my next build is going to be a 1x9 sam and the rear cassette is 11-36.

anyone have success getting a good looking derailer to work with a 36t rear?

I have an XTR M900 SGS that I want to use, but I'm not sure it can handle 36t

front chainring will be in the range of 38-40t

Brenton,

Yes, a XTR M900 will absolutely shift to 36T and is a great choice for a 1x9 Sam. I'd definitely use that.

To anyone else out there wondering about other options, the Deore XT M770 series is a great option as well, you can still still these new, they're mostly silver, and are basically bomb proof. They don't have the cache of the M900, so you can generally find them as a less expensive option.

Looking at the spec sheet shown by Performance Bicycle your chosen derailleur should handle a large rear cog of 46T, well beyond your needed capacity of 36T.  And with your need for a 25T chain wrap capacity the short cage version (37T capacity) should be more than enough.

I'm running an old Shimano XT (RD-M770 "Rapid Rise) over a 14-36 cassette and 44-41-26 triple front.  This long caged derailleur officially has a maximum chain capacity of 45 teeth and shifts over a freewheel from 11 to 34.  The maximum chainwheel difference is listed as 22T, which is irrelevant to you.

Note that my maximum rear cog of 36T exceeds the listed capacity by 2T but I've found it shifts without any issues.

Guy,

Your spec sheet link is for a XTR M9000 which is very different than a XTR M900. (One less zero). I assumed that Brenton was asking about the M900, as that is what he wrote. That derailluer is often listed as a max cog of 32T. But I can assure anyone it will shift to 36T just fine (I'm using it one on my Hunq with an 11-36 cassette).

I stand corrected and need to learn how to count zeros!
