I can't add photos to a post. Keep getting the conversation too long error window.
What is the secret?
I have tried adding a link to a photo with the same result.

Richard, Since there are many variations of operating systems, devices and browsers/apps it would help if you state exactly what you're using to access the group. The device format, the OS, the browser or app. That way you can get a specific answer.

I have been using a Dell desktop running windows 10 an edge browser, also have a Macbook Pro running Monterey. Doesn't seem to matter what I use, if I put a photo in the post, I get the message too long error.
I can't find anything in my Google groups settings that will change things. Some posts have multiple photos in them.
Is there something in membership settings that would cause this problem?

If I'm not mistaken there is a size limit to how many mb's per posting. So if you try to post multiple or even single large photos over a certain amount, it might be 25mb ?, then you get that message. Just split the images into single or smaller individual posts. In the case of an overly large photo, you must downsize it first.

I tried that, resized to smallest size, converted to a link and still got the too large error. Some people can put multiple photos in their posts.
I can't add anything.

A couple of things to check that I have run into—

There are three dots at the bottom of both your second post and Garth’s post in this thread.
When you click on that, it expands and shows the post that you are “replying” to, even if you clicked “Reply all”.
All that is also included in your post.

So maybe you are “replying” to a post that is replying to a post…that each already have photos attached…and so, your message is too long even if it is only a couple of words.  All that other stuff goes along, and gets credited to your post.

Easiest way out of that is to put a couple of words or a sentence in your post window, and check for the three dots in your post window, and click them to expand, and then delete everything below your couple of words.  That should give you a clean post to work with.

Another thing I’ve found is that you can attach photos with the paperclip, and that seems to sometimes work better for me on larger photos than the in-line insertions.

Echoing aeroperf's suggestion to use the paperclip to attach photos. I've had issues posting photos using the Mail app on Mac and iPhone, but logging in to Google Groups with a browser allowed me to include photos, as aeroperf suggested.

Tried to attach photo to a new post. Just title, two words and the photo. No luck. Message too long.
Same result with the Dell desktop or the Macbook Pro.
I have looked at all my Google Group settings. Can't find anything amiss. What am I missing?

Did you use the "paperclip" button to attach the photo instead of embedding it into the body of the email?

How big are your photo files? You can use Mac's Preview application to reduce the size (by %: 75%, 50%, and so on); you don't need 4 gb for a clear photo.

And O, People: Please don't embed huge photo files into the body of your emails! Use the paperclip! It's easy and prevents your message and every other message of the thread from disappearing into the invisible edges unless you view at 33%. I have a 42" gaming monitor (for work, not games) and these embedded files still extend out sideways until only 1/2 of the message is view-able without manually moving the window laterally.

I used the paper clip, reduced the photo to smallest size. Even tried attaching a link to photo. No go.

Richard, specifically in megabytes, what is the size of the image you are trying to post ?   The size limit for a post is possibly 8mb, not the 25mb which I think is for gee-mail attachments.

You have not mentioned removing the string of replies below the three dots, have you done that also ?

For that matter, by all means try another web browser. Also, try sending the message to the group email address via gmail. I don't post from gmail myself, but many do and if you don't know how just ask here and someone can help you do that.

As a test I emailed a photograph from my phone to my gmail.  That photo is of a cocktail I enjoyed this weekend in New Orleans.  Clicking on the Properties of the Photo, it's just under 2MB.

I click the paper clip to add it.  I choose the "Browse" button and select my photo from the Downloads folder on my computer.  It seems to attach fine and perhaps you can see it.  The cocktail, which might be sideways, is called "Leisure Time".

My PC is a Raspberry Pi 400, Linux OS, Chromium Browser.

Richard,
When you say you selected the smallest size, are you referring to the words that show up around the frame of the photo when you add it to your message? If so, that doesn't actually shrink the size of the image file; it only reduces the display size of the image. If I'm misunderstanding, you can ignore the info below. Otherwise, try resizing the files using Windows before you add them to your post.

1. On your Dell, try opening the photo in the Windows Photos app. In the upper right, click the three dots menu. If you select File Information, it will show you the dimentions and file size in MB on the left. You can see my photo below is 12.2MB, which would not work with Google Groups file size limit:
windows-photos.jpg
2. Select Resize from the three dots menu shown in the image above. You'll get the Resize window shown below:
windows-photos-resize.jpg
3. Select M (medium) unless there is some small detail in the photo that you really want to preserve (like lug lining) - then select L (large). Both sized will look nice on a screen.
4. On my computer, a Save File dialog opens up. Just save the file somewhere and add -small to the end of the file name so you know that it's the smaller one.
save-dialog.jpg
5. If you go to the File>Propoerties of the new resized image, you'll see that the file size is drastically reduced:
File-props.jpg
6. But it still shows up really nicely in the message
