Hi all,

As part of my preparation for the really long rides, I decided to drop weight on my bike where I thought I could compromise.

Where did I lose substantial weight?

1. Plastic fenders to aluminum fenders (-300g)
2. Hetre EL 42 mm--> Ecureil 38 mm (-260g) (Only front is Ecureil for 300k)
3. Plastic saddle: Fizik Tempo Aliante R3 Adaptive (-200g) Really comfortable for a plastic saddle.  Does have a couple of points on sit bones that I'm not used to (narrower than my normal saddle), but will easily adapt (will not chafe).
4. Front bag--Berthoud bag with decaleur needs no stiffener inserts (-200g)

I also got some shiny (affordable, Chinese-made) titanium water bottle cages on ebay that work great and save me another 40g. All in all, I'm dropping over 2 lbs, which is pretty good.

My training is a little lean, as I didn't do any rides over 15 miles long over the last month between the 200k and 300k.  However, I do commute to work almost every day (5x/wk) and get about 1300 ft of daily climbing in.

The 300k is really beautiful and not that hilly (relatively speaking), which makes for a really nice ride. I've also done the ride many times, so I know what I need to do to finish it.

I finished at around 15 1/4 hours, which is great for me, given my lazy conditioning.

The much harder 400k and 600k are in the next two months.  I hope to have the fortitude to complete those rides. A pic from the start of the 300k is below with my latest setup.

Congratulations on completing the SFR 300k brevet, Toshi, and thanks for sharing your easy-to-achieve weight-saving measures; 2 lbs is substantial, given the ease (okay; leaving the costs aside for a moment). Looks like you are planning to do a full brevet series this year.

From the photo it look slike the Berthoud bag isn't even being support by the rack, only touching it a bit. Your next brevet may be even light if ditch it, unless it's needed for the fender. My Honjo front fender rattled quite a bit until I added a front stay, I think they are longer than others. I don't really ever use fenders though.

Thanks Tom,

I've done the SFR 400k before, but not the SFR 600k.  I know that's a tough one--I've completed some easier ones, so hopefully that experience will help me.

One other minor load lightening was 50g recovered by going from a Topeak Road Morph to a Topeak mini morph.  The mini morph performed great for two flats on my ride including my fat 42 mm tire and a high pressure road tire.  I love the flexible hose that connects to the valve so you are not putting pressure on the valve stem with every pumping motion.  I think Leyzyne has a similar system with a hose.

Thanks for the update. You and Bill are showing that it's not incompatible to ride a Riv and be a weight weenies. Approve!

Toshi always curious about your onigiri consumption on brevets!

I did a 600 in October and carried a 10 oz squeeze bottle of congee that I made in my Berthoud front pocket. I think I'll try that one again.

Hey Josh,

Congee in a bottle sounds like an amazing idea.  I scramble eggs and use some chicken apple sausage (for the 200k I used leftover fish cake I had) and mix with rice.  I usually add some extra saltiness/umami via soy sauce.  I place it on nori (sushi seaweed) and roll it like a california roll.  I slice in half and put it in a baggie for me to eat during the ride. This is a variation on Skratch labs: https://www.skratchlabs.com/blogs/recipes/dr-lims-bacon-and-egg-rice-cakes

Depending upon the temperature of the ride, I can carry around enough for 300k, but I haven't tried longer (since the meat is perishable).  Previously I switched over to date and nut bars kind of like Lara bars. I like figs more, so I am thinking about trying to make a fig and nut bar of similar consistency instead of dates. I'll try it for my next ride.

15-1/4 hours is a great time for an SFR 300.  Great work Toshi!

Toshi and I spoke briefly on last month's 200, and I did my third SFR 200 of the year on the same day Toshi did the 300.  I told him I was going to shoot for an R12 rather than do the longer rides this year, and Toshi very kindly remembered that I've got a redemption goal on the Marin Mountains 200 in the Spring, because I did it last year 10 minutes over the limit.  It was a cool but not cold day, and the winds were low and visibility was absolutely spectacular, so riders in a good mindset were rewarded all day long for riding in one of the most beautiful settings in the world.  One of those unbeatable views was on the hardest climb of the day up out of Stinson Beach over Mount Tam at mile 105.  Talk about earning your views!

Thanks Bill,

I'm rooting for you on the Marin Mountains 200k.  That ride is like a 300k with a 200k time limit! It will remain on my bucket list to try this someday, but I will need to do some serious training!
