Looking for a 60cm Platypus. Would like to buy just a frame but might do a whole bike.
Would be nice to find one in mid-Atlantic area. Shipping is a pain
Have some bikes to trade or will buy.
Don’t know when the next batch is coming in.

Richard — This is a frame timeline from a recent email update, Platys are slated for July but delays might be inevitable. Call Rivendell for the latest! They might also know of a dealer with a spare frame.

I checked out these two already. One on the left coast won't ship and the guy in NJ wants more than the bike is worth. To me anyway.
Still kicking myself in the ass for not buying the one Riv had at the Phill Bike Expo.

The NJ one seems fairly priced to me with the racks, but it's a lot of cash if you'd really rather build up a frame yourself. The other one at $2100 for a complete is bonkers! I'm surprised it's still there.

I agree that NJ one is way overpriced. Looking at the specs I think you could have a new one built the same way with those accessories for less than the asking price. I don't see any way that cost anywhere near $4800 new.

California Platy Has been sold. NJ bike is in a shop on consignment. I think the shop owner is trying to make a big commission on it. It is a standard build with Deore hub wheels with $500 worth of racks. Way over priced.
I told him if the price came down to 3K I would be interested it.
I can wait. I have too many bikes as it is.  I was hoping to shake one loose from somebody on the list.

Well if we're going to keep arguing then I guess I'll argue. That Platy starts at 1750, if you add all the parts and are looking to sell a hard-to-get new model for a new price - a dubious endeavor, but in this market possible - then the price matches. No he didn't pay 4800, I'm just saying the asking price is fair in this market. You don't want to pay it and I wouldn't either, but I suspect someone will offer a bit less and buy it. That's my story.

I added up components and the current price is a "new" price or actually a tad more. Most of the components are budget or middle of the road. I guess if you are unwilling to wait maybe you would pay at or above the new sell price to get it quick but then again its been listed for awhile and bikes priced well don't sit for that long these days.

Yes, I specified he's aiming for an "as new" (including SaddleSack) sale to somebody who really wants one and will pay it. I think it's fairly priced for that niche, there's just not that many Platys in the world yet. No I don't think he'll get every dollar he's asking for. Is all I'm saying.

I bought the Platy in NJ yesterday. Went up to take a look yesterday. Offered him 3K cash and he bit.
Bike is like new, been ridden maybe 100 miles or so. It was my birthday, so I treated myself.
Came home, ate lunch, set seat post height and went for a ride. Ride report to follow.

Glad to hear you landed the NJ Platy! For a great deal none the less! Like Eric said, we want photos!

And now that you've secured one I feel that I can speak up to being the one who snagged the CA Platy, it was about a 12 hour round trip to pick it up but it's safe and sound in the shop now, I'll add photos only after you do, I don't want to take away from your excitement.

First ride on the Platy was nice. Did a 18 mile ride through a local state park. half paved and half not. This bike is a keeper. I wasn't sure how the low gearing would work for me but it was great. If someone told me a few years ago a 38/24 crankset and a 11-36 cassette would be a good combo, I wouldn't have believed it. Some first impressions...
Took me a few shifts to get back in the friction mode after mostly index shifting the last few years. The wheelbase is Loooog, 125mm
I like to look down to see what cog I'm occasionally and found I had to look dow and bend over to see the gears.
Didn't like the B67 Brooks. Too wide for my ass. Going to swap it out for a B17 or a Team Pro
Told my wife on the way home from Jersey, I can ride this bike off into the sunset. Now I really do have too many bikes.
Big purge coming. Some candidates are-
62 Sam Hillborne
63cm Casati
60cm Velo Orang Polyvalent
Send me a PM if you are interested in any of these bikes. I'll post an add when I get a chance.

Hi Roberta!  Can you put your finger on how the Platy ride differs from the Appaloosa? That is, if you can remember your old Appaloosa days.

That's a hard one, since they all shine individually.

The Appa with 650b wheels had a shorter wheelbase (45" for the 51cm) vs the Platy 700c  (47" for the 55).  The Appa felt more "planted" and stable (more like it was sure of itself), while he Platy has a bit more on the "fun" side, a little flexy perhaps and I love the step thru.  If I were riding off road more, I'd prefer the Appa.  Since my rides are nearly on road, the Platy is fantastic.
