I said on the Bike Style thread I’m always on the lookout for riding pants, and Riv mentioned an update and restock to their MUSA pants in the newsletter. I was excited to read they got rid of the PFAs in the clothing, no small feat as PFAs plague most activewear. I suppose glowing reviews + no forever chemicals pushed me into ordering pants that seem designed for men.

The size small looks like it will be big on me, but who knows, maybe they will be stylishly relaxed. There are a lot of reviews online about the splendor of Riv’s MUSA pants, but I don’t think any of them were written by women.

If you’re a woman reading this, and you have these pants, please tell me if they fit you and if they look good. Yes, they must look nice. I’m not wearing pants only for function; I like to be darling.

If you’re a man reading this and you have these pants, I’d also welcome your input. Maybe have the woman in your life model them so you can tell me if I’ve just made a bad purchase?

Ok, gotta run but I’ll check back later tonight. Thanks for your help!
Leah

Hi Leah,

I'm definitely interested in hearing how those MUSA pants work for you!

Meanwhile, if you want another great pair of pants, I'd sure recommend the ones I have 3 pairs of: Wild Rye Freyahs.  (Wild Rye is a "1% for the Planet", B Corp-certified and climate neutral-certified company owned by women whose stated goal is to create beautiful and technical clothes for women who bike and ski, etc.) I've worn them on rides every day for the last 2 weeks...They are Platypus-compatible, ha!

Have a great week...and thanks for posting. You're always so much fun!

Sally

Hi Leah,

I have been looking at these pants for so long now and have the exact same concern. I just emailed James at Riv and asked for the seat measurement (this is the hardest part of pant fit for me..soccer thighs..now biking thighs?) If you purchased them would you care to share a photo if they fit how you like or not?

Anyway, lately I have resorted to biking in Everlane's straight leg crop (their barrel pant is nice too if you want more knee room). Both are all cotton, generous stretch, look fine off the bike. Although I wouldnt do more than 20? miles in them. More for the biking and hopping about.

Sally: 🥰 Thank you! Platypus compatible - you’re so much fun! I looked at the pants. Love the style but with all the poly and nylon, I’m betting on PFAs. I don’t know how Riv’s pants got them out, but they say they did and it is what I want to believe! And MUSA is cheaper. Though, your pants will surely have a better style for women than the MUSA. But stay tuned.

P: I will take a pic and try to do it tastefully. I think we all want to know what the seat of those pants look like on a body, but even Will didn’t want to post that pic. He just shows the corner of the pant seat with the tag! I’ll try to finagle an appropriate shot and send it to you. Even if they look hideous I might do it anyway just to show you “this is what these pants look like on us.”

I did order them and hope to get them by end of this week. I’ll report back.

Meanwhile, anyone else have insight?
Leah

Hi Leah,

I have the MUSA pants and I love them! I wear them often and not just for riding. I'm 5'8" and 140 (ish) pounds and tried both medium and large and settled on large. While my ego did not like that, I have adjusted mentally. My PBH is 85 and I love the length. Plus, they narrow near the ankle so I don't need to roll up the pantleg (depending on the bike I'm riding that day).

I find them flattering, which is to say I feel good when I wear them. However, I prefer my pants on the looser end of the spectrum. I cannot stand anything form fitting. Thus, bike specific shorts, tights, etc. are and never will be an option for me. Ditto skinny jeans. These pants aren't baggy, though. They drape nicely. They also allow for an underlayer like thin tights or a liner, which helps extend the wearable temp range. Again, totally my opinion, and I have found that my opinion regarding attire and fashion is definitely in the minority.

Since this is a slightly new design, I did order a medium and a large to make sure I don't miss out. Mine shipped this morning to Colorado, so they will likely get here before Leah's get to her. If anyone is interested in my unfashion insights, I will follow up after try-on. I may even concede to a photo.

Happy to answer any specific questions!

The new MUSA pants are now/already backordered. :( If y’all could report to the group after you’ve given them a good test run, I’d love to hear your reports!

I have two generations of MUSA Pants (2013 and 2022), knickers (2015) and shorts (2022 and older) and I wear them a LOT, especially the pants.
2013: black pants size Large (I live close enough that I tried on different sizes)
2015: Knickers size medium
2022 Musa shorts Large
2022 Tan pants Large
I need to put new elastic into my older pair of pants.
There was a batch that came out in between my two pairs of pants that were just too short for my long legs.
I used to wear pants size 14; maybe my middle is bigger now.

I hope it doesn’t take Riv a long time for a re-stock in the medium size, Liz!

In a shocking turn of events, the train carrying my Riv pants derailed last night and I’m not sure I’ll get them before tomorrow’s trip! I’m meeting some of the RivSisters IRL this weekend (there will be a post later) and I would have loved to bring those pants, assuming they fit and all.

Sue - I’m glad you love your MUSA pants, this makes me believe they will work for me. I’ve never seen a woman wear or talk about them so thank you for responding!

What a great idea and fun way to begin the new bicycling year, Leah (and all your  RivSisters)! Safe travels, and take many pictures! Rather than ask the million questions I have about your gathering, I’m hoping your famous post-event updates will answer most of them for me. :)

Pants arrived Thursday evening. They fit similarly to the previous generation, whew. As noted, the waist is larger but easily adjusted. Both the medium and large fit me, but I'm keeping the large because I prefer the looser fit. The mediums are being gifted to my spouse, so, unfortunately for anyone hoping to snag a return, I'm not sending back. I'm eager to hear how everyone else likes them!

I should write too - I got my pants yesterday. Tracy is right, I should have sized up for a looser fit. The small is very form fitting on me. I def think they were meant to be men’s pants because they are so straight in the waist/hip and I had to coax those pants onto my frame, lol. But fit ok once you get them on. A medium would have totally cured that. But so will losing 5 pounds of winter weight, I think. Girls, if you need pics, I got pics. I’ll PM them to you. Not convinced these should be be out on the World Wide Web, lol.

I am a guy, but thought I’d chime in as I’ve had a pair since they first released them (with the button back pocket)

I love mine, they fit well and look nice in my opinion! My wife has worn mine around the house and likes them as well, however they are a size too big for her and therefore I don’t think that really means anything. I’ll add a photos of me wearing them.

Hi Leah,

I am also curious to see how you like them (or not…), but I’m here to say that I’ve enjoyed these pants from Woolly. They’re wool which is my favorite material by far.

Nick, thank you! Your pants look great! I love MN and Minnesotans (married one) and I love seeing a Surly. Did you get more than one pair?
