Not only is it April - it's April Fool's Day, so perhaps it is fitting that I kick off this month's photo thread.  Whatever...here's a few from western North Carolina:

I had off from work today! And it’s great weather for riding. Here’s the Atlantis before changing things up on it (Silver OM-1’s came in the other day, just waiting on the 165mm crankset). It’s a Good Friday!

Got out for a good ride in the woods with some friends yesterday aboard the Bombadil. We hiked up to some old growth but left the bikes behind for that portion

Those are some sweet trails in the forest.  Question (for anyone), if you were to ride from your house to the best trails in your area, how many KM/Miles of trails like this do you have, that are continuous or have short, paved/gravel road connections?  I can stitch about 10-15km together, making for a roughly 30km loop (with lots of short paved bits).  If I had endless km's of such trails, I would be in heaven.

My photo isn't capturing the vibe of my ride yesterday, I simply stopped at my 1/2 way point and snapped the photo to show my new 105 brifters and Ergon BT Gravel bar tape.  I was having issues with my hands as of late (using DT shifters and Tektro brake levers, which in many ways I absolutely love) so I wanted a larger lever/brifter for my hands and some more padded tape so when my wrist is sometimes resting on the ramp of the bar, it was better cushioned.  4 rides - 0 pain :-)

Ah, spring in Pasadena. Much as I love riding in Wisconsin, this time of year I get tired of every ride being a "Spring Classic". I'll be here in LA for 4 weeks helping with the arrival of grandchild number 4. I drove here, so brought the UrHeron to meet the designer of its graphics, the incomparable Chuck Schmidt.

Hey Keith et al.,
Thanks! Glad you like the bike. It's my big Appaloosa. I did a really fun tour all around the San Luis Obispo area, where I met two Los Angeles friends.
Rode to Salinas. Caught the Coast Starlight train down to SLO. Once there, rode to Morro Bay State Park and camped one night. Then the next day ate some oysters (turns out I'm really bad at shucking oysters!). Rode about 10 miles to Montana de Oro SP where we camped (as shown in the picture). The next day we rode up to San Simeon SP which was our longest day. Camped there. Then rode back down to Morro Bay SP for another night. The next morning one of my friends and I took our bikes out on some dirt trails for an hour or so which was super fun. Finally, we rode to Avila Beach where we camped two nights near Port San Luis where I got a little better at shucking but not too great!

Bike set-up worked great! Had a small fab's chest in the front for tent, sleeping bag and tarp. Big rivendell bag on the bag with clothes, tent poles and other random stuff. Bike felt stable and easy to handle

Great trip! We never strayed too far in any direction but definitely felt like we covered some ground and got different views!

Lovely bike and lovely background; I do really think that, taking all in all, SoCal in its natural state, especially near the mountains and near the ocean, might just be one of the very few most beautiful places on earth. I recall Spring rides in West LA while visiting my brother who lived in West LA, very near Venice and Santa Monica, in those days, and the heart-rending natural beauty that managed to survive in the midst of the developments and boulevards and strip malls. I lived in Pasadena for a year, Hill Street just below the smog-beclouded freeway, but I saw enough of the other parts to remember its beauty.

Patrick Moore, in ABQ, NM where the austere high desert landscape has its own beauty, augmented by the cottonwood bosque running along the Rio Grand through the middle of the city. Come to think of it, I recall reading not too long ago an encomium or panegyric by a desert Bedouin on the beauty of the Sahara desert.

This morning was a tale of two feelings.  First was elated--to have the Roadini on the trails for the first time this year--42mm Hurricane Ridge, running TPU, pumped to 28ish PSI, so plush.  I switched from downtube shifters to brifters, new bar tape, and it was really comfortable.  I miss the ease of friction though, having to stop a couple of times to turn the RD barrel adjuster a 1/2 turn to get the kinks worked out of the new housing.  It's amazing to me that this bike, with 42mm tires is just as comfortable as my Salsa Fargo with 2.2" tires on these trails.  The bikes are just so different, but I'm still surprised at how comfy the Roadini is on these trails.  The other feeling, was cold.  Was -8C this morning.  By mid-day it was 5C, but I was working, so mornings it is!

Winter returned today (1hr north of Toronto).  It was around 3C most of the ride, finished at 6C though the wind picked up.  I have a route in the form of a long oval shape, heading WNW, and returning SES.  I rode out into a cool head wind, finding every 'cut' and sheltered road I can, as I make my way gradually up hill.  Lots of opportunity for play on some paved paths, gravel and dirt trails, and even a small single track 'cut' in a neighbouring town.  Despite riding this general route at least 50 times, I managed to find a new trail today as I explored an older subdivision that I had not ventured into previously.  Thank goodness for all-road style bikes: perfect for getting into the drops while facing a headwind, on and off curbs, finding flow on gravel/dirt trails, and comfortably rolling over the odd root and rock.  IMO these are the best rides, where you can make last minute route decisions and have an overall sense of exploration.

I love seeing your Appaloosa loaded up like this in ‘road touring’ mode. It’s a nice difference from the off-road focused Appaloosas like my own.
I bet I’d set mine up very similarly if I did a long tour with mine someday - like, say, Japan … *dreams wistfully*

Meanwhile, my last ride for this LA visit, San Gabriel Valley to Glendora Mt Road. It's so much nicer climbing mountains in cool temps.

Yes, my pump is askew. Just noticed that. Glad it didn't fall out at 60kph on the descent.

Step X: Bring my Appaloosa for a tour!

The peach blossoms look lovely. I love that you made the journey up to see them.
I feel lucky we caught the last couple of days of cherry blossoms in Tokyo.
(Warning - non-Riv content - though I do recall the review of the Brompton in a Riv Reader so I’m hoping it’s still allowed! Also this bike is gonna take me to Blue Lug to get some Riv merch!)

Great question! Reach is longer, wheelbase is shorter, standover height is lower, and the wheel size being 700c versus 650b is preferred for me. I'd be lying if I said that rarity of these frames, logo/headbadge, and color all didn't play a factor as well. Every Riv frame I've owned has had magic in it in one way or another, but the Hunqapillar has the most things going for it that I'm looking for with my riding, and my own bodily proportions.
