Hi everyone! I'm here, once again, to humbly seek out your advice. I've combed through the (many, many) results here on 1x11 drivetrains and still have two questions. I am using a silver2 shifter.

1. Has anyone been able to get a Shimano Altus/M310 to shift 11 speeds to a rear cog with 42t? I can get it to 37t but no farther.

2. If you have successfully used silver2 shifters with an 11-speed cassette and ≥42t cog, what derailleur did you use? Am I best off with the Shimano M8000? REI currently has a sale on Shimano Alivio M3100-SGS 9, Shimano Deore M5120-SGS 10/11, M4120-SGS 10/11.

Signed,
Stephanie, who chose parts to help her spouse turn the bike he has into a bike that he loves knowing that the OEM Altus likely wouldn't get to all 11 cogs on the new cassette (which, even with only 10 usable cogs gives him more options where he needed them than his previous setup)

There are two huge obstacles you will have to overcome to make this project work properly: cable pull and cog clearance.

  1. I do not believe it is possible to clear a 42t cog with the M310 derailleur (or any commonly available <10s rear derailleur) without a derailleur hanger extender. Adding an extender may be the easiest way to get this working if the derailleur can currently span the entire cassette, because...
  2. The 10s+ derailleurs that are available use a different pull ratio than the 9s ones and they require much more cable pull to move the same distance. This puts those silver shifters at a huge disadvantage.
There are a number of products like the Jtek Shiftmate that are designed to modify the cable pull, but with friction you can simply increase the diameter of the shifter body to pull more cable or modify/remove the stop that prevents the lever from going as far as it needs to. Microshift also sells shifters in bar end or thumbie options that are designed to index/friction Shimano and SRAM mountain derailleurs.
You are likely experiencing a combination of these issues (ie the current derailleur doesn't clear the 42t cog or move far enough to be in position to clear it) and that could be resolved by removing one of the cogs, installing a spacer behind the biggest one of similar size, and using a derailleur extender.

442536AA-AA8E-4498-B992-2C9B82D91A03.jpegHi Stephanie. I had great success with a Shimano XT M772 (so called “shadow” model) with Silver 2 and an 11-50 11spd cassette. I had to use a drop link (Wolf Tooth) but it worked like a charm and easily shifted through all 11 cogs.

Thank you, Erik! I was hoping you or Jason Fuller would respond--I saw several posts where both of you mention running 1x11 with friction shifters but couldn't tell from the photos which RDs either of you were using.

greg_L_rig - 51 cog mullet from a custumer from Rivendell.webp (26_).png

FWIW, I found this on one of the Grant's Blougs a while back.  I had no interest in going to a 51T cassette. However, I tried a SunRace 9-speed 46T cassette with the same configuration. It worked, but I did not  like the cog spacing as much as my SunRace 9-speed 40T cassette, so I switched it out.

Any one want to buy a silver SunRace CM983 11-46T 9-speed cassette with very low miles, less than 10 miles ?

I am very comfortable with my set-up now with 34/20T upfront and 1-40T in the back on my Clem Smith Jr. "L".

This may be a job for the new Acera M-3020 RD! Russ (previously mentioned) has a great video where he tries it on a number of different setups and it seems to run 42T with aplomb.

Thank you, Kim, for the blahg find! I'm thankful to have some options. This is great. Thank you, all! He went from the standard Breezer Downtown EX. The handlebars and brake levers came from people in this group selling off parts. He picked up some new wheels from Analog at a fantastic price because I thought the bike had a free hub cassette. Turned out it was a freewheel. Don't come for me for his cable routing choices.

Hello, I'm rescuing this thread in relation to the comment by "thetaperoomstudio" about running the Acera M3020 with a 42T cog in the back (exceeding the spec'd max of 40T).

I would like to know if anyone has run it with a 45T (thinking about the CS-HG400-8 11-45 cassette).

Thank you
