Thanks for all the tips everyone gave in my previous post asking for Randonneuring advice. I put much of it to use today and had a successful ride. The forecast called for 100% chance of rain showers. We got a few minor sprinkles, lots of clouds and a decent amount of sunshine. I came prepared for 100k of riding in a downpour. Instead I should have wore sunscreen. No bonk or nutrition/cramp issues... I believe largely thanks to tips from the list. My goal was to finish in 6 hours (a little over 10mph average) and I got my card signed at 5:55. Perhaps I could have pushed myself and gotten a slightly better time but that would have eaten into my breaks, conversations, and scenery gazing. I don't really feel the need to jump right into the longer brevets but it's likely I'll be back for more 100k rides.

My control card proved it happened, but it's on it's way to France. These pics will have to suffice.

cheers, Smitty

What did you end up doing about food?

All stuff I normally eat... but a couple bites at a time throughout the ride... fruit, jerky, cookies, nuts, chocolate, and cheese. I added an Nuun tablet to one of my water bottles. and I had a can of V8 a little after halfway through.

I think the best advice I got was about 1) diet... only eating what I'm used to eating. and 2) pace myself. I followed both and was amazed how fresh and able to keep riding I was at the end. My biggest fear was that I'd be dragging myself the last miles to the finish. Fact is that I went for a ride with my family to get burgers and ice cream when I got home.

The Popularie experience sort of reminded me of the long distance hiking experience. All these people are doing the same route but equipment and styles of travel are across the board. We naturally gravitate toward/ end up traveling/ crossing paths with those who's style is similar to our own. Camaraderie ensues.

Also similar to LD hiking... the scenery was pretty but the real beauty of the experience was interacting with the people on and along the ride.

I'm going to quote you to that. Pictures and ride report are truly
inspiring. Looking forward to sfrando pop soon

Congratulations. Beautiful photos. I consider your ride a challenge to
myself -- must start doing some longer rides -- need a derailleur
bike! --Well, I have the Fargo but I think I will multi-speed-ify one
of the Rivs. S3X? AW? Derailleur? We'll see. I've been riding the
Fargo because of my injured right hand (can't operate the right-only
brake on the Rivs) but perhaps will change one of the Rivs over to
LHB.

Well, you've had several derailleur bikes in the past, including IIRC
two Rivendells. Ah, if only they hadn't been vandalized, and all the
fittings necessary for derailleur operation hadn't been Dremeled off!

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. But I have enjoyed the fixed gear riding, so
no regrets.

It *IS* possible to do non-destructive, easily reversible fixed gear
conversions.

Smitty, glad you enjoyed the ride. I was bummed I couldn't be out
riding but was instead stuck at work. I'll definitely be at the 200k
and I hope you show up for that. It's a new route this year and looks
great. Cant say how hard it'll be but there's sure to be plenty of
good company. Thanks for taking and posting the pictures.

Yeah, hey Patrick, since you have been considering spending some money on a Roadeo or an RB-1, maybe you could spend that money on having the following work done on one of your Rivendell frames:

Get a frame-builder to add a derailleur hanger.
Get some cable stops and guides brazed on for shift cables
Get new paint

It sounds like a bike that would fit the bill for what you've been after in a derailleur bike.

Can I get some details on that map case you are using?  I'm looking at an event next month and am thinking I'll need something similar.

Excellent!  Sounds like you found the perfect pace!

Just a word on sunscreen - I find that if I just put it on when kitting up before a ride (especially those that start in pre-dawn hours), then when things turn nice, I don't have to stop to put it on.  Now, granted, I am reasonably fair-skinned and ride in the SF Bay Area - the Queen of the Microclimates - so things can go from nordic/steppes to arid/scorching within a few miles. That also keeps me from simply forgetting to put it on.

Congrats on a great ride!

My que-sheet holder is the Map Case from Riv. It was super great to have the directions right there. Many of the rando riders had some variation... often on top of their front bag.

Hey that's me! I'm on the orange XO-1 with the yellow jacket. Andy's request for advice and the corresponding tips got me off the couch to go on my first Rando as well. All the folks we met were super nice and the roads were in good shape. No issues with traffic. Unfortunately, I had some major leg cramps at about mile 45 and was ready to hitch hike back to the car. But thanks to Andy's encouragement and willingness to hang back (and a bottle of Gatorade) I was able to spin out the last 17. I agree that I'll probably not do the longer events. 100k seems just about right.

Glad you had a good day of it.  Sometime when you feel up to it, try one of the longer rides.  In my experience, there's something that happens somewhere out beyond the edge of way-past-the-furthest-distance-that-you-thought-you-could-go that is really special, and that just doesn't happen on the shorter rides.  Riding through a day and then a night and watching the sun come up is an experience unlike any other.  And it just isn't the same to start a ride before dawn and watch the sun come up.  Being out there for multiple days and nights has an addictive quality.

Best,

Nick

I love to go on longer distance rides but never had a chance to participate in an organized ride like that.  It looks like quite a fun time.
