I'm considering replacing the Soma Sutro quill stem on my Betty Foy with a Nitto Tallux stem from Riv to raise my handlebars a bit. But I'm curious about the different measurements for the Tallux stem. Riv sells the 10cm stem in the Cheviot/Sam build kit, but I notice that 11, 12, and 13cm models are available. What do these different measurements mean?

Thanks, folks.

This is referring to the extension(reach) of the quill. Pictures help :

So the larger the number, the longer the quill?

This is super helpful, Garth. Thank you!

No. The longer the horizontal extension, putting the handlebar further away from you.

The 10,11,12 cm. etc. refer to the length of the extension/reach, the horizontal part so yes, the larger the number the longer the extension/reach.  This is not to be confused with the length of the quill,  which is the vertical part, usually from the min. insertion mark to the top of the stem. This number is often not listed by websites.

Both of these number work in unison to determine where the bars will actually be.

HI Cecily,
The Soma Sutro has a quill length (i.e., "height") of 180mm; compared to the Tallux's 225mm.

(Interesting that Riv notes height of Nitto Dirt Drop w/10cm extension is 178mm.)

Good luck!

Hi Cecily,

Have you spoken with Rivendell? If I were in your shoes, I would call them up and describe what you want to do. Will at Riv helped me pick the right Tallux stem extension when moving from albatross bars to drop bars. I think they have helped a lot of people with the same question.

I went looking on their site for the Betty Foy/Cheviot expert now that Keven's gone, but couldn't find a name.
