Any spare/overstocked/nearly-dead 650B wheelsets out there?  Want to try a conversion on my 56cm Atlantis.

Looking to save a little more than the budget set of wheels Riv is currently offering as this is just an experiment.

Let's talk.  Thanks.

Will your brakes reach that much farther?

In a conversation with Grant a few years ago, I mentioned trying that with my 56 Atlantis. He very quickly and assertively said "don't do that".
Just sayin'...

I did this very conversion last season. At first I tried some old Shimano Altus cantis that just fit the larger diameter 650b wheels. Eventually I obtained some smooth arm Paul Moto BMX V brakes that work very well. The larger diameter wheels have raised the bottom bracket a bit but it is not noticeable because the Atlantis was quite low to begin with. The Hetres that I can now use on my 56 cm Atlantis are a joy.

Was considering this too, any pics of the setup?

What was his reason?

Is the 56 normally a 559-wheeled bike? If that is the case, I also
don't see the point unless you want to run narrower road tires and
maintain more or less the same wheel diameter.

I actually do want to run narrower (40-44) tires and have a more aesthetically pleasing wheel profile while doing so.  Can't get fenders to fit right, without a lot of extra fabrication and spacer work, with tires less than 50mm wide.

Looks sweet with the red Hetres, what size fenders are those? They look really close to the bridge on the top of those brakes so not sure if you could run anything bigger or something in metal that isnt as giving as the chromoplastic.

Yes, they are close to bridge and they droop forward some too probably due to the old daruma I'm playing with.  I found the daruma on an old set of fenders a friend used on PBP in 1991.  I will re-rivet the angle bracket back on soon.  I think they are P55 originally used with 26x1.5 and later with 559x47 Pasellas (that only inflated to 42 mm).  They fit the Hetres okay.

The conversion to 650b works fine for this 56cm Atlantis.  I now have a 58cm, 26 inch wheel LHT that is my touring bike now and I'm happy this frees up the Atlantis for Hetre play.

I will ride this next month  at Riv Rally East.

Thomas,

Beautiful set up, just oozes sweet comfort and ride-ability. Wouldn't it ride even better with its HEADBADGE?
(Something about that proud square-rigger leading the way that gets my mojo working!)

I have the headbadge. It fell off in Nova Scotia just has we began a two week tour. I have just not reattached it yet.

Beautiful. Looks darn near perfect!

I often wonder if Grant were to design the Atlantis now instead of
1998ish if he would use 650B over 26".

Yeah. I'd also point out that 650b conversions are usually done to
address shortcomings in a bike--limited fat tire/fender clearance and
a too high ("crit geometry") bottom bracket. The Atlantis is so super
and versatile as is, I don't think there's any need or reason to
convert it.
