Hi ABQ Area Riv Owners,

Inspired by the Dallas TX group, I would like to invite any Riv owners in the ABQ area (maybe even Santa Fe?) to participate in a group ride on a yet to be determined date. Why do this? To get to see and maybe ride some other Rivs, to get to meet some other bike lovers that aren't interested in following all the latest biking trends, to learn about new bike routes, etc.
Patrick Moore has already told me he'd be glad to participate.
Let me know if you are interested in participating or if you have any questions or suggestions.

thanks!

17 years ago last March, March 2008,  we had Albuquerque’s first and only iBob ride and collected riders from as far north as Los Alamos as well as several from here in town. But while there’s overlap between the iBob list and the RBW list I don’t think a great deal of it happens in ABQ.

At any rate, I just had a good 2-person ride this morning and would enjoy a 2-person Official Albuquerque Rivendell Ride, if we stop at Flying Star at or near the end of the ride. (I started without breakfast this morning and brought no food so this morning did not complete the final 8 mile RT to/from the starting point but bailed at 26 miles 1 mile from my house. A Flying Star stop would have made those remaining 8 miles a doddle.)

I will ride my all-time fave, the ’99 Joe fixed, with or without a 2-speed IGH rear wheel.

We'll see what if any response I get, but as of now we should have at least 3 because my wife is now a Riv rider, too. She's concerned about keeping up but I told her this needn't be a particularly long or fast ride. I've done a couple of 20-25 mile rides with her and those went well, so she'll be fine.
BTW, I bet I already asked, but have you tried Bike In Coffee? I've been there twice now and really like it. They've got a pretty decent selection of food and it's such a nice place to hang out. I think both times we went it was Sunday morning and there was a jazz band playing some mellow stuff.

Three will be a fine group.

Do you want me to advertise on the Boblist? Probably few Rivendell riders who are not on the RBW list, but we may get a few sympathetic souls; there is even more ideological overlap between the lists than membership overlap, and both groups started with Grant.

Bikes and Coffee: no, I’ve not been there, but I would be delighted to try it out.

Let’s wait for a couple of days to see if others respond. IME, many RBW list members don’t read the list every day.

I had a nice fixed gear 27 mile rolling hills ride this morning with a friend (on a Black Mountain Monster Cross 2X11) and I am surprised at how good I feel afterward. I would have gone a full 35 miles but I didn’t eat breakfast and didn’t bring a snack, so bailed as my blood sugar bottomed out.

Please do give the boblist a try. I'm glad to hear you are getting some nice rides in. This is one of my least favorite times of the year due to the heat, but so long as I can get out early, it works. and I have had some really nice rides this summer.

We are going to Costa Rica July 19-27, so probably sometime after that. And then I have trip to Utah August 5-10, and a camping trip to Colorado Aug 17-21. Somehow everything got bunched later in the Summer.

Let me know how the boblist goes. So far no replies from RBW, but the posting has barely been up.

If I weren't recovering from a long hospital stay and some pesky kidney failure, I'd be in. Keep me in the loop for some fall rides when I'll (hopefully) be back in the saddle.

Hi Aaron,

great to hear from you and I'm sorry to hear about your current health issues. I'll add you to my list of Riv riders (not a very long list, currently) and will check in with you about fall rides
In the meantime, I hope you feel better soon and can get back on the bike!
BTW, what model bike do you ride? I have seen a few Riv riders around town so maybe I've seen you at some point.

Regards,

Chris Young

Last year I built up a green Susie and, when the 64 cm Homer frames went on sale, I made the financially questionable decision of building that up, too.

I love both. Ride the Homer more frequently. It's great around town. Currently, it's got Noodles on it, but I might buy some Loscos and a ridiculously long stem to make it more upright for my recovery.

What do you all ride?

I’ll make a preliminary general inquiry on the boblist.

Should be limit the ride to Rivendell models or can anyone ride anything, or something in between?

I don't think it has to be Rivs, but I would like to limit it to similar sorts of bikes. Maybe a steel frame is the common denominator? I'd love it if someone showed up on a vintage steel frame bike from just about any era. it'd be fun to see those bikes. Conversely, I'd be disappointed if we had folks with carbon frames, electronic shifting, etc. I'm thinking that no one would bother with all the new gadgetry on a steel frame bike, but that's just a guess.

Hi Aaron,

I'd love to see and maybe even ride that Susie! That seems like a really cool bike.

I'm a relatively new Riv rider, having just bought a 61.5 blue Homer back in November, but I love it and have ridden it quite a bit. I usually get in a 30-50 mile ride on the weekend and some shorter stuff during the week. Prior to buying the Homer, I was riding an ~2008 Lemond Versailles, a carbon frame (mostly) bike with super skinny tires. I liked that well enough (I still have it and ride it), but could feel that it was going to become more and more problematic as I get older (I'm 63 now). BTW, I have albatross bars on my Homer, and love them.
Because I liked the Homer so much, I got my wife a 60.5 sergio green Platypus earlier this year. That's a great bike, too, and it's a big enough frame that I can ride it, so that's 2 Riv models I have tried. But I sure would like to try others.

I do have one other bike. My 1987 yellow Cannondale MTB that I bought new. It's pretty scraped up now and so has become my cruiser bike for short errands. And that's the bike that I commuted to work at Sandia Labs for 30 years on! Earlier this year I added a Nitto Dirtdrop stem to that and some bosco bars to make the riding position more upright and relaxed, and I'm happy with the result, though it does look like a franken-bike now.

