A question about bottom brackets for the Susie Longbolts:

I got a Tange LN-3922 73 x 127 bottom bracket cartridge for my Susie. I wasn’t thoroughly reading the comments that mentioned this BB was recommended ... for a Rivendell Silver crank. However, I’m using an older SR XD2 “wide x low” 40 — 26 crankset (with chain guard). The 127 turns out to be way too wide for a good chain line with the SR.

A 122mm BB (American Classic Sealed w/adjustable chainline) that I tried still puts the crank arms about 15mm (L) to 17mm (R) away from the chain stays.
The 26 tooth inner has about 10mm clearance to the right chain stay. Tread or “Q” factor is about 179mm.
I’m thinking I need the Tange 118 cartridge or the 115.5.

Anyone have experience with using the XD2 crankset on the new Susie (or Gus)? My frame is a medium (53).
What bottom bracket did you use?

Thanks,

David, I always consult this chart when tinkering with Shimano/Tange cartridges as the offsets can vary from size to size quite a bit. From what you say I myself would be inclined to go with the 113, given that your 40t middle ring has the same or more clearance than your 26t.

Yes, I’ve looked at that online, think I first saw it on eBAY.
Printed it out.
I’ll pull the American Classic, put the 127 back in for reference and back calculate the offsets.
A few places have the 113.

Thanks much!

For the Sugino XD2 I've used 110mm on an Atlantis and 107 on a 130mm rear spaced roadbike. 110 or 113 on a Mtn Bike. I believe the Rivendell Silver has the same requirements.

Keep in mind this is a 73mm shell. A 115 or 118 is probably the ticket.

On my susie (53cm) I am using the 127x68 shimano b/b (but with a 73mm cup on the left side).

Hi David.  FYI I did some experimenting on my Susie and a 73 x 122 seemed to  give good chainline and good (albeit tight/but acceptable IMO) clearance with a 29 x2.8 tire.

(This is with a Silver crankset but if I'm not mistaken they spec the same BB length for a standard triple so they should be very close....)

I think part of your answer depends on your tire choice...

Hope that helps!

Cheers,

Alex in Rochester NY

I'm using 73x110 bottom bracket on my small (50cm) Susie, with these crankset: https://www.rivbike.com/collections/cranks-bbs/products/crank-kahlfn5454jg

Not sure how similar it is to XD2, but the chain line looks good in almost all of the gear combinations I typically use.  I've attached a few pictures for reference.  The tire is Schwalbe Almotion 2.15"

Digging up a old thread here but was hoping to get some answers on my current susie lugged build. I have purchased a white industries 73x113mm BB to pair them up with paul 100% cranks. I am going with a 1x12 system, i am confused on which offset chainring i need to get the correct chain line. When i look at pauls chart its recommending i need -3 or -6 offset to achieve a 49mm or 52mm chain line. Which in todays standards is very odd as most chainrings are 0, 3, 6mm. Any suggestions on this? I attached a photo of Pauls chart, thank you!

Bryan, Can you state exactly the makes and models of hubs and cassettes ? Road, mtb or gravel ?

Otherwise measuring the rear chainline is pretty easy. https://bike.bikegremlin.com/1755/bicycle-chainline/#32-measuring-rear-chainline
Then just match the crank chainline as close as possible. I know from measuring my 135mm rear Bombadil with a 9sp cassette on a Deore T610 hub, the chainline is about 45mm.
