FS: Frame - Susie W. Longbolts / Wolbis Slugstone 53cm!

Hello Everyone!

I have a beautiful BLUE Susie W. Longbolts frame for sale in the (now sold out) 53cm size. 

Comes with a 73cm square taper Shimano 113 BB installed, which will pair perfectly with most Sugino or Rivendell cranks. If you need a seatpost I am happy to throw in a new 26.8 Rivendell Seatpost as well, as I have an extra here.

(Susies don't come with seatpost of bottom bracket like other Riv frames, Will told me it's because they figure some people might want to use modern cranks).

Price is $1500 and I'll ship it anywhere in the continental US for free. Trying to keep the price fair as this board has been such a useful source of advice for me!

Nothing bad to say about the Susie! Received the frame new a few weeks ago from Rivendell, figured as a replacement for the Atlantis that I use as a gravel/dirt road bike. After building it up and riding the Susie a dozen miles (on Asphalt) I realized I just prefer the Atlantis — I'm probably just used to my old bike. We live in town now, and I have limited storage so can't keep it for fun as I'd wish.

The frame is in perfect condition besides being built up once and ridden for a few hours. I'm a fairly experienced builder, and mainly tested the bike on the road. There are no scuffs or marks I can find. I don't think this Susie would come off as anything but brand new once it is built it up by you!

That's a really nice deal on a new bike that is out of stock. Plus bonus parts. Plus, lest we forget, it's also a Wolbis Slugstone (see ye olde head badge)!

I got my 56 Susie last week and just took it out of the box yesterday.  What a sweet frame, beautiful fillet brazing and lots of fun details. I am determined to build the wheels this weekend after overhauling and adjusting the hubs.

It’s a super-cool bike. If nobody buys it soon I’m tempting myself to keep it and use it as a second gravel bike. :) 

I’d probably have to throw out our lawnmower to fit another bike in our shed, however!

This's a very good deal!  The next batch is probably 18 month out or longer.

Of the two Rivs and two other bikes I have Susie is the one that gets ridden the most these days.  Gravel rides with kid's trailer attached, grocery runs, bring take out food from next town, a 8-mile quick fitness ride during lunch breaks.. this bike can be used so many ways.  I even did a 100k a month ago.  Now I'm planning a loaded multi-day tour on Susie sometime this year.   Best of luck Paul.

Hello Everyone.

Thanks for your kind words about the frame. 

This is kind of embarrassing. 😌 I'm keeping the bike.

After thinking about why the Susie wasn't working for me, and getting inspired by Mark's post — and some friendly nudges from my wife who (she's amazing) supports my endless obsession with bicycles!!! — I decided to give the Susie another chance. 

First I spent some time measuring the frame and comparing with my other bikes. They key issue, for me at least, was that the frame is so long it sort of begs you to to put Boscos on it to get the bars back. That's what I did the first build, but I ended up with a super-upright ride with nearly ya 90-degree back. I know that's what Grant and the Deacon and everyone seems to love, and power to you! But I don't have enough power that way, I really need a little more lean for power in the flats. 

For the re-build I used much lower and slightly narrower bars (inverted Chocos instead of Boscos), higher but shorter stem (Dirt drop 100 instead of Technomic), and different saddle (Narrow Berthoud). And it all came together! Just rode 10 miles over a mess of dirt racing a storm, and this Susie may turn into one of my favorite bikes of all time. I need more time on it to really be sure, but the long wheelbase is ridiculously great.

Think I'm going to order one of Grant's new 110mm faceplate stems to get a tiny bit more reach, and add some bar-extenders to give another 20mm back for more hand positions with some even longer BMX grips. Maybe big ass fenders. Then it should be perfect for back-country Vermont, at least until the snows hit soon enough.

Jim, I'm so sorry I can't sell this frame to you, at least right now. I'll let you know if I change my mind after a few more rides, but so far I'm excited. 

PS: It's likely a 2018 53 MIT Atlantis frame will be on the market soon instead! It's still that or my lawnmower.

Looks great Paul. Makes sense to give it a try, such a unique bicycle. Since Susie's first cousin, El Clem, already has Boscos, I wanted something different. I've got a few options, including Choco-Moose, but I decided to try VO's Klunker bars. It goes well with my BMX homage build, even though I never road BMX. Got inspired by a Kooka crank (not really bmx either) and went from there.

I love the new Nitto faceplate stems, thinking of a 65 or 85 in case I get tired of the bmx setup. Should work with wavies or other flatish bars, or drops even. I tend to leave most bikes be once I finish a build, but I may mess around with the Wolbis over the winter. Now back to that wheel build...