My wife and I are both abq riders. We have Bridgestones but not any rivs and lack orthodoxy in our allegiance.
I love metal bikes and rim brakes and would be happy to join if the timing works.

Hi all,

I live in Santa Fe and have a Platypus! I would be interested in carpooling down from Santa Fe if anyone else comes down from here? We don’t have a car rack…

I don’t have much experience with group rides, except for casual ones with my friends and not fast - so sometimes I just don’t know what to expect from something like this. But I’d love to meet you all explore!

Count me in.  I met Patrick several weeks ago down in the bosque and then had some personal issues arise that put a crimp in my riding but things are pretty much back to normal now.

Great idea. My wife and I would be happy to join if the categorization is generous enough and the timing is right.
We both have Bridgestone mb commuters and she has a mb3 turned gravel bike. I have metal bikes with friction bar end shifters but no riv or Bridgestone fit for such a ride.

I don’t think he’ll mind me sharing this. He wants to participate in the 2025 ride.

That March 16 2008 ride was exceptionally windy and dusty even for Albuquerque’s strong spring winds. We had Corrola-sized tumbleweed aggregations barreling towards us at 30 mph as we rode South. In fact, one participant bailed shortly after we got to the main No/So RG trail because it was so windy.

I think I had to fix 2 flats during our 30 or so mile ride; this back in pre-sealant days. And I am surprised to see how low my bar was back when I was a spritely, lissome 53-year-old. IIRC, bar was ~6 cm below saddle; about 2012 I adjusted all my road bikes to ~3 cm below saddle but with longer reach bars.

I think that RBW listmember Eric Norris still has that Motobecane that I sold to him what, 10 years ago? I put many miles on it before converting the 2003 Riv Road custom gofast into a fixed gear commuter, itself replaced in 2020 by Chauncey’s fixed/IGH clone.

We had a group post-ride recovery meal at Taj Mahal that, in those days, was at our Corrales shopping center starting point. I do think that a post-ride group meal is very much called for for our 2025 ride.

PS: It will be much, much greener, with far, far less wind and dust, and probably much hotter too on this 2015 ride, whether we ride the same Paseo del Bosque path or some other route.

That looks like a memorable ride! it seems like the rides where it's a bit of a struggle (or maybe a lot of a struggle) are the ones that stay with you.
I'm thinking of how to be inclusive of people that are up for riding something like 30 miles and some that might not be able to do that. My current idea is that we'd meet somewhere (maybe Bike in Coffee, if you like the setup there), do some introductions and bike ogling, and then maybe divide into a shorter ride group and a longer ride group. But I'd float that idea past everyone first to get their reactions. If everyone wants to ride 30, we'd only need one group. But if someone wants to come meet with us and ride 10-15 miles, that's totally fine with me. And if someone just wants to come and see the bikes and not ride in a group, that's also OK.
What do you think? We can talk about this on Wednesday.

Chris
P.S. My friend Ann and I did a meandering, not very fast ride around the South Valley yesterday and I ended up doing 51 miles by the time I got home. We are both excited about trying that 50 mile ABQ activity loop sometime after I get back from Costa Rica. She rarely drives and rides all over the city, so she is a great person to talk to about routes. She's also ridden outside the city a fair amount too, including  many times up to Santa Fe, taking the Railrunner back.

I think your plan is a good one, in general. And yes, let’s talk on Wednesday. I look forward to the ride.

Also, I think that we should have a quasi-official photographer to record the event. I’d volunteer, but even with the best intentions and effort, my photography skills are at best mediocre.

I look forward to that ride, assuming I don’t fall into any more extended depressive layoffs, and I’d like to meet Ann. You said you are 63 and that she is older than you. One reason for wanting to meet her is to talk to someone close to my own age — I turned 70 in March — who still can ride greater distances and, I daresay, at faster speeds — than the distances and speeds I am accustomed to; IOW, a concrete example that there is more cycling life in these old bones yet.

Tyler: Yes, we had a nice ride, though with very small participation; Chris can fill in the details if he wishes.

4 people including me and Chris turned up at Bike Inn at 8 am on the 7th, two rode the very short ride and turned back, and Chris and I did a ~40 mile (me) and I think 47 mile ride (Chris) up to Mesa del Sol and return. Very pleasant, wonderful weather, so successful in that regard.

Personally, I’d like to have say monthly or so group rides with like-minded (steel bikes, or at least sensible bikes, slowish) riders.

Interesting idea, Patrick. I'm disappointed to have so carefully organized this, negotiated with people about day/time, etc. and then not gotten anyone that I didn't already know (not that I didn't like riding with you guys). But maybe another way to do it is for you and I just to come up with an ~monthly ride where we pick the date, time, and route and just broadcast that to the group and tell them anyone is welcome to come and there is no need to RSVP: we'll do that ride on that day at that time (we can plan to chat for 10 minutes to give people a chance to show up).  We'll get a ride out of it whether anyone shows up or not, and maybe we'll gradually build up a core group.
What do you think?

That sounds good for me. I’d prefer days other than Sundays, because of church, tho’ I can manage the occasional Sunday.

Perhaps meet at Bike Inn for the Mesa del Sol ride, or perhaps at the Alameda trailhead for Tramway rides? It looks as if the Kickstand Cafe on Alameda is closed, unfortunately. But there’s the Flying Star Cafe at the NE corner of 528 and Corrales Road and the Satellite Coffee on the SE corner; both open at 7 am. Both about 1/2 mile from the trailhead.
