Hi all,
I've been agonizing over trying to buy a Sam Hillborne today, and I think I've decided it doesn't quite fit what I want. Really the only space in my bike stable would be if I could replace my Surly Disc Trucker. I think I shouldn't try to make the Hillborne fit into that slot, when it isn't intended to be a fully loaded touring bike (feel free to tell me I'm wrong...).

So, it seems that the Appaloosa or Atlantis is really what I need. Does anyone have a small one they're looking to move along? I have a 78 cm PBH, so the smallest size of the latest generation would be what I'm looking for. I would also be interested in older generations as well, if available. A frameset or a full build would both be of interest to me.

Good luck to all who are going for a Hillborne today!

Hey... Not sure if you're still looking at buying a Riv, but I have a 2010 Hillborne in 48cm size (orange) that I'm getting ready to sell. It's a full build, so it would have all the parts, unless someone has the parts they want, in which case I will consider just selling the frameset. Let me know if you have interest, but hopefully, you've already found what you were looking for.  :)

Hi G.E.
I may be interested in your hillborne. Do you have any info you could share about the build/condition/price?
Thanks!
Gary

Hi Gary,

I bought the Sam Hillborne frameset from Rivendell (well, one of their approved retailers) in 2010, new. I've had it since that time. It's been used and has the typical paint chips on the frameset (which pretty much happened in the first 6 months of use, a couple were there just from shipping -- but I digress), however, it's in pretty good condition and has always been stored indoors when not in use. It was ridden more in the first few years of ownership and has pretty much been a back up or not used at all for the last several years. I haven't wanted to get rid of it, but we've moved and have very limited space and since I don't ride it, the decision has been made to put it up for sale soon.

As for the build, it's a pretty typical Riv build, I think. It has a Sugino triple crank (I believe it's the 46-36-24, but I'd have to double check) in either a 170 or a 172.5 arm length (I had played with the crank length at some point and honestly don't remember what ended up staying on the bike, so I'll have to double check, if you have interest/before I put it up for sale). I'm about 90% sure it's the 170mm, but I can't swear to that at the moment. The rear has a Shimano XT derailleur and the front der is Sora. It's 3x9 with Shimano bar ends placed on albatross handlebars. I plan to sell it with the Brooks B-17 saddle (and pedals too, unless the buyer has pedals they prefer... I believe they are VP Vice pedals on it at the moment). The tires were replaced right before the last time I rode it (which, admittedly, has been some time), but they appear to be in good shape (they are Schwalbe Marathon's). The 650B wheels are from Riv and were replacements (again, not long before the last time I rode this bike), so they should be in pretty decent shape too. It takes canti brakes... honestly, I don't remember the last time the pads were done (they have been done, but there have been too many other bike things that have happened, so I cannot recall when), so they may be due soon, but I can check those out and see how worn they're looking.  At the moment, it has a rear Nitto rack. I've debated whether or not to leave it on the bike to sell it, but it's negotiable if someone really wants it.

I'll attach a few photos of a couple of the paint chips, to give you an idea. I haven't cleaned the bike yet, so please ignore dirt, grime, etc (we had to transport it somewhat recently about 1000 miles on the back of a vehicle, so it got some road dirt/grime that needs to be cleaned up). I believe it was tuned up the last time I rode it, however, that's been at least two years now.

I'm not entirely sure what I plan to list the bike for price-wise, but I'm thinking probably $1500, OBRO. Buyer will need to pay for shipping, unless they are local (I'm in north-eastern Colorado), in which case I'd be happy to meet up somewhere within a reasonable distance.

If you have other questions that I didn't answer, feel free to ask away and I'll do my best to answer. Thanks! :)
