After ogling Geoff's new Hunqapillar for a while, I went over to Rivbike to do some more ogling, and discovered an odd detail: The forks are threaded on top of the crown so you can mount a rear rack on the front. Um..why? Is there a benefit to doing this over mounting a nice front Nitto I'm not aware of?

I think the top o' the crown mounts are just another option on a bicycle that has just about the largest number of options...

There are a number of custom rack makers who use the crown top mount, in addition to the rear-to-front benefit.  For wider racks and bigger front loads, I would reckon that two points of anchor is better than one.

A non-riv bike in my house has these mounts. I will only mention that
fork vibrations can impact those bolts and work them loose over time.
So crank them down and/or locktite/beeswax them to keep them from
loosening up and allowing moisture intrusion it your fork crown.

otherwise they are conveniently located and make sense to me.

I have a repainted Atlantis in the mail right now, and I've had those holes added to the crown. I have some hopes for using the R14 on the front:

Thanks for the tightening tip, Seth.

Hi Joe,

I'm glad that my Hunqapillar inspired you to swing by Riv HQ for more in-depth ogling.  LOL

I agree with Jim- That Rivendell would provide those fork crown rack attachment points on the Hunq, speaks to the great versatility that Riv wants the Hunq to avail its owner.  Seems quite a few Riv bike owners like the option of being able to move their rear rack to the front on occasion...or they like the size and shape of a particular rear rack, to be used as a front rack(perhaps to fit a specific pack).  Having those fork crown mounts really opens up the possibilities.

How about using a Mark's rack with four point mounting? Should be
more stable than mounting to the center of the fork crown. I have
one of those "other bikes" also, and hacked a four point mount for a
cheap Nashbar rack that stiffened it up write a bit.

I believe these are fashioned after the porteur bikes, which used the
additional attach points of the fork crown (as opposed to a single
brake-bolt mount) to add strength and stability at the rack level for
the typically bigger and heavier loads carried on the wider porteur
racks.

I have them on my Bombadil, and I wish my Platrack attachment took
advantage of these.
