Hello all!

I have followed the group for a while. In 2010, in college, I bought my first "serious" dependable bike, a Surly Long Haul Trucker. A friend of mine owned a Hunqapillar, and I was always envious. She introduced me to Rivendell. Over the years I have bought a number of parts and accessories, always wanting a Riv. I am tempted to buy new, but wanted to put some feelers out to see if anyone was getting rid of a large Hillborne, ideally in the Sage color.

Check with Rivelo in portland. I think they have a used 62 in great shape.

There was a 64 that came up on the group maybe 1-2 years ago, I was sorry that I missed out on it.

I think that’s mine Jim! A Waterford canti 64? Like it a lot, though I also like my newer Appaloosa. if I ever sell it I’ll let ya know!

There are two 62 cm Sam Hillborne bikes and a 62 cm Sam Hillborne frameset on the Garage Sale pages of the Rivendell website.  There is also a presale special for the new AHH which has some updates and improvements on the original AHH/Sam designs.

It was crickets back in 2016, https://groups.google.com/forum/m/?utm_source=digest&utm_medium=email#!searchin/rbw-owners-bunch/FS$2064$20Hillborne$20$20/rbw-owners-bunch/Y7Nb7-tGXOE
I guess folks may have been wary of a repaired frame... sold for a song, wish I still had it set up as a racer.

Thank you everyone for the information. Still looking for options. I would prefer canti brakes. And sage is my favorite, but open to other colors. Does anyone know much about the Waterford made Sam's? When did they stop making them there? Any difference in geometry, possible shorter chain stays? I currently have a 62cm Surly Cross Check. It feels a little small for me. I have a 95PBH.

Hi Cody,

Here's a link to the old geometry charts including the Waterford Sams:

When I got my Hillborne, the 64 was the only one made in Wisconsin. I think they all were cantilever ready, probably could've gotten it without. And at 95 PBH, I'd say you should be taking aim at the 64. I was at the very top of the range and it was a bit small, would've been perfect for me with some drop bars. For you, I think you'd find it accommodating to most anything. As for finding one, hang out on the bridges and you might get lucky!

I'll second Kai's recommendation of the 64cm if you have a PBH of 95cm. My PBH is 93.5cm and my 65cm AHH is building up to fit just perfectly. I don't think I'd want it to be any smaller.

Best,
Reed

Thank you Kainalu and Reed. According to the geometry charts, the Waterford Sam, size 64cm, has a stand over height of 91.5cm. The current Sam, size 62cm, has a stand over height of 90.5. Is that 1cm difference going to feel much different? In the 64cm Sam, the top tube appears to be 2cm longer, and the chain stays are 1cm shorter.

Ah, good point Cody! I forgot that unlike my Hilsen the current Sam has a 6° sloping top tube. The 62cm 6° New-Sam has the same theoretical 62.5cm top tube as my 65cm 1.5° Waterford-Hilsen. Should get the bars up just about as high and fit just about the same. I got it wrong, I bet you'd fit just fine on the 62cm New-Sam. (And I bet I would too!)

You're right about the longer top tube on the 64cm Waterford-Sam compared to the 62cm New-Sam. All other things being equal (and all bodies being proportional) the longer TT'd 64cm Waterford-Sam might be predisposed to work a bit better with upright bars, and the shorter TT'd 62cm New-Sam might be preferable for drop bars. But I suspect both would work out with either.

All that said, bear in mind what Grant said on the old Rambouillet flyer:
"The least useful [fit information], yet most likely to be harped on, is top tube length. You cannot compare bikes by top tube length unless seat tube angles and head tube height and steerer length are exactly the same."

Of course he's right. The Hilsen I'm building only needed a 1cm shorter stem to put the bars in the same place as my custom Fitz, which has a 2cm shorter top tube!

Best,
Reed

Is the stand over height calculated at the actual top top with the 6 degree slope, or the theoretical top tube?

I had a sick wife and a newborn baby then and I just didn't see it soon enough.  I would have snapped it up in a second if I had seen it.

Standover is usually measured at the actual top tube in the rough center between seatpost and stem, if I remember correctly.

Hi Cody, if you strike out here we have a 62cm canti Sam frame in stock. We also have a 62cm caliper complete in orange.

Cheers,

Hello again all!

I wanted to report that last fall I found a beautiful 64cm double top tube Waterford made Atlantis from a fellow forum member. I am still adjusting a few things here and there, but wanted to share some photos.

Thank you everyone for helping me find my first Rivendell : )

Best,
Cody
