Howdy folks.

Despite the whole front basket thing, AFAIK GP has never really been pro front loading.  It seems to me the long back end is perfect for a rear rack, assuming the stays and what-not are long enough.  What rear racks look good on these and fit well?

Thanks, Doug

What kind of bags are you thinking about using? Kind of determines which rack is best. I've had my Nitto Big Back rack on my Clem to carry panniers and it worked well. I'd say it's a touch flexier than the same rack on a shorter chain stay bike (like my Long Haul Trucker) because the upper stays are more extended to reach the upper mounts on the seat stays. Most of the long chain stay models have a second set of M6 eyelets mounted a few cm up from the dropouts which helps center the load within the wheelbase more.

Thanks Jeremy :^)

No particular goal, probably not looking for a rack that is optimized for big panniers though...

Both Tubus and Nitto offer long stays and adjustable rod clamps to make their racks very versatile.
Tubus Vega rack on my daughter's upright.

Not a particularly long wheelbase, but you can see how long and skewed weree the stays needed on this application.
The Touring Store is a good place to shop for Tubus.

Howdy folks,

Kinda bumping this and rephrasing the question a bit.  Are there any not-huge racks that mount up on the long chainstay RBW models without just using super long stays to the rack top(ie. sit closer to the seat tube and don't need the super long stays)?  Most pictures I see manage to work on the long chainstay bikes by using really long supports from the rack top to the seatstay mounts, which seems sub-optimal to me for at least a couple reasons (looks, flexibility).  I would think with the LONG rear end, heel clearance wouldn't be a big concern and a rack could sit further forward.  If such a rack doesn't exist, I wonder if there will be one at some point?

Thanks again,
Doug

Dajia Stainless (same one sold by VO, 'Expedition' maybe) on my 65cm Clem H using the upper M6 barrel bosses further up the stays above the dropouts.  I had to cut down the struts that were otherwise needed full length on my wife's x-small VO Camargue frame.  I use it for some small OYB panniers on occasion and works great.

In order of stability, to my thinking...

-marks rack attached to above brake mounts and mid seatstay mounts
-nitto saddlebag support attached to seatpost and mid seatstay mounts
-tumbleweed t rack
-tubus fly or airy
-nitto campee minus the removable low rider parts

There is also this rear nitto rack that uses the cantilever posts

I liked the Nitto R14 rack. Looks like Riv made their own version but it's sold out. I ziptied a sackville saddle bag for a bit to mine when I had it.

If your rear saddle bag isn't going to hold too much weight, then maybe try rigging up the "peck deck" ala Ultraromance. Here's a link to pics+text of Matt's (of Crust) Nor'easter with the peck deck.

I think different sizes of long-wheelbase Riv's have different rack mount positions. Some with mid-seat stay mounts might work well with R14, Mark's rack, etc.

Good luck!

Doug;  I tried using the large nitto big rack on my joe appaloosa and my clementine, but it felt like the stays were so long the rack was in another time zone. However, I think it was Joe Bernard who suggested trying the medium sized nitto big rack with the m6 eyelets.  The smaller rack seems to fit much better with the long chainstays.  I think it's about as good a fit as I could have hoped for.

cheers,
