Has anybody used Paul Components Mini Moto brakes and if so, how did you like them?  How big of a tire can you use with them?  I had a V-brake break on my Appaloosa and am looking at a replacement and these look pretty cool and easy to setup/use.

Thanks.

Ryan,

I have mini motos on my Hillborne and they work extremely well. They'll work with most tire sizes (I run 43mm Gravelking SK tubeless), but do not play that nicely with fenders. The cable on mine runs very close to / on top of my SKS fenders.

There are photos online of people running the cable UNDER the fender which seems crazy to me. I say go over, and if it eventually rubs through the plastic fender years down the line, who cares.

I forgot to mention--they are very, very easy to set up. Much less frustrating than a normal v-brake, which aren't very frustrating at all! I especially like that no screw drivers are required, just a 5mm  allen and a 15mm wrench.

Just remember they are short pull, so you'll likely need to replace your Appaloosa's levers as standard v's are long-pull.

I run Minimotos on my BMW Monstercross and I really like them over cantis. I can fit the 43mm Panaracer Gravelking SKs under them. In the winter I put fenders on (45mm SKS) over 38mm Barlow Pass tires. The cable slightly touches one of the fenders, but it doesn't affect operation or safety.

They are easy to install and setup.

I've got them on my Toyo Atlantis with 50mm Gravelkings. There's not a ton of clearance, but the combo works. I'll echo that set up is relatively straightforward, and the performance / modulation is great. My only issue is I wish they had a bit more feedback at the lever.

Any reason for the MiniMoto over the Motolite? On my Hunq the Motolite handles a 50mm Big Ben with fenders, and I could probably squeak 55s in there (in fact I intend to when the time comes). Much prefer them to both flavors of Paul cantis for ease of installation/adjustment, in addition to cleaner cable routing thanks to no hangers. An added benefit in your case would be that you wouldn’t have to change levers.

I've use 'em on multiple bikes, can echo most of what everybody else already said.

I don't think I've had them on anything bigger than a 38mm tire, without fenders, ample clearance there.

Definitely quick and easy to setup, much easier than cantis, including Paul cantis.

I didn't want to pay full pop for a new full bike's worth recently, and got some TRP CX8.4 instead. Not quite as deluxe as the Pauls, but they also setup easily and stop really well. I even used the stock shoes, no problems slowing/stopping my massive body mass.

Just so it's said, not directed at the OP, v-brakes in general offer very responsive braking, but often, depending on the brake lever used, need the shoes adjusted fairly close to the rims. Many electrons have been spilled regarding matching v-brake arm length and brake lever cable pull.

I have used the motolites in the past and liked them and in fact I'm thinking about getting some in the future to convert an old Stumpjumper into 650b.

There are two reasons for looking at the mini-motos right now.  I have a pair of Paul Canti levers sitting around and I kinda like the look of the mini-motos a bit more than the motolites. lol. I'm not really a huge fan of canti brakes, and prefer the linear pull stuff, so that is why I've been looking at the moto-lite.

Thanks!

I had them on my Atlantis and I concur with the previous comments. When I first put them on I was afraid they were too powerful & might land me on my head, but I adapted quickly.

Enough room for wide tires, the exception would be on 26" wheels where you can get some really fat tires or knobby tires. Mounting fenders on my Atlantis would have been an adventure!

I wouldn't recommend it and I only did it to see if it would fit - but - I once recently mounted 27.5 x 2.1 Thunderburts under my Minimotos and the straddle cable did not rub. There was a cm of clearance, maybe.

Do you have any pictures? I’m looking to run the exact same setup.
