So the zipper on my Hobo Bag broke whilst on tour last month. This
seems like something one could replace (preferably with a metal one)
but I'm not really sure how to go about it. I don't think I can do it
myself, I assume one needs a sewing machine. So any suggestions?

A tailor should be able to fix it for a few dollars.

You say the zipper broke. Do you mean the slider? Are the teeth still
in good shape? Replacing sliders is easy. I'd suggest the book, "the
essential outdoor gear manual" by Annie Getchel -

Also, handsewing really isn't that difficult - the seams on canvas
items are usually pretty straightforward. You might pick up a few tips
on handsewing from the internet. It is easy to undo mistakes and have
a pro take on the repair if necessary. The benefit of learning to
repair your own kit is that you'll be able to do it on tour for
yourself or someone else if it happens again.

As for professional assistance, you might also try going to a
shoemaker/shoe repair shop or a luggage repair shop.

If you're in the bay area check out Narain's Outdoor Sewing and Fabric
in Berkeley. They do good solid work and I've even had them turn down
a job they didn't think they could do right. (Which is a good
thing.) They can seem a little expensive. But it's good to support
the American workers and the existence of a business like this.
