Simworks Potluck rack + panniers?

Hi all,

I'm a frequent lurker, rare poster. Recently picked up a used V.1 Simworks Potluck rack to feel a little better about loading up my Wald 137 and have been wondering about how I might attach a bit more gear for the possibility of an S24O or the like.

The horizontal rails below the platform seem like they could support some mini-panniers, though it doesn't seem like an ideal arrangement for different reasons, including that the weight limit is 15lbs? (According to an older post here.)

Has anyone tried this, or other strategies, or have a brilliant idea? I'm probably overthinking it and won't actually need that much gear for an overnight, but I'm curious about others' experience and thoughts.

i feel like i'd feel more comfortable if there was a tang that went to the brake bridge. in lieu of that, maybe a strap from handlebars to the tombstone? 

i have no experience, just looking at the pics for the potluck and feel like i'd be scared using it for both basket and mini panniers.

I think that's attached in enough places to hold more of a load.  It's steel.  Those rails are clearly meant to mount panniers.  I'd go for it and not look back (says the man who carried his entire family's possessions on a Tara and an aluminum Racktime rear - I was clearly over the load limit for both, no problem).

with the caveat that we are all adults and need to make our own decisions.   personally I would be ok with lighter loads like sleeping bags, tents on the side of this rack.  in lieu of panniers (which themselves add weight), consider those adventure style cages that strap to the fork, or rack like this one.  https://www.salsacycles.com/gear/anything_cage_hd

they are meant to attack to bosses on side of fork, but can also be strapped on if careful.   I do this but on the rear of the bike to get the extra carrying capacity for my lighter stuff.
