21 miles in the dirt today (haven't made it up to the Rio Rancho
sandhills) just east of the River and along the back side of Corrales,
which is a very interesting village combining old rural/farming, rural
slum, McMansion, ranchette and just plain weird. Four pavement miles,
17 dirt miles, much of it sandy.

I didn't re-inflate after my cussing attempt to measure t pressure
with my Topeak electric Chinese POS, but just rode -- 11 psi front,
14.5 rear. This was fine and worked very well in the sand while only
causing minor sidewall flop in corners on pavement. A couple of the
photos below show my 29er tire footprint compared to the typical,
hard, narrow 2 inchers.

I wish someone made a Flite with springs. The Flite on the Fargo is
very, very comfortable but when you ride over choppy, horse-churned
dirt the constant, jerking up-and-down is much worse (with my tires)
than washboard.

Whoops, forgot to set it to "public." It's fixed.

Not to fan the flames, but Patrick, have you heard the rumors of a 29x3"+ fatbike coming out of Surly?  Seems like it could be just the bike for this kind of stuff.  There's a couple of spy shots floating around somewhere....Maybe we'll see something at Interbike (september).

This makes the dirt roads in Vermont look like heaven.  Come to think of it, the're about as good as it gets.  Unfortunately for tourist, all the bike resources ignore our great dirt roads.

Yep, that's the reason for the Fargo's very fat wheelset. At about 61
mm actual on the 44 mm rims, I can run them 12/15 for nice float on
sand (or dust) and really, the surfaces are not so bad. I have a
"skinny" 27 mm wide Sun Rhyno/35 mm Kojak wheelset for other surfaces.

The sandy bosque trails are actually quit fun -- tho' many have been
closed down because of the near-100F temps and sub 10% humidity. I do
like firm dirt, tho'; remember the nice LA-area rides on firm CA dirt
with my brother on 32 mm tires. (Note: the fat BAs cruise on firm dirt
just about as fast as they cruise on pavement; of course, the Kojaks
cruise faster on pavement.)

Actually, the 60s on the fat rims work very well. I probably would not
switch unless I were to switch to a real fat-bike like the Pugsley;
and I don't see the need for that, really, in my circumstances.
