I am putting together an Atlantis for touring/long rides/light trail use.

I am thinking of using a new Velo Orange fluted triple or perhaps picking up a used Shimano XTR M900.

Silver is a little too spendy for me, and I given that am built like a tank and ride accordingly, think the Clipper/New Albion triples might not be hardy enough.

I figured if anyone would have an informed opinion on this crucial matter, it would be this bunch. What would you do?

The Dimension Cross Crank qualify as tank like. It's gloss black , but a nice gloss. Also110/74 BCD. Made by Andel(model RSC6), the largest crank mfr in the world and producer of Riv cranks. The cartridge length for the triple could be anywhere from 113-118 depending on the stays and/or your ability to use a 1-2mm DS spacer if you only have say a 113mm BB on hand. I have a set of these on my Bombadil and the are notably stiffer than the Sugino XD variety it replaced.

"Silver is a little too spendy for me"

Silver arms only retail for $190.  What do you want to pay for Silvers?  I've got two sets of 173mm arms only that I could conceivably let go. If you want used Silvers for less than those $50 Dimensions that Garth was promoting, then I'd keep mine.  :).

I'm running vintage Ritchey's on my Gus and they work just fine. I just sold a vintage Deore triple on Ebay for $10.50 from a Covid build that I ended up not doing. They were absolutely perfect with just a little cosmetic wear. It's hard to beat a decent vintage square taper so long as the tapers are still in good shape. The only reason I'd probably buy a new crank for a Riv build is if I wanted crank arms shorter than 170mm.

Shimano m730 is about as good as it gets for my eyes.  Or mt-60.  Or Sugino AT, or VT, or the Ritchey ones...

I have Stronglight Impact crank arms in stock for $120 the pair, and cranksets for $190.

I agree with Cal…if you are not to fussy about blemishes, you can find a good used set.

I'm running a Sugino AT on my Clem, and building up my Atlantis with a mid-late 80s Specialized ST (Flag) crankset (also produced by Sugino). Got both of 'em on good ol' FeeBay and were around the $80-90 range for each.

Side Question- what BB length/spacer combo are you using on the Clem with the Sugino AT and are you getting a good chain line?

113mm spindle and running a 1x11 (42 ring up front [mounted on outer], 11-51 cassette). Chainline is off by a few mm (49 in front, 46 in back) IIRC

Spa Cycles in the UK sell badge-engineered cranks that are the same as the Sugino XD2 or Alpina2. The forgings are identical to the Sugino cranks, they just don't have the Sugino "S" symbol on the back of the crankarm around the pedal eye. Stronglight Impact cranks are the same forging. I've used all three (Sugino, Spa, Stronglight), and as far as I'm concerned they're functionally identical.

The Spa cranks are very reasonably priced at STG30 for a pair of crankarms without chainrings, and about 2½ to four times that price with chainrings, the pricing varies depending on what chainrings you get (TA rings being the most expensive).

Here's are some photos I took a while ago of SPA TD2 cranks compared with Sugino Alpina2:

If you're hard on cranks as I have been(cracked/broken 3 sets), I'd would really suggest getting a crank design that uses fluted arm construction as I find these notably stiffer than a traditional mold. Riv/Andel cranks appear machine fluted, and the Dimension/Andel mold fluted. That's why they weigh more, just more material in the design. Having used the cheaper Sugino XD2 and AT cranks(not their higher end versions), I have no love for them anymore now that I've experienced the stiffer design. The Dimension/Andel is available in silver btw, but directly from Andel in Taiwan. I can't recall exactly what they cost when I bought some, $80ish a pair pluse #30-40ish shipping. Additional pairs, likely up to 4 would fit in the box, are not additional in cost as it's an air shipment fixed fee. Otherwise I'd say save up for the Riv cranks, they're worth the investment.

Triples are coming back.

I have used 9 & 10 Speed chain & cranks with each other without issue.

I  have a 10 speed campy record triple 50-40-30 with phil wood bb.

I would send picts & make me an offer.

I have taken out a few crank arms in my time as well!

Thanks to list member Alex, there is a pair of nice old Deore arms heading my way, which will get some new rings for a 48-36-20something set up. Then, I'll set about the usual course of destruction and see how long they last.

+1 on Nick Payne said about the crank arms from Spa Cycles in the UK.  The have the XD-2 and the TD-2 crank arms for L30, which comes to about $40 after currency conversion, minus VAT and + shipping.

The TD-2 crank is a normal 5 arm without a hidden chainring bolt.  I bought the TD-2 arms =with the Spa 7075 rings in 2022 and have had no problems.   Currently using a Sugino AT triple for a low Q (152mm).

The TD-2 has a Q of 159mm with a SKF symmetric 113mm BB with a 2.5mm drive side spacer & 2mm clearance to the chain stay.
