Now that we have our baby riding with us, my partner and I are looking for a bike rack for the car so we can escape the city and meander.

We drive a Ford Escape and borrowed something that mounted to the rear hatch for our honeymoon and that worked well. We probably don't want a hitch or roof rack. Thanks in advance.

We've used one of these for 15 years with no complaints.
It has worked on a VW Golf, Ford Escape, and Subaru Crosstrek.
5 minutes to put on, 3 minutes to take off (if you want to store it in the car while you ride).

That's a great design.  Thanks for the pro tip.

This is the rack that's on the police cars here. They look really nice for a trunk rack and come up frequently on Craigslist for about $40.

Congratulations on the baby.

I would really recommend reconsidering a hitch rack. Easier to install, secure, no paint rub/marks on the car, and they perform so much better.
One big issue you may run into is locking your bike. With a hitch rack, it’s easy to do. My rack came with integrated locks. Others, just cable lock to the hitch.
Also, if you have a step through bike (now or in the future), you’ll need a tray style rack.
