My Charlie H Gallop is about to evolve from "Lord Charles" to "Uncle Charlie".  These nicknames are borrowed from the slang classifications of MLB curveballs.

"Lord Charles" is an ultralight build.  Uncle Charlie is going to be a sport touring build.  The changes will be small but significant:

I'll swap out my ultralight HED Ardennes RA Black wheelset for another set of HED wheels, these with normal number of spokes, hand built by me, identical rim cross section, and with a dynamo front hub.  I will also swap in more butch tires.  One of a few Gravel King variants in my holdings.

The drivetrain will go from 1x10 friction to 1x11 index.  That will get me a clutch rear derailer and less chain stay slap, along with a lower low gear.  I'm still going to mount my single shifter on the stem.

I'll move from a minimalist racing bike saddle to something more apropos for all day riding.

I'll add a rack, or two, and maybe a basket but still no fenders.

In total, it may go from 20 pounds up to 23 or 24 pounds.  We'll see.  Here's the before shot that I've shown a lot.

This bike is also my "recovery" platform.  I'm running 165mm cranks on this bike as I continue to rehab a leg fracture.  I might have the conversion done as soon as this weekend.

Nice Bill!

Excited to see the finished Charlie in its new form. Hope the rehab is going smoothly!

That is one handsome bicycle. And impressively light weight - in either configuration. I think I’ve forgotten what it is like to ride a lightweight bike.
Hope the healing is fast.

I can't see how you can go wrong with a set up like that.  Great work!

Bill - what are the grips that you have on the bar "hooks"??  How do you like them??   I'm looking to do something similar on Billie Bars.  thanks!!

Those are Keirin (track) grips that I bought from Jitensha Studio.  This Flickr photo shows them in their package:

If you zoom in on the package you can see the thicknesses.  This is the Type A 2mm thickness, and I like it fine.

Nice, nice. Looking forward to seeing the new build.

I just went through the same process... The bike really belongs to one of my kids (a b-day present). I had it set-up originally with all black components, even fitted carbon tubulars with fat (36 mm) tubulars to see how light I could get it. That was fun, but we felt that somehow it didn't really fit the character of the bike. I now reverted it to a silver build, and also mounted light-ish Nitto front and rear racks (I have a couple of Baggins bags designed for the racks...)

Here's that silver build that's nearly "finished," when I took it out on a test ride to work and back recently. Have to say, I really really really wanted to get one for myself after I got back! There's something special about how it rides...

Such a lovely color!  I like the mustard Riv had on recent runs of the Plat and Roaduno, but the dark gold on the Charlie really pops.

Bill - Uncle Charlie is looking great!  Wishing you a speedy recovery, and lots of joy on your recovery platform.

Nice bike, that Charlie.

For those of you that have them how are they in terms of being a road focused sort of bike? How's the frame flex and handling, etc.? I'm sort of looking at one as a lighter and sprightlier complement to my Clem. I've tried to retrofit my Romulus with flat bars but I'm not getting where I want to be with it. It really wants to be a drop bar roadie. Speaking with Will at Rivendell he sympathized with my efforts and suggested looking into the Charlie Gallup.

I've had my Gallop right at two months. So far I've ridden 350 miles in the Texas summer, all of which have been road. Looking at it is almost as good as riding it. I love this thing.

It took over a month to get around to it, but I finally got around to it.  My Charlie H Gallop is now set up as an indexed 1x11.  Objective 1 was to get lower gears.  Objective 2 was to run a clutch rear der and mitigate chain slap.  Objective 3 was/is indexing.  The inherited rear wheel has a Dura Ace hub and the front is a SP dynamo.  It's much less of a weight-weenie bike now.

I like that build a lot, well done.  Where I live, this would be a great around-town bike for grabbing small times, while taking the long way on/off road to make the most out of errands.  Take off the rack, etc, like you had it before, and it's plenty fast.

Hope your healing is on track!
