I love that for relatively cheaply ($10-$35) I can change out bar tape and not only change the look of my bikes I can change the feel too. I've tried the Newbaums and Soma tapes from Riv.  I've got a couple rolls of their Japanese tape sitting on my parts shelf for future use. I've also tried a rubbery type tape with Bontrager branding. I haven't disliked any of the tapes I've tried, and I've kind of enjoyed their differences.

I think the next 2 on my list to pick up are Fizik Microtex and Lizardskins DSP.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who's used either of these regarding if/how/why you liked them.

Does anyone have a bar tape that they particularly love?

In the spirit of elevating my bag-matcher status... has anyone tried to match bar tape to their green Sackville bags? I assume green cloth wrap + a few coats of amber shellac would get reasonably close.

Long ago, when I had my dark green Bombadil, I used Newbaum's green tape (sold by Riv) and amber shellac that I prepared myself. The color was gorgeous and it would have been a great match for the green Sackville bags. You can see a close-up here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/4530205372/in/set-72157622958472288

Right now I've switched to Bullmoose bars on almost all my bikes and love the ergonomic PDW leather grips. However, for the last year+ I've been using honey Brooks leather tape and love it. Also tried the natural Berhoud tape and love how it looks. On my old pre-Riv days, the bar tape I preferred the most was the Fizik; in fact, when I got my AHH I first used Fizik tape on it. Like Rene, I like Brooks  and  have become an almost exclusive user of their leather tape. It lasts a long time and is very comfy to me.  Toshi leather tape is also very nice but not as long lasting.  I have not liked Selle Anatomica bar tape. It doesn't look as nice, stay in place as well or feel as good to me.

I do match bar tape to saddle color as closely as possible, but not to bag colors.

I've been using Bontrager tape for the last few "wraps" that I've done. It looks good (the brown color goes well with Brooks saddles and tan canvas), provides good padding, and is long enough to wrap the bars nice and thick. It also doesn't have permanent glue on the back, so you can unwrap and re-wrap the bars without destroying the tape.

Eric

That's what I don;t like about it. It won't stay in place!  email me your snail and I'll send you my Bontrager!

If your tape moves around, trying wrapping first with electrical friction tape.

Handlebra suggests it, I have Handlebra on one bike, it does stay in place
and the color is still solid.

What color tape goes with British racing green ?

As does the Wikipedia. It is one of the classic uses of friction tape.

Handlebra dark brown or fine cigar; Fujitoshi honey.

The dark green Viva might match British Racing Green, or be a tone of
it. I had it on my Quickbeam. http://www.flickr.com/photos/philipwilliamson/261997643/
Magenta tape could look nice as a complementary color. Brown or
leather for sure.

The "Dark Piney Green" Japanese tape with a few coats of amber shellac is a pretty good match for the Sackville bags, but RBW appears to be out of it at the moment.  That tape is probably my least favorite to apply though - the adhesive is stickier than my old favorite Tressostar, and it has a backing paper that you have to fight with.

I'm a fan of the Velo Orange elkhide bar wrap. I've had it on two bikes now, and it holds up well and ages nicely. It's more work to install, but the price is right.

I've got brown Salsa tape on right now.
Works great, good match for my honey Brooks and rewrapped no problem
when I changed out my stem.

I got about a year of mine. It looked good until sweat did a number on it. In cooler climes it would last longer. There's a Walnut Studios Handlebra set on the shelf to try. It's a thicker version of the V-O style and I have hopes it will go longer. It will go on this bike in the near future (and when I get my loaned out brown saddle back)

I'm using the Fizik Microtex on my commuter's dirt drop bar. I was
interested in the micro texture contribution for the rain snow, ice
sweat, etc. Works fine. Some fraying of the edges where the material
is wearing away but its been in service for three years, an outcome of
the increased grip.

I use brown cloth tape with amber shellac on my Ram that's my
baseline. In the coldest situations (wearing big mitts not designed as
cycling equipment) the friction is a bit less than other times. Hardly
a complaint, but riding home in the most recent installation of winter
slop here illustrated how important some extra tactile grip is as the
slush/snow at the edge of the wheelpath can suddenly grab the front
wheel. A slip on the bar at that instant could mean an unplanned hard
flop to the left (traffic) instead of the mere deceleration of a brief
detour into the deeper slop which can be gently steered out of to
regain steadier footing.

After letting the dog out and seeing the early morning precipitation I
may have to think about making tire chains for the commuter before
replacing the tape.

Thanks for the responses. There's enough here to last several tape changes. I'll post pics as I make changes.

Cheers.

I like old tire tubes. One tube produces two strips long enough to wrap both sides of the bar. The strips wrap well, look good, and are comfortable.

+1 on the velo Orange sew on bar wrap. Put some cloth tape down code to build some body and it is comfortable.

The rubber is fine when wet. It sheds water. It feels good.

I've done a number of bars for friends. None have gone back to bike shop tape. There's no reason to. The material is comfortable. It looks great. And the price is unbeatable.

I have Brooks on my Sam and Lizardskins on my Seven. The Lizardskin
feels plush but I stiil prefer the Brooks Leather.

This is obviously an instance of "YMMV", but Brooks handlebar tape is,
to my hands, one of the worst cycling products I've ever used. Not
that it was poorly made, but it was just incredibly uncomfortable for
riding >60 miles, especially in warm weather.

Cheap synthetic stuff is my old stand-by.

I enjoy the cheaper velo-orange leather handlebar tape which is no
longer available. The newer, more expensive stuff is here:
http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/grand-cru-perf-leather-tape-w-plugs.html

I've ridden this tape in all kinds of weather, done 3 or 4 re-wraps
and it's still feels and looks fantastic. Under the leathers is
strategically placed cork tape, ripped into bite-sized pieces and
electrical taped in place (thank you Jay Ritchey).

Here's an image of A. Homer following the most recent re-wrap:

Wow, it's like ... shocking blue. Somebody went a little crazy with
the HDR Pro iPhone settings (thanks for turning me onto it, Rene!).
