Hello All,

I'm nearing completion of my Atlantis rebuild and wanted to share it with you all. I'm tempted to shellac the bar tape to match the chainstay protector but i've heard that this can give the tape a rough texture ? (i haven't done this before). I have some metal fenders coming and plan to add  Riv fender flaps (gray and leather if i can ever find them). I wanted to have enough clearance for my fenders but when i raised the straddle high enough I wasn't a fan of the performance with the touring style cantis. I also wanted a front rack for that beautiful Berthoud bag that i got from a group member. So implemented a Suntour Power Hanger and am very pleased with the braking power and aesthetic. I was really nice to get rid of the headset cable stop as well. I've run one of these in the past and the cable entered on the other side so i'm wondering if i got some weird british/motocross style where the front brake is routed from the right. It works well enough but looks better with the other style. Also, shout out to Hunter Nugz for easy brake adjustment and VO for their integrated decaleur (i had difficulty finding one that could handle the relatively short bag height and high handlebar).

Enjoy! Totally open to any suggestions or recommendations if you would improve on the build in any way.

In my experience when just a few coats of shellac are used it can feel rough.  I always do many coats, 7,8 or more until it feels smooth.
The longest to dry is the first coat, after that dry time is quicker as you put on more coats. My shellacked bars are very smooth.

Good luck, nice looking bike.

I’m going to take the plunge and shellac the bars too. I really like the color of the chainstay protector.

Also digging the bronze accents (Thanks Erik) The bronze rims work better than I expected.

Hi Eliot,

I am really impressed with your Suntour Power Hanger application.  It is very clean and a shiny silver ! After seeing it, I want one.
Is there a dramatic or a significant improvement in stopping power ?
Is the Power Hanger just for the front forks only ?

Thank-you,

I don’t think that the power is better than a perfectly optimized straddle cable. It does seem better than I expected for that amount of clearance though. It could be my imagination but the fork  mounting also feels more solid. Some describe reduced brake chatter. I also like the longer housing run but wish it was the same direction as my old setup. Highly recommend getting one with a left side stop. You can see the cable angle is a little odd for its pull on the Atlantis.

Is it not symmetrical? Can't you just remove the hardware and flip it?

Yes Bryce, you are right . I realized that after I posted. I don’t think it would work with the Paul’s anyway since the cable bolt is on the right arm.

@Eliot -
...interesting. I think I stay with what I have in the way of braking, Dia Compe 980 cantilever brakes on my Clem.
Thank-you for the details.

Those are beautiful Kim. I’m also not sure how well the wide profile cantis work with a power hanger since the wide angle likes a higher straddle.

Thanks. Good case and point. Furthermore, I am not sure if the Power Hanger would interfere with a pair of Honjo Flat 65 fenders as a last upgrade for this fall and winter.

As a suggestion for your build, Monarch pedal wings (side extensions) from Rivendell:

They won't make your Atlantis fly, but I am absolutely certain that your feel will be solid on the pedals more so. Just watch out for your shins with the spikes. 20230205_142159 (2)aa.jpgYou can add more spikes to them as well, like I did.

Interesting. I imagine my wide feet would like that

@Eliot -
The addition of the extended wings to your pedals would most definitely help your wide feet with the added pedal spikes for stability and sure footedness.

I wear an old pair of leather Merrell Moab Rovers with Vibram shoes. They grip the pedal surfaces very well for me without any complaints even in the rain and cold weather. There's no wear to be seen from the pedal spikes on the soles after riding.

For my next project, I'm thinking of finding a square piece of aluminum to cut and fit into the pedals assembly to extend the pedals length wise, two per side, after all my fall and winter preparations around my house are done. I've seen pictures of walnut wood as insert extensions. I want to do something different.

May I suggest another item for your build. These would make a real nice bling:

I’m going to give it some more time and see how it dries and if it grows on me but it seems to be yellowing and I don’t love the look of that.

Yeah the avocado look wasn’t doing it for me. I think some dark gray tape or black leather sounds good. Glad this peeled off easy.

Good move on your decision to go with handlebar tape. I agree, Eliot .

Hi Eliot,

What a difference of change you made to your bike !  Excellent job. You are matching the black from the handlebars all the way down to the feet of the double kickstand. Very nice.

XTR drive train - very cool

What is your inner chain ring count ?

That cable housing you are using... is it any better than the standard Jagwire housing ?

Suggest buying some helicopter tape for your drive train chain stay underneath your protective piece of rubber ?
This is what I bought for my Clem. I am very happy with the product.

Looking good on that hill overlooking the water...

I think it’s a 40/24 setup with a 11/32 cassette. This was my first ride in this configuration and it might be too low for me. I spend a lot of time in the top 1/3 of the gear range. The low gears were nice for the hills though.

The housing I’m using I got from Velo Orange. It looks nice. It works. I’m not sure it’s better than Jagwire.

I am fighting with the front fender rattling. I suspect I need to put some helicopter tape under the fender stays between the fender and the stays. Driving me nuts. Should have gone for a more expensive stainless fender. These cheaper aluminum ones don’t feel as nice as the Berthouds I had on the Surly.

The XTR drivetrain is sweet. It’s my first time running a rapid rise with friction. I like it. I can see why GP is a fan. Looking forward to the Silver Derailleur.

Hi Eliot,

My hope is that you find the proper gearing that is most comfortable for you, yet have some climbing gears.

With my success of the addition of the Avid Micro-adapter and a 20T chain ring on the 74bcd along with a 34T ring on the 110bcd and a 11-40T SunRace cassette in the back, I am quite pleased.

I had to change out the Shimano M952 rear derailleur with the long elbow extension to another M952 rear derailleur here the other day. I was having trouble out on the Willapa Hills Trail this past Saturday. It was not shifting properly. Now it shifts a lot better.

I had a pair of Bethoud steel fenders on my Surly Long Haul Trucker. They were some very stout and sturdy fenders.

I tried the rapid rise derailleur by Shimano a long time ago. After so many years of road riding, I did not like it. I am glad to hear that you do.

I have in my parts drawer both the XTR front and rear derailleurs. They are very nice.

Kim Hetzel.

Beautiful! I’ve never seen a silver xtr derailleur, and it’s rapid rise? I’m on the hunt for one now!

Cheers, John

I'll agree with others, that is a very nice looking Atlantis!  Which model of XTR derailleur are you using?   I thought most of the earlier XTR derailleurs were grey, but that definitely looks shiny.   I have been hunting for a silver rear derailleur for a custom build, and new ones are pretty hard to come by.  Everything that will shift a broader range now only seems to come in black. I just found out yesterday that I am #2 in line, and #1 is not returning calls, so finding some key parts just became more urgent.  That might work if I can find one!
Thanks!

It’s the m960 version which is a polished rapid rise and one of the last versions of their 9 speed. I have a medium cage that I will be posting shortly which I would imagine could shift an 11/32.
