I know it's been years but I always thought it was one of the hottest bikes Riv ever produced.  Not enough of a market?  I was looking through some of the shots of the staff bikes on the site.

Inquiring minds...?

Slightly segwaying: how does the Legolas compare in geometry, tubing,
weight, ride, to the Roadeo? Am I right in thinking that the L was a
no-holds-barred lightweight cross racing machine? Wonder how it would
do on road: would it have that remarkable Rivendell ride quality on
pavement, particularly in fast sweeping turns?

I remember reading a while ago that they it was in hibernation but they would do it as a special order if you called them, now not saying that offers still stands or if you would be in full blown custom money or anything mind you.

I saw the tubing specs at Riv. The Legolas and Roadeo have the same tubing for top and seat tubes, fork blades and chain stays. The Legolas downtube is slightly heavier. The Leg makes a great road bike too. For mine I have 28mm road tires on one set of wheels and 40mm cross tires on another set of wheels. I don't know what stopped production of the bike, but I believe the name was shut down by the Hobbit licensing people.

My understanding is that RBW said they would do no more models with
new Middle Earth™ names. I don't think that precluded the Legolas as
much as it was a very narrowly niched bicycle. (Bombadil, for example,
is still in production). It was what I was saving up for when John/GP
said, "hey, why don't you ride this new bicycle we're calling Homer...."

IIRC, the Legolas followed the custom pink CX which Mark A.'s wife had
made.

And, I don't think that the Legolas was _in_ _actuality_ a niche
model. I still think one of the most spectacularly useful bikes RBW
has come up - max clearance with the canti setup, and ready to cover
road and trails with aplomb.

VO workshop....ahh the things we do to advance our profession.)

There I was, at RBW talking to Mark and Keven, cash in hand, a beautiful red Legolas fameset in my size in the repair stand. And I didn't buy it. Yeah, I think about this sometimes...

I love my Legolas! It has a subtly more snappy ride than my 2001 Road custom. I love the tire clearances, I love the whimsical lugs, I love the mixed surface rides that it encourages. I have put SKS longboard fenders on it this year that I may pull off so I can fit larger cross tires, such as the Conti Cyclocross Speed tires I recently bought from Rivendell.

On the road I have found it climbs as well or better than the Riv Road, but with higher trail it doesn't descend as well. Descending in the dirt though, it feels plenty fast so it seems like a good compromise. I have mine set up with the 12-36 9 speed cassette and 36/50 up front so it has low low gears and is fun on steep mountain dirt roads and less technical single track. The Legolas is a very verstile bike with very little compromise on the road but really shines on mixed surface rides.
