Framebuilder/YouTuber Daniel Yang just posted a video where he visits Maxway, the Taiwanese framebuilders that produce steel frames for many brands, including Rivendell:

Around 6 minutes in is footage of their brazing shop, where we get to see what are clearly Platypus frames being brazed and then going through final frame prep (seat tube slot cutting, reaming, BB thread chasing, etc.).

Thought it might be of interest to many here. Maybe one of those frames is your future bike!

Very cool, thank for sharing!  The Platy run does get quite a lot of screen time - I think the bikes in the shot directly before are Velo Orange Neutrinos?

WHAT A GREAT TOUR!
Thank you SO much for sharing!
It makes one realize the effort and the number of hands that touch these handmade frames!
Such a show of dedicated workers, as well!

Happy Trails,

Great stuff, thanks. Loved the Tom Ritchey bobbleheads.

Thanks so much for sharing.  That was fun.  Things I didn't expect:  Bottom bracket threads being cut after fabrication;  frame being aligned after welding.  Maybe it's "re-aligned?"  And yeah Tom Ritchey bobbleheads are a hoot.

Thanks Jeremy for sharing this!   I watched with interest, especially as a custodian of a Platypus with brazed  midstays.
I think the new lugged Platys look good, but there's something about that sleek brazed joint.

I spent a year of my life flying back and forth to Taichung 30 years ago - back when business class meant your seat had a footrest. I got to know all the good lunch spots. The Maxway factory is so much cleaner, brighter and better organized than any I visited. They have come a long way. One of the things that made an impression was seeing all the old machinery that had been discarded in the US and shipped there as scrap, only to be re-habbed, re-purposed and used again in some very inventive ways. Nothing is wasted there.

Hot take: a Taiwanese production frame is probably better made than a typical custom builder. They do much more volume, so more experience, and have much more tooling for shaping and fixturing the tubes.

I watched a video recently from bender cycles on YouTube as he was making a frame and he explained that you still want to check alignment after welding In case too much heat warped the parts being welded, same for facing and threading, its an interesting video

I understand that the BB threads being cut and the frame being aligned after welding is to account for heat-related distortion of the tubes from welding/brazing. Some manufacturers/builders claim that their particular sequence of welding/brazing reduces the chance and/or magnitude of these distortions but I don't know anyone claiming no distortion.
