Hi -

This post is probably rather late to be effective in the near term - but hopefully will eventually help achieve our final objective.

Last spring, my daughter graduated from high school and was admitted to Barnard College. Barnard is a small liberal arts college affiliated with Columbia University. Naturally, she would like to make use of a bike to get around New York City. Given that every bike in NYC parked outside for any measurable period is stolen sooner or later, we are loathe to ship her nice bike to NYC - just to have it disappear. The disappearance is all the more likely given my daughter's habit of parking the bike outdoors in the weather much of the time.

Hence we would like to find a beater. I take it Craigslist is the usual place one finds these kinds of things. Are there any other places in NYC (or nearby) we might also find such a beater? Extra points if the beater has Rivish accoutrements such as fenders and fattish tires. She would probably be happier with something other than a fixie.

As a side note, given that this is move-in weekend and we are in NYC - does anyone have a good recommendation for a tandem rental in Manhattan?

Thanks in advance,

Corwin

Seven Sisters, Kudos!  Maybe go for a small folder that she could take inside with her? worked for my wife when she would commute to work, plus it had the rivish qualities of fenders, a nice brass bell, some pleather grips and a kickstand. They go from normal folder to micro, depending on the size that she feels comfortable on. I used a old peugot U folder bike before they were cool and no one wanted the damned thing, got it like new for 10 bucks, sold it on to some hipster a while later for alot alot more than that. they are fun and you can bring them everywhere and are a fun conversation starter to boot!

I doubt any bike shops in the city have tandem rentals anymore, they take up to much floor space. The really good buys on used bikes are north of manhattan in westchester county. Try Craigslist in westchester. Its a 15 drive w. no traffic from northern NYC on the Henry Hudson parkway. Also try Cross county cycles in Yonkers on McClean ave he might have some older steel bikes from the 70's 80's.

I recommend doing what I did. I live in NYC, own a Riv, but needed a
beater for knocking around the city.

I'd check in with an outfit called Recycle-A-Bicycle. They do the
good work of accepting donated bikes and training youngsters to fix
them, then selling them reasonably to the public. That's where I got
my beater Univega road bike, going strong after 5 years, not even a
flat. They even overhaul bearings before sale, which adds a lot of
value. I think I paid around $250.

They're on Ave. C. near 5th St.; also an outlet in Brooklyn but I
forget where. Near the bridges.

Yes, give Hudson Urban Bicycles a try at least for rental. I biked passing the shop on Friday and was reminded of this post. I really should've thought of this earlier.

I wouldn't buy a bike in NYC.  Too expensive.  Buy it somewhere else.  And definitely invest in a good lock and make sure she knows how to use it.
