I've had a set of the small, but very nicely made, Gilles Berthoud
GB799 panniers for several years and I've used them for some short
tours. Originally, I had them mounted on one of the Nitto Campee rear
racks that are made with detachable low-CG grates
(here: http://www.benscycle.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=874
).

The Berthoud GB799 panniers weren't well suited to the Campee rack,
which seemed outsized compared to the pannier bags. I've subsequently
sold my Campee rack.

Recently, pretty much by serendipity, I happened to find some on-line
photos that showed the Nitto R-15 rear rack on a couple of bikes.
That rack looked quite suitable for the GB799 panniers, so I ordered
the rack from Ben's Cycle. I mounted it on my Rivendell Road Standard
and I've been very pleased with the match to my Berthoud panniers!

The Nitto R-15 rack appears to have been purpose designed for the
Gilles Berthoud GB799 panniers - if it wasn't they certainly conform
to the rack quite perfectly.

Here's some photos of the rack and panniers on my bike:

Now I know why I shouldn't have sold my R15! That's a fantastic set-up Jim. I can imagine this with Rivs new low-rider rack and another pair of Berthoud's up front. I wonder how close the matching Sackville's will line up with the R15?

Marty, I'm with you on wondering how the new Riv low-rack will work
with various panniers. Euro-Asia Imports has a Gilles Berthoud
Diagonale bicycle shown with panniers that equip that bike, it's a
nice combination:

Jim:

Is the lower horizontal bar on the R-15 intended for pannier mounting?

An irritation that I have about the Nitto big back racks is the awkwardness of using the platform with panniers installed.  I've seen other mfgs racks with a second set of bars a couple of inches below the platform.  The second set allows unobstructed use of the platform with panniers installed.  IMHO the Nitto big back rack would be much improved by a second set of bars and eliminating the angle braces that seem to mostly get in the way of things.

Lower/second set of bars like the Tubus Cosmo – a great rack.  Only downside is that the platform needs to be narrower, making it somewhat less than ideal for trunk bags on the rear.  Really great for panniers + saddlebag, though.

Doug, I agree that a second set of bars beneath the platform would be
a good feature for many of the larger Nitto racks. I have a custom
rack that was made many years ago for my Schwinn Paramount by Jock
Fisher (RIP) who was a partner of Tim Isaac at that time. The rack
has the second set, and I've used it to mount the Berthoud GB799
panniers on some occasions. (here:

Nitto has a new rack coming out that has the lower bars for panniers. Haven't seen it on the streets yet but here is a picture from Interbike

Mike:

Thanks a million!  THAT is the rack I've been designing in my head off'n'on forever.  Simple, clean, with the 2nd set of pannier bars.  I just could never work out all the angles, etc., to hand off to a custom rack builder.  I'll be the first one on my block (it's a short block) to get one of these when they arrive.  I hope this is sufficiently exciting to get some shelf space at Riv.

Jim:

That is a gorgeous rack.  The second set of bars seems such a simple addition that greatly enhances the utility of the rack.  Being able to load the platform without disturbing the panniers would make simplify life on tour.  Just around town it's nice to just clip on a pannier as needed & not have to mess with a bag on the platform.

Just wanted to give post info that the standard Ortlieb rolltop bags mount to the lower bar of the r-15 rack without any issues.  The clips are adjustable and I was able to mount them after a few quick adjustments.

Beautiful rack! How do you like it compared to the R14 and the Nitto Big Rear?

So far I'm liking it (except for the brake issues I caused by mounting a strut in contact with the rear brake cable housing!)

The Big Rear is probably overkill for me, and looks that way aesthetically....whereas the r14 doesn't support panniers which is what I wanted.  I've got a large saddlesack for overnights/hauling...but wanted to be able to hang some panniers too if needed/easier (and already have a set).

I did discover while mounting this rack what one change between the bleriot protovelo I ride and the production model: the production model has brazed on seatstay mounts that are higher up than the protovelo.  My bike simply has mounts drilled into the seatstays, and too low to get a strut positioned without hitting the cable housing easily (using Silver long reach brakes).  Hope to figure that out at work today because my commute was full of rear brake rub.  Would like to switch to Paul Racer center-mount brakes at some point, but have to cut back on my bike spending...
