I'm just about ready to pull the trigger on a Pass & Stow rack for my Clem. While Clem isn't the typical bike for a big front load, I've had pretty good success with a Wald basket on a Soma rack. That rack needs to go back on another back.
What I'd really like is front panniers, with the option of a light, bulky items on top, and be able to carry the occasional takeout order easily.
I was thinking Nitto 32f front rack with the Hub Area rack, and I'd need to add a basket on top.
Seems like the Pass & Stow rack fits my needs better. Just curious about folks using that rack with front panniers.

Not a direct answer to the Pass & Stow specifically, but I use the Surly Nice Rack on the front of my Clem with a couple front panniers and an Acorn rando bag resting on top. I'm trying like one of Grant's bikes and just living with all those on the bike. It seems to handle weight in the panniers fine. I haven't had an excuse to haul a folding end table on it yet like I did on the predecessor, so, I don't know how it handles weird weight higher on the platform, but it did fine on a beer run with a six pack in each pannier last night, at any rate. So long as I keep the weight split evenly it seems to ride fine.

I have a P&S rack on my Bombadil. Extremely versatile -- I've had a large Wald basket on it, and I've also ridden the bike with small Berthoud panniers on it (paired with medium Berthoud panniers on the rear, with tent, sleeping bag and pad spread over the rack platforms. Rode well in all configurations. Pics of various iterations are on my Flickr stream.

You didn't ask this question specifically, but I'll answer it anyway: the P&S rack is beautifully made and well thought out. It has light mounts, and provides for internal routing of wiring. Very solid and flexible mounting system. I love it.

You might want to check out the Haulin Colin rack also. The price is similar to the Pass & Stow, but it uses the mid-fork braze-ons. I have one on my Soma GR and I'm planning on adding a lowrider rack for touring this summer.

But the Pass & Stow is pretty slick (I didn't realize it had the internal routing for lighting wires) and would give you lots of options carrying stuff.

I also use a Nitto 32F with a basket on my Quickbeam and it works really well.

Now that I've finished typing this, I realize that I'm not helping at all. Maybe just buy one of each!

HI David. I have a Pass & Stow on my Cheviot. I have used it with a Freight Porteur bag, front panniers, a Wald basket and combos of those. Keeping the load low helps with wheel flop. If I fill up the Porteur bag the front gets a mind of its own.

The internal path for dyno wiring keeps things pretty tidy.

My only issue was clearing the side pull brake up front - you might want to check the clearance for the straddle wire on the v-brakes. You could probably flip the mounting plate for the fork crown attachment upside down to improve the situation but he is happy to work on custom solutions for mounting.

Let me know is you want more info / pics.

Got here too late.  Very happy with my Pass Stow.

n.b.:  While the Freight Bag Dan mentions above looks nice, my experience with the company is very bad.  I paid for one on line.  Bag never showed.  All my e-mails were for naught.  I guess I could have sued, but being out of state makes pressing a small claims case throwing good money after bad.

The Swift Pelican I ultimately got works well.

Thanks for all that replied. My Clem has cantilever brakes (built it up from a frameset) so there shouldn't be any interference mounting to center hole. Looks like I could use the mounting slots to use a couple struts and utilize the top fork mounts. I'll try the rack mount as it is first of course.
I'll be making my own bags, panniers and a low profile porteur bag of some sort. I'll have time to figure that out. I also added a rear Tubus Vega rack, so Clem will be able to haul quite a bit once the front rack arrives.

Same experience. They claimed it was delivered. They were unable to send me tracking number, and said they would refund. Didn't answer any follow up emails for a month as I never got the refund. Ultimately had to go through my bank. Fortunately, I saved all emails and documentation and had them on record that they would refund the amount. Was about a week and a half of back and forth between my bank and I, but got it cleared.

Matt, Mr. P&S, also has a new 3-Rail front rack (about half the width of the porteur), and a new back rack in the works. He also said he has found a new, more durable powder-coat for the racks.

I ordered a 3-Rail rack for myself a few days ago.

I've used my P&S porteur on my Hunq. Very nice, very strong, very useful by itself or with a basket, or with panniers.

Yeah. I was an idiot and did not save my e-mails.  Lesson learned big time!

Late to the party, but I will share a couple thoughts.  By all accounts the P&S rack is nice, but it is also as expensive as a custom porteur rack and the more adaptable a rack is, generally the more flexible and heavier it will be.  Depending on your goal and price point, there are a couple CETMA racks that are similar function and cheaper, if more crude (http://cetmacargo.com/pages/cetma-racks-info), and Wald has a giant rack-sket now (http://www.waldsports.com/index.cfm/store/front-baskets/257-ewalde28099s-multi-fit-front-rack/) that is way cheaper than anything similar.

I considered going custom, pricepoint would've been similar for a porteur rack with rails for panniers. The downside would be I'd need to send the builder my fork, then I'd be out my daily rider for a while. The P&S rack's ability to fit other bikes is a plus for me. If I ever get an itch to set up my Clem differently, the rack will easily fit a couple other bikes I have. If I'd gone custom, the rack most likely wouldn't fit another bike.
The goal was to have a porteur rack platform with front panniers. Price wise, Nitto 32f & Hub Area Rack would be more expensive and I wouldn't have the large platform.

