Midwest Riv and Country Bike Rally 2013

Mark it: May 31 - June 3, somewhere TBD in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and/or Michigan (suggestions?). There will be camping and high adventure on the backroads. Don't commit now, but keep it on the radar.

Houston County in Minnesota, LaCrosse and Iowa Counties in Wisconsin have nice roads, paths and on the Wisconsin side at least, plenty of camping options.  Spring Grove and New Glarus Wi and Houston Minnesota are pretty happening for small towns in the styx.

Matthew has a good idea.  Or maybe the Alamanzo as an actual 2 day route?  I'm probably in, although not on a Rivendell.  Unless the route was super flat, and I was staying in a hotel.

 

I'm sure some good ideas will come up during the winter.

I like the Almanzo idea. That route is beautiful, and has some convenient amenities.

Also, no Riv required. A "country bike", however you define it, of any brand will suffice. I assume there'll be various Surly LHTs and such.

Thanks for putting the date out there in advance like this Jim. I'm going to plan on attending. I'll be riding either my LHT or my Ogre. I love the idea of riding the Almazo course (or some variation thereof) as a two-day route. That's a beautiful ride!

Of course, like I did earlier this year, I allotted 4 days for the rally, when the "official" ride will be a 2-day Sat/Sun event. The more I think about the Almanzo idea (mostly in Fillmore County, MN), the more I like it. I'm envisioning that some of us will do the 4-day version, starting on Friday in LaCrosse (Amtrak) and spend the day riding through Houston county on our way to Spring Valley. Spring Valley has a hotel, restaurants, supermarket, etc. The natural camping choice for Saturday night is Forestville Mystery Cave State Park.

This ride will go a long way toward dispelling the notion that the midwest, Minnesota in particular, is flat.

My wife and I have been wanting to do some of the car free trails in Minnesota, on our tandem.  Definitely inn to inn.

There will definitely be an inn/motel option for the non-campers. But the rally route won't be all paved trails. Lots of rustic gravel roads, maybe a treacherous water crossing or two for adventure's sake. That said, there are many miles of excellent paved bike trails in that area, and that's a nice time of year to be there. Maybe the rally will be two-pronged: the adventurous backroad route and the more relaxing route on paved trails. Good idea.
