What color frame would go well with orange bar tape?

After deciding that I do after all like Molteni Orange as a frame color, I jumped on a list offer for a NIP lot of orange bar tape, which leaves me wondering just what I will do with it.

I might install it on the (eventual) orange Libertas, but that might be too much of an orange thing, right? What do y'all think?

Or I might install it on the Ford Blue 1999 Joe Starck gofast; see bike with very-nicely matching blue tape, below -- this blue Lizard Skins is getting work to point of replacement.

I don't think -- correct me? -- that Orange would go well with sage green ...? Also shown below.

I don't have to put it on something right away; just curious, since several bikes are coming up for various reasons for retaping.

Thanks.

I think it would look sweet on that green bike! I'd go with that one. Blue one would work too -- it would look like New York Knicks.

Jason: Which green, the BRG or the sage green?

Thanks.

The complimentary colors rule is that those sitting opposite on the color wheel are "best", that's why sports teams go with the rule. As Jason said, Knicks blue and orange or Laker purple and yellow, classic compliments. But compliments mean that colors look more like themselves, maybe even too much. So, with that in mind, my vote is the green and orange. Yellow would be nice on the blue...  but harlequin everything and it's that much better.

Sorry, no black or grey frame, alas.

This is interesting; thanks!

I hate taping bars, so probably no harlequinade, though.

Several people have suggested putting the orange tape on a green bike. But which green one, BRG or Sage Green?

I lean toward the BRG bike if only because I primly match my bar tape to my red Ortiliebs on the Sage one.

More comments?

Thanks.

I'll add to the orange-blue-yea.  Molteni orange tape and a royal blue frame .   This photo to illustrate the complimentary nature of the two. Of course royal blue is a general term and there are lots of shades of medium blues like that. Regardless, they are quite complimentary.  Picture a royal blue frame with Molteni Orange "Mathews" panels.

Patrick,

You can play around with shellacking bits of the tape to see what variations on the orange you might get before wrapping the bars.

Patrick,

It seems like you like the themes--the blue monochrome is so classy and unusual in the perfect color matching.  I love the look, even though you say the tape needs to be changed soon.

The Sage Green with red tape and matched Ortiebs must look awesome together.  I like the color scheme without the Ortiebs, too.

That leaves the dark green bike, a more serious look.  A pop of color would make anyone smile.  Is that an orange light or bell I spy on your handlebars?  Perhaps you were subconsciously noting orange would be a nice compliment.

I like Garth's idea of seeing the different shades of orange prior to the taping.

It would look lovely with either, but my vote would be for the orange on the sage green.  I'm in the process of setting up the exact opposite color scheme on my newly orange Appaloosa.  I've picked up lime green bar tape and am playing around with colored shellac to get the right sage-ish color.  Sage and orange is surprisingly beautiful together.

At the moment, I have a blue saddle bag and net on my orange bike and it is really nice together.  My Appa was dark green originally and I tried orange tape with it.  It was okay, but I like the lighter green and orange much better.

Patrick,
I actually think orange looks great with green.
I’m waiting for a frame to get repainted an olive/sage green and orange is my top choice for tape.
Here’s a pic of Gabby to give you an idea.

And the winner is --- Roberta.

I like the all-blue scheme on the gofast too much to change it, so the replacement tape will be as close to the Lizard Skins as I can find. The red tape with sage green on the errand bike is also a favorite, so that will stay.

The BRG dirt road bike is the one left over, and besides will soon have a bar transplant and require re-taping; voila, a concatenation of circumstances that practically legislate the choice.

Thanks, all, for helping me think this through.

Roberta, the orange device on the bar is my K-Light; my Spurcycle bell is black.

That actually looks very nice, and were I not so fond of the blue-on-blue of the 1999, I'd try orange on that bike.

Like several others, I think Orange bar tape on a blue bike is a great combo.
But if it was me, I'd do a harlequin wrap because that's how I roll (heh heh).
I'd do the main color of the bars in blue as well, with the highlighting color orange. My experience with harlequin wrapping is the highlight color only uses one roll for both sides because I only do the harlequin part on the flat sections of the bars. YMMV.

I will do that. BTW, until you pointed it out, I didn't even know that the color of the headlamp was orange; I thought it was gold -- somewhat color blind (which raises -- doesn't "beg") the question, why am I so exercised about orange tape? Answer: the orange of the tape is a much more obvious orange, at least to me.

BRG and Molteni Orange has got to be a winning combination. Photos once I receive and install the new bar.

Next: Need to find an orange Spurcycle bell to replace the black one.

Spurcycle only makes raw and black as you probably already know. However they have done 5 (that I know of) limited run collaborations with Chris King, matching the clapper on the black bell to a King Anodized color. First was blue, then red, then the CK Anniversary Olive Crate Green (those were raw bells and they only did 200), then last year purple AND bourbon.
So an eventual run of black bells with orange clappers is not beyond the realm of possible.

That orange won’t really go with anything. Midnight blue maybe, as long as you have something equally bright anywhere else on the bike.
To my eye, the strong red tape kills the subtle beauty of the sage green paint. British Racing Green could hold up to that orange, but I’d get a similarly bright seat bag or water bottles to tie it all together.

Agree that other orange accents would make the BRG to orange contrast less jarring. The blue Riv will get new blue bar tape, and I personally like the sage green and bright red contrast.

It looks like Revelate's Spinelock and Terrapin replace the Viscacha, and at least some of these come in a color called "Crush' for which no image is provided but "Crush" makes me think of "Orange Crush, and the black 8 l Terrapin at least does have bright orange accents.

Or perhaps orange bottle cages ...
