Howdy,

Grant wrote about this a few blahgs ago.  I am intrigued, but a bit hesitant to put down $120 without having some idea of the style of the sweater that is being produced.  At the same time, I love the color, and the concept.  I also remember that Grant did a collection of wool sweaters a few years ago that I skipped, but in hindsight wish I had purchased.

Anyway, here is a link to the sweater:  Cheviot Wool Sweater Preorder

If you have placed your order I would love to know your reasoning for doing so.

If any of you remember the previous wool sweaters that Riv. produced, do you recall if that was done on a pre-order basis as well?  I'm curious what might happen to the price of this sweater after the pre-order period has ended.

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts.

I'm in.  First reason -- I simply want to support Rivendell; I want it to continue serving our passionate community for years to come.  I'm more than willing to take a $120 chance.  Second -- I can always use a great wool sweater.  Third, trusting Grant with the wheels I ride on is much more risky than trusting him with his taste in sweaters.  So, I'm all in.

I don't believe there has ever been a pre-order for Riv clothing, but of course I could be wrong. I don't think it's so much a price thing--get a discount for early ordering. He made it very clear that they need to buy a fairly big quantity (200?) and so before even doing so, needed to get a commitment for a decent amount. That said, it might go up a few bucks, or they might not get more, or I suppose there is a chance it might not happen if too many people hesitate.

RBW has done pre-orders for wool jerseys in the past...back when they did the nice embroidered RBW jerseys.
cheers,
Andrew

Yes, the previous wool sweater thing was pre-order, too, I bought one.

I stand corrected.(Although technically not really, since I did admit I could be wrong!;^) Anyway, nothing beats riding around town in a nice wool sweater from a nice company, right? So I am going to order one. The natural wool colors shouldn't  clash with the Clem L frameset I am still hoping to score.

STILL wish I had bought the derby tweed sweater when I had the chance.

Appreciate the comments.  Like Ginz, I wish that I had purchased the previous Riv derby tweed sweaters.  I don't want to miss-out again.  However, I am a bit concerned about buying sight-unseen.  I do want to support Riv, and I tend to trust Grant and his decisions.  I might as well do the same with this.  If worse comes to worse, I'll have a warm-ish, but unattractive sweater to wear outside on my bike, X-C  Skiing, raking leaves, etc.

Anybody have any insight into the style of sweater this will be?  A simple crew neck sweater in wool would certainly work for me.

I'm in.
Partly because I was needing a new, "nice", sweater anyway, partly because I already own and love a Riv sweater; the wooly pully commando sweater from a few years back.
Pre-orders aren't a big deal to me, I'll either get the sweater or my money back, so no concerns there. I trust Grants style sense enough to know I'm not going to end up with something out of a sci-fi movie, or something that's been deliberately slimmed down; which, let's be honest here, I'm heavy enough I already look like a sausage wearing a shirt anyway.

I'm just guessing, but I suspect it will be a pretty simple pull-over sweatshirt-style, just using the yarn and colors that Grant has spec'd. I'd be good with that. It's a classic look.
250 is the minimum order on this, IIRC. I hope they are able to make it happen.
If you want one, get it. You won't be disappointed.

To be honest the description and color didn’t sound appealing to me. However, regret is a bitter pill to swallow....so I ordered anyway. Looking forward to being pleasantly surprised and it’s always nice to have something on the horizon.

From the insider intel I received when reserving mine today, they have over 200 pre-ordered, so looks like these will be definitely happening. My once a year clothing indulgence (long underwear excepted). Remember, add another 30 bucks to your order when they come in but before they go out and get free shipping. Good time for the Riv sundries with the holidays approaching!

Excellent point, Mark. I pre-ordered mine the other day.

I love pre-orders. It's like a gift I sent to myself from the past, because I've usually forgotten that I ordered it.

Thanks for all of your comments.  I placed my pre-order this morning.  I will now eagerly await the next tidbit from RBW about this project.

David - great tip about adding $30 to the order to get free shipping.

Cheers,
Sean

Mark gets the credit for the tip! I can only take credit for the time-traveling memory loss thing.

It's like a form of anticipation, but as an adult, you can't hold that anticipation nearly as long; anticipating for weeks the last day of school, the night before Christmas. Remember when it was "4-6 weeks for delivery" for stuff on the back of the cereal box? But we don't have time for anticipation any more. And anyway, there's probably an app to do it for us.

Or maybe it's more like finding a twenty in the suit jacket you haven't worn since the last wedding...or, at my age, funeral.

Sean,

How did you do this?  The preorder page said specifically to not add anything else to the order, and instead to fill out a separate order for additional items (hence triggering 2 shipping charges, instead of zero).  Did I miss something?

David,
That way that I understand this pre-order, is that I purchased and paid-for a sweater.  A delivery charged was added to my order.  If I understand this process correctly (and I may not!), Riv will contact those who have pre-ordered when the sweaters arrive.  At that point (I believe / hope . . . ) we will have the opportunity to add additional items to the order - taking us beyond the total purchase needed to earn free shipping.

Hopefully list members who have done this before can chime-in and let me (us) know whether I am correct in my understanding.

Yep, that's how it works. What you can't do is make a full order for delivery now with the sweater as a "to be delivered later" part of that order.

Get your pre-order locked in and paid for now, then ad to the cart when the sweater is ready.

Thanks, Sean, Joe, and Mark.  I'm glad to know this.  About how to do it, that is, not about them being "sold out," whatever that means for an order yet-to-be-placed.

Dave