Pass Stow is definitely lighter than the Cetma 5 rail.  Not familiar with the other Cetma racks.

Probably true, my wording wasn't as precise as it should have been.  A custom rack that is all welded/brazed will be stronger and lighter than anything similar that bolts together, assuming similar materials.  I was just throwing out the CETMA and Wald as non-custom options that don't cost as much as custom rack...

Yes, I had to send out my fork and front fender when I had my custom SS porteur rack made years ago.  And if you anticipate changing bikes, the P&S can adapt to the new one as well.  And if you find a porteur rack isn't for you, a P&S will retain more of its value than a custom rack, although a custom for a relatively common bike would probably also be pretty easy to sell...

Doug

P.S.  Not that it matters in this instance, but the CETMA Half Rack is also pannier compatible...

I gave a custom porteur rack to someone on the list.  Always wondered whether he was able to get it to work on his bike.  With luck he sees this and chimes in.

I have a P&S on my Sam with a medium Wald basket.
I love it and it comes with a nice light mount too!

I used my P&S rack on both my Hunqapillar and my Atlantis and mounted via the internal cable route an Edelux I headlight. It worked very well, and I used it mostly with a basket for the Sackville ShopSacks. It is one of the first steel (not black) racks they started doing and its held up very well.

Since I've now settled on the Campee front/rear racks for the Atlantis which I like better, I'm going to sell my P&S rack and for now, keeping the Edelux light installed in it.

I will be traveling on Saturday for two weeks, so the formal post will come later, but if anyone is interested, please let me know off-list. Asking $300 + shipping for the combo OBO.

Mounting to the fork crown is an interesting idea. The slots are set a bit wider than the fork though, so you may have to do some bending to get that to work. Don't write off the stock mounting plate, it's sturdy and very easy to set up.

Here's my 650 Clem with P&S rack carrying about 15lbs of kibble.

Great rack, ridden thousands of miles with it before getting the Clem. A little bit of shimmy at downhill speed but I usually ride the brakes with a load as I'm afraid of hitting a bump and losing a 12 pack. I generally don't ride with front panniers as I find too much weight up front to makes handling feel like I'm riding a cart pulled by a team of oxen, but I have thrown on a pair when I had no rack load and appreciate the option.

You won't be disappointed, these are so much better than a Cetma rack, and I say that having owned one prior to the P&S

The CETMA racks are, unfortunately, garbage. I have an older generation Half-Rack and the workmanship is very poor - I almost thought about trying to return it when I got it, I was so dismayed.

The P&S seems miles better in terms of quality. I intended to get one before going all in on a custom one.

Pass and Stow were at NAHBS and while I was there the infamous Gary Helfrich came by and bought a rack. That to me is a ringing endorsement to the quality and build of Pass and Stow.

I always thought the quote "Hoopless is Hopeless"   referring to front Lowriders was from Gary Helfrich. Someone either here or on the Bob list attributed this to Bruce Gordon recently. Steve

I've used a Pass & Stow rack previously on a G1 Kogswell and currently on my daily driver Pelican for the last several years:

Both have been low trail bikes, but it seems really bombproff anyway. I sometimes use panniers with a flat top, sometimes strap my Zugster rando bag on top for tidy commuting. I fully endorse it.

No mention yet of the SOMA porteur here, but I've been using it for 4+ years on my commuter, and I can't recommend it highly enough. I've carried everything from 30 pounds of books to an old Weber grill that I found on the side of the road, disassembled, and strapped on. Putting a basket on a porteur kinda defeats the purpose, though. The table itself is highly versatile. Velo Orange sells a duffle bag that integrates well with a porteur rack.

I saw the Potluck rack on the Box Dog Bikes webstore so it looks like they've got them in stock there.

As far as the Pass & Stow i'm glad to see all the praise, I've been wanting to get one but I just haven't pulled the trigger yet.

The Pass & Stow works great with top loads and panniers. When I have a child seat blocking the rear rack, I can move panniers to the front, no problem. I do wish that I had a bag for the top rack for better load balancing, but I too have had problems with Freight - fortunately, it seems, before giving them any money.

The feature that attracted me to Freight's version was their backpack straps. Matthew, or someone else with a Swift bag, do you think the retaining clips on the back of the Swift are far enough apart that they could be used as attachment points for backpack straps, along with the loop at the top?

Hi all,
I'm new to this group and came to it via searching about this Pass & Stow. It seems to me to be the perfect combination of needs, from panniers to top platform to not being "too' big (eg Surly 24-pack). Does anyone have some updated pix, especially with bags and/or wald basket, to share? I noticed somebody sold theirs a few days ago, and if anyone else is still interested in selling theirs, please reach out.
Thanks again, and y'all have a great community I'm excited to join.

The real advantage of the Pass and Stow rack is the stiffness and stability of it: it won't break, and it won't sway or wobble.  Good strength/weight ratio.  That is a real advantage, which none of the alternatives possess.  Also MUSA by a cool guy.

If you don't want a custom rack, or you want to be able to switch your rack from one bike to another, there will never be a reason to regret springing for the Pass and Stow.  A light mounts perfectly under the platform, so as to be protected from impacts but not obstruct the beam.  There's internal wiring holes.  It's lovely.
