I had a set of more or less NOS SunTour XC Pro cantis (the last version, champagne colored ones) to build my wife's new bike up with, but one of the right (the side with the cable clamp) caliper is bad and doesn't allow the caliper to freely move on the boss.  Through swapping parts around, I have narrowed it down to the caliper itself.

Is there ANY chance that any of you out there have (ideally) just a caliper, or even a set in decent condition that I could buy in order to get my wife's new bike on the road?

I'm also looking for a Nitto or Specialized Dirt-Drop stem (or similar combination of extension/rise in 1"), 100mm, silver, with a 25.4 clamp.  I have a black (really more of a gunmetal color) Nitto in good condition in the same dimension that I can trade.

Thanks,

Pete

Well, that's no fun when the caliper doesn't fit correctly.  I use a set of those exact(champagne) brakes on one of my bikes. I do also have a NOS set(minus one original straddle cable) that I'll likely never use if you wish to buy them. I had saved them for future bikes ... but now that I'm using Riv frames with wider stays I find other brakes are better suited.  Too bad though , as I really like the set I have as they are work well and are so easy to adjust!

I would ask $55 shipped via USPS(assuming you're in the USA) and w/Paypal if you'd like them.  Otherwise I see there is some XC Pro cantilever parts on ebay right now.  Whatever works best for you is good with me.

Pete,
Not directly answering your question, but a couple of mechanic's troubleshooting tips.  Are you you 100% positive that it is the caliper itself?  Sometimes the ends of the canti bosses get a little bit of flare, and a high quality (one with tight tolerances, little play) caliper will bind.  If this is the case, some plumber's tape and patience can solve the problem.  Another common problem is that the sleeve in the caliper is a little too long for the boss.  The boss needs to extend ever so slightly past the end of the caliper sleeve.  This can be remedied by some very careful filing of the front of the sleeve. If the inner diameter of the caliper sleeve appears to be the problem, rolling some emory cloth to approximately the diameter of the boss and rotating the caliper on it will allow you to judiciously remove some material from the I.D.

Again, sorry if you've checked all of this, and simply have a defective product.
