Thanks to list member's Chad, Phillip and Bryan my Bombadil has some new toys! Chad's LX/Synergy wheelset replaced a similar one that I cracked last summer (rear only), Phillip provided me the amazing Compass Switchback Hill tires and I'm using Bryan's 'Marks Rack' as my rear saddlebag support. A fun couple of projects will have me riding in style! I threw a bunch of pictures and first impressions of the tires up on my blog. I also threw on some random planet bike fenders that were sized for a 26x2" tire and they worked pretty darn well. With wintry slush and potential accumulation here in DC tomorrow I'm really wanting to ride the Bomba but may default to my studded XO-3, I'll have to check first thing tomorrow.
Can't wait to hit some trails with these tires. Thanks again to the list for continuing to fuel my tinkering!
Can you try that wheel set on that bike and see what the clearance looks like?

Justin I do have a 60cm canti-Saluki but I've got pretty firmly attached berthoud fenders with dyno light wiring running in them... So if might be a while before I try out this wheel set with the SBH on that frame. Those fenders pretty much max at a 42 hetre so I don't think these will go in. I do think Tom has done SBH's successfully on one of his Salukis though with no fenders...
I feel a bit lazy about deconstructing the saluki right now but maybe part of spring cleaning will give me an opportunity!
Thanks Erl!
I did ride today, first time in 3 years of riding this route I didn't see a single other cyclist but there were plenty of joggers out and about. The Bombadil did great and my impression of the SBH's is going up and up... I have plenty of broken pavement and mixed surfaces (no dirt) on my commute and the tires really transform the ride way more than my first impressions last night suggested they would. Honestly as I rolled out this morning, the first mile is a shallow down slope I felt like the bike was a fat slab of butter on a hot griddle... Smooth and fast. (but in control!)
I'm going to have to be mindful riding the parimotos that I avoid things that I'm just riding over/thru comfortably with the SBH's.
