I'm looking at trying the Crust Towel Rack drops on my Hunqapillar, but I'm not sure which stem to choose.

The 8cm Dirt Drop stem seems to have about the same reach as the 7cm Tallux, but I'm suspicious that I'm going to need something a bit closer? Maybe???

So, I'd like to hear if anyone has found their favorite stem for their Towel Rack drops. Or maybe what didn't work for you, that might help too.

I'm not planning on using these for single track, more like something in the "paved road-to-bad fire/logging road" spectrum.

Thanks in advance,

John

Analog “(w)right” stem? No reach or 30mm reach. 26.0 or 31.8 clamp. I actually have a zero reach 26.0 and original version of the Crust towel rack/leather bar I plan to try on my Clem but life has knocked that project down a few pegs on the priority list. Someone here also just recently listed a 31.8 analog stem for sale along with a few other items.

Hi Brian,
Thanks, I was hoping some RBW owner was riding the Crust bars, maybe on their Atlantis or Hunq or something, and had found a stem they really liked.

For me, the new & improved Analog stems are still more of a "fingers crossed" option.

I'm on the Analog "stem news updates" email list for the next run of w(Right) stems. James of Analog said the next run of Analog w(Right) stems will be Taiwan-made, and 31.8mm only with a 4 bolt face plate, plus other improvements, so I'll need a shim to use this new version of the stem. But they have yet to get through the prototype and testing phase, let alone production and shipping.

John, unfortunately I suspect no Riv Riders have tried the Crust bar yet..at least I haven't seen any here or on the Instagrambook. I have this coming next week which kinda mimics what you're looking to do: Flared drops on a shorty stem to make a Riv frame commonly spec'd with pullbacks work. I'll letcha know what I think soon, stay tuned!

Hi Joe,
Very cool, I'm very interested to hear what you think of the handling with the 0cm offset stem.

Thanks,
John

Awesome Joe! Glad that was you that snatched up that sweet Atlantis! I’m looking to do the same- put some drop bars (not necessarily the towel rack) on my 56cm Atlantis, so I also look forward to your impressions. Congrats and enjoy!

Mark: Hehe, yeah, I had to do some bike selling on this end and parts dropping on theirs (I'm using some of my stash) to get the purchase done, but I just had to have it. Atlantis is one of the few Rivs I've never owned, and all that black/gold stuff going on with the wheels, brakes, fenders and racks...it's too much! Add the cool bars/stem and shifters and I'm all the way in. I can't wait!

Sean Lerner (https://www.instagram.com/seanlerner/) formerly of the Bay now of Oregon has had Crust bars on his Hunq in the past. He'll have good opines.

I have a Crust Towel Rack that I am planning on installing on my Appaloosa tomorrow if I can figure out where I put my brake levers. When I ride it some I will let you know how it is.

I’m planning on a short stem for this, an 8cm dirt drop...if I had something shorter on hand I would go with that. The real issue is that the reach on the Appaloosa is a bit long for drops, and I’m not a flexible long torso kind of dude, so I need to get them a bit closer and higher than I normally would.

It’s a wide bar that seems to be well made, so I’m excited to try it out. I may not like it though, and if not I’ll go back to the bullmoose bars and maybe try to fit the crust bars on my Niner.

Did you end up installing the Towel Rack on your Appaloosa?

Looks good John
Do you know the width of those bars?
Looks like they are currently offered in a 615mm, 645mm and 675mm option.
I believe the early model was 700mm?

I use the Nitto NTC-DX in 70cm reach with my towel rock on an MUSA Homer.  Important to know it is an MUSA Homer because the top tube is not as long as the MIT Homer, so the reach is not as long as the MIT homer.  I like a wide stance or grip with a shorter reach, so this set up works well for me in drop bar.  I have not used any other stems.  The stem is linked below.

I should note this stem is the same as the one Rivendell sells, but the quill length is shorter.  I think Riv is 225mm, while the one I am using is 190mm.

Hey Stephen,

Those photos are a big help. I've been waiting on the next generation of Analog Cycles 3cm stems, but I've been leaning towards that 5cm Technomic (1st choice), or the 8cm Dirt Drop or 7cm Technomic as runner ups.

How long have you been riding that set up and how do you like it so far? Any downsides or unexpected upsides?

Thanks again for posting your photos,

John

Forgot to say, the Black tires, black B17 and black bar tape look great on that green Hunq.

John,
Thank you. I've been riding with this setup for 8 months or so...maybe a bit longer. I ride roads and light trail rides; can't ever say I've ever "mountain biked"...I enjoy a nice saunter into the forest to make coffee and take pictures. I have no complaints about the bars or stem...I also looked into the 3cm (W)right stem...the upside of the Technomic is that I saved a butt-ton of money and that it matches all the silver bits 'n bobs on my bike. I've toured, commuted, and lollygagged with this setup and can definitely reccomend it. Let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be happy to share my experience. ✌

I'm using a 64cm wide Towel Rack on my Crust Evasion with a 7cm stem. The TT for my Evasion is 60cm (XL) and it feels about right for rambling. If I were using the bike as a dedicated mountain bike, or just riding singletrack more frequently, I'd consider using a Crust 40cm LD stem with the bars to get them up higher and for riding in the drops more frequently. I've had the bars on my bike about 2 weeks and they'yre great, feel totally normal. Hood placement is a little tricky, Good luck.

Hey jandrews,

I'm sorry but I missed your question back in April and just now found it.

The bars didn't work on the Appaloosa for me as I didn't have a short enough stem that made the drops comfortable enough on that bike. I wound up installing the towel rack bars on my Kona Jake the Snake CR instead and they are working great. I'm using a pretty short Paul Components Boxcar stem and it makes the bike handle really well. The reach on the Appaloosa is just too long for me to comfortably use drops on the bike.
