I'm considering getting a Marks' Rack to use as a saddlebag support, or as a place strap down a sleeping bag or stuff sack on an upcoming build. But haven't seen many pictures of it mounted that way. Please post pictures if you have them.

I'm particularly interested in how it fits on the back of smaller frames. If it sits too high above the wheel, I'll pass. I have a Carradice Bagman Sport, and it's great, but I am looking for something a little sturdier. At the same time, not interested in a rack that attaches to the rear dropout eyelets. The Marks' Rack's front-back versatility is the appeal.

this is the only picture i have of my hillborne which used marks rack for both front and rear. the good thing about it is that you can adjust it to sit however high above the wheel you want.

Philip, Shoji, thank you very much. Looks like Mark's Rack is just the ticket.

The weight limit on the Mark's rack is only 4.4 lbs.  I don't believe it's that fragile---in fact I hope it's not since I have one on the front of a Sam---but not having any other information I don't know what the weight limit really is.  The Carradice Bagman weight limit is 22 lbs.  If you're looking for sturdiness I'm not sure that trading a Bagman for a Mark's rack would take you in that direction.

Yes, I'm familiar with the published weight limits. I wouldn't put 20 pounds on either, but if I had to, I'd go with the Nitto's four struts and triangulation, instead of the bagmans single bolt clamp to the saddle rails.

My experience with the Nitto mini and similar is that the Nitto rating is conservative. My guess is that the bagman's higher rating is because it's intended to help bear the weight of a saddle bag that is also being hung from the saddle loops.

I believe the 4.4 weight limit was created for its intended use on the front with two long struts and the diving board. I had a Mark's Rack set up this way on a Romulus and it was apparent the diving board wasn't built for heavy loads. I think your plan with two pairs of struts raises the weight capability significantly.

Glad the marks rack is going to work, and it is definitely classy looking. I WAS going suggest something new i saw on the caradice site quite recently, but it appears to be discontinued already. It was a version of the bagman support with extra support struts. Still, if the marks rack doesn't work, maybe you could rig up something like this to use with your current rack. Found some pics here: http://www.wiggle.com/carradice-bagman-2-expedition-support-bag-mount-qr/

Wouldn't work for people who tinker with saddle height frequently, so maybe that's what led to the limited product life

I've cut off the tombstone. Just my personal preference.
I tend to bring too much stuff when riding, so this rack often supports heavy bag. There have been no problem so far.

Good luck!

also kind of bummed that they decided to change the front tab. the original front tab allowed either the B&M toplight to be mounted or a front dyno light to be mounted via light mount. You can see in my pic I had the Eyc on the front, and a toplight plus on the rear rack. They changed it due to the possibility of the front tab biting into the tire and all that. So now the new ones are replaced with a light mount on the side. Great for front light mounting, but not so much for rear light mounting.

The Nitto weight recommendations are absurd. I've sat on a Mark's rack and I weight 200 pounds. Obviously I wouldn't want to ride this way, but the rack will definitely not be harmed by a camping load.

I've had a few conversations with GP about the Nitto weight specs.  They are, in a word, extremely conservative (yeah..two words). If you see 4 pounds, then imagine that set on the rack in the worst possible way and torqued in the most aggressive manner possible.  For most folks and uses, you aren't likely to have the rack fail first.

I've used the Mark's as a rear bag support, and as a free-standing rack.  Stellar.

You can see the setup here in the second image (also in the third image, with a weather cover on the bag) -

Worked quite well on a long ago bike I had. Used an Acorn Rando bag - it was a good match.

A photo of a Mark's rack on my Rawland had been posted earlier (courtesy of Shoji); here's another photo showing the Mark's Rack on the rear of my Raleigh, all P-clamped up, supporting a Carradice Barley:

After reading this thread I was curious to try Mark's rack in the back.

Here are some pictures of my trial run (I know this style of 3-point mounting is not secure enough).  There's also a picture to show the capacity of Wald's medium rack.

I've used the same rack/basket combo in the front for couple of weeks.  Except for the small inconvenience of inadvertently kicking the basket while getting off the bike, weight in the back seems more stable.

So why so many people use a rack in the front and none in the back?  Is it for the reason the cargo is always in sight? (i.e., you don't need to wonder if anything is about to fall off)

Milk crates are popular in Boston area, and I see some Brooklyn Bikes crates, too.

I'll mount a rear basket for carrying certain goods, but I prefer having a saddlesack.
