17. Bosco bars on both, 550 steel on the Clem, 580 aluminum on the Gus. Saddle position nearly identical on both bikes. Gus is longer so I have a shorter stem (parts bin) on it - 80mm vs. 135mm on the Clem. I think I need a 100mm for the Gus as the reach to the tips is about 2.5cm shorter on the Gus. All that said, it feels fantastic. I am very optimistic that it will be a blast to ride on the MTB trails I frequent. When mounting the Gus I do miss the true step through Clem. I need to work on my hip flexibility! But the Gus feels a bit stiffer which I think is a good thing for singletrack.

After a few snow events gave me the opportunity to give the fatbike some ride time, a January thaw to end the month meant my first ride of February was back on the Platypus.

@ All: Not as sexy as the snow photos many of y'all are sharing, but here is a Quickbeam glamour shot,* last night braving 25 MPH gusts whipping off the Hudson River.  Brrrrr!   https://www.flickr.com/photos/millhiser/52673897739

@ Steven: I'm also a NYC rider (Quickbeam "illegally" stashed in condo stairwell) and a film photographer (the Sackville trunksack always carries a 1984 Leica M6). Ted,
The place I took the photo is about 5-minute ride from my room.
Snow is mostly disappeared now.
Snow bank indeed makes road narrower, but I ride mostly on non-busy back roads, so no problem.

Slin, I'm pretty sure that your wife will love that beautiful Platypus!

Eric Marth,
Good ride with friends AND seeing an owl very close. What's not to like??
And photos in your latter post are also beautiful. It doesn't look like winter except for the 3rd photos with ice in it.

Eric Norris,
I second Paul's comment that your photos make me feel like I'm there. It's always very interesting to see historical buildings during a ride.

Paul, thanks for photo of Eric's Hillborne. That's indeed a gigantic bag!

Stephen, film photos have different atmosphere from digital ones, and yours are so great!
I also live in a tiny apartment room with 2 bikes in it. I'm interested in A Homer Hilsen but no more room.

Ryan, riding in strong wind (headwind or tailwind) must have been very cold.
But looking at that blue sky, I also would have hopped on my bike.

Richard, that bike looks like a perfect choice for having fun on snow!

Dave, great photos as always! Monochrome image highlights interesting patterns of tree shadows.

Will, although there are no snow in the photo, it surely looks like a very cold day!

I was in Davis, CA, yesterday, so I took the opportunity to head out to the graffiti-covered Stevenson Creek Bridge with my ’97 Riv Road Standard. Shot these on Kodak Tri-X with a Canon Snappy LX camera. The Baggins/Nitto front bag combo arrived a little while ago from another list member. The seat bag has been adorning a series of bikes since 2005, and has been pretty much everywhere.

This morning, I pedaled my Gus up the beach to check out a sailboat that washed up over the weekend. Sorry it’s not a “wintry” photo per se, but I thought it made for a nice Winter bike memory…

Thanks everyone! There's kind of an interesting story behind that sailboat that I've since learned about; the two occupants had to be rescued by our local Coast Guard station. I know nothing about sailing, but the day it washed up was definitely NOT a day you would've wanted to be out on the water in any type of craft. Why they were out in open water that day is beyond me. I have no idea how a boat like that gets unbeached, but I'm hoping to find out soon! I'm fascinated to know the process.

Well, at the risk of taking this pretty far off topic ... I have a fair amount of experience here ... people very often overestimate their skills and underestimate the conditions on the water. A crew of two on that boat could pretty quickly be overwhelmed and may have had some kind of equipment failure.  In particular, if they lost their engine, couldn't set an appropriate amount of sail, and didn't have a sea anchor, they had no chance.

To put this sort of on topic ... it's not that far off from cycling in challenging conditions and terrain. Knowing how to anticipate and deal with changing conditions and keep yourself safe (and having the right equipment) is a skillset that needs to be developed.

Removal from the beach depends on how much extra tide there was in the storm. From the photo it looks like they will probably be able to pull the boat back to deeper water with a normal high tide, probably waiting for a full moon for a little extra, and hoping for not much wind. Power boat off shore, a couple of lines to the bow, spin it so the bow is pointing out and slide it across the sand.

I have heard great things!  Unfortunately I don’t have any grandchildren living there.

Thank you Randy. WI landscapes are very exotic to my eyes. Variety is always good.

John, now that's a very exotic tree.
Reminds me of works by Central and South American artists I saw somewhere, maybe in a book or a TV program.

Eric, great photo as always. Your bike looks so handsome bathing in winter sunlight.

Brian, that should've been a rare chance! The photo looks almost unreal, like a move set; maybe pink clouds in background makes me think so.

Ted, thank you for sharing your insight. Yes, it seems that sailing and cycling have some things in common, especially about making decision in a bad situation.
This is a photo from 2006 when I made a bad decision and had a very hard time underbiking on snow.

Rich, winter or spring, that looks like a beautiful day to ride. And the color of your Hillborne matches the beauty of your surroundings very well.

I went for a 40km loop in the valley north of my home yesterday, it was about 7C and I was staying along the river at the bottom of the valley, so fresh snow hadn't crossed my mind as a possibility. Despite the temps, it did in fact snow a bit overnight, though it was struggling to stick to the relatively warm ground. Thankfully my farthest point of the loop was right where the snow was starting to really affect grip, and was back on snowless terrain not long after.

Jason,
Snowfall in 7C, that must be heavy and damp snow. I'm glad that you were able to go ride and share your wonderful photo.
Your photo makes me want to sit on that wooden chair for hours.

I doubt if we have any more snowfall here this winter.
The photo I took today already looks like early spring.

Well, it's officially still winter here in Dallas,TX. although yesterday I met up with a friend at White Rock Lake in mid-70's breezy temps and enjoyed a ride.

I'm on my 1981 Austro Daimler Puch Vent Noir II and he's on his about 3 year old Homer Hilson.

It was a good day to be out and about.

Like Takashi, we've had a warm spell here and all my February rides have been spring like.

Here's the Platypus out a few days ago:

And from yesterday, my doublespeed Volpe that is recently sporting Albatross bars:

Today we are back to winter as we got some snow overnight and have colder temps in the forecast for the next week or so.

No snow, no trees even, but this is what loading up on groceries before the cold snap in the northeast a couple of weeks ago looked like:D4FE0A86-0253-4B41-A999-5D1A808662AE.jpeg

Out ‘n about here with no snow to speak of in the Connecticut River Valley of western Massachusetts, where it was 57 degrees on Monday, George Washington’s Birthday, with maple syrup flowing. I don’t yet own a Rivendell but I’ve got a few British bikes that probably ride that way, like my 1996 Mercian Vincitore.

Russell,

I'm sure you enjoyed the "balmy" temperature for your winter ride on Monday. From one Mercian owner to another, your Vincitore looks terrific!

Best,
