Well well well, if it isn't another month already. Even though we collectively were not ready (I assume), it's happening anyway.

Here, the deciduous trees are mostly in some state of colour transition from greens to reds and yellows despite the fact that it feels like yesterday that it was still quite warm, even overnight. This photo was taken on my commute home today; it doesn't really display the local foliage very well but I was rather captivated by the clouds, which is another thing I love about this time of year. I am much more interested in cloudy days than I am in sunny skies, but I know I'm the weird one for that. I expected to get rained on both to and from work, but managed to stay dry both directions! These are the kinds of wins I cherish in this time of year.

Here's a couple of my tringlespeed RoadUno on an early evening ride tonight on a Fall night that identifies as a Summer night.

Great photos so far, Jason and Jim!

Mine isn't as pretty, but somewhat different; plus, this felt very much like a fall ride (about 10C).

This is my Roadini with its 'fast' wheels (Dura-Ace C24 and 30mm tires).  And my new B17 saddle (loving it!). What surprised me was what happened when I took this bike on a gravel road a little while ago.  On the Sunday I had my 43mm GKSS tires mounted.  They have tubes and I had them pumped to just over 30 psi.I did a 65k route on some scenic roads north of me, and there are some gravel trails and roads.  It felt 'comfortable' on those gravel roads but not something I would want to do for hours.  The gravel road sections are like old paved roads that they never maintained and then started throwing gravel on top of them, once a year (harsh is all I can say).  The next day I was riding with my friend and I always swap to road/fast wheels to keep up.  I told him about this gravel road that adds some scenery, so we took it.  I was commenting to him earlier on the ride (when only on pavement) how comfy this Vittoria tires are -- and that they're probably the best tires I've ever ridden (also w/tubes).  So we hit that stretch of gravel roads and guess what, they were noticeably more comfortable than the 43mm GKSS (30mm pumped to 60psi).  I think it's because they're very good tires with good rubber, and they're subtle.  I'm sure in a wider width they would be even better, but I was surprised that the 30mm was more comfy than 43mm.  All my rides lately have been great; cooler weather, clear skies, little wind, and the comfy saddle :-)

I have been in contact through email updates with the City of Yelm Projects and Programs Manager for the City of Yelm off and on for the continuing and slow development of this one particular paved bike, pedestrian and equestrian trail in my backyard for several years. It is called the Yelm Prairie Line Trail.

Last week, I contacted him via email and asked him what is currently happening with the re-surfacing of the Nisqually River RR bridge. He replied that this specific contractor is ready to lay down concrete sections over the RR bridge starting tomorrow on Monday, the 6th. I suspect that the old rails and spikes will have to be removed first. Needless to say, this is exciting.

The rest of the trail 2.6 miles across the Nisqually River is owned by the City of Yelm. However, the last mile or so going into the town of Roy is owned by the Burlington Northern Railroad. From what I have learned through the Forever Green Trails Coalition of Washington (state) Burlington Northern Road is standing firm in not wanting to give up a mile of railroad track for completion of the Yelm Prairie Trail to Roy.

It is all about federal grants funding for the this trail. The waiting is long and seems at times endless with year passing, especially now that the president of the United States has cut funding for all bicycle trails and more.

Yesterday, I went on a short bike ride down to the Nisqually RIver RR bridge to take a photo shoot of my Clem and the bridge before the construction begins on the resurfacing project that is supposed to happen tomorrow. Once this is done, I will return and share pictures of its completion.

Kim Hetzel.

Such a nice Atlantis. That’s how I’d set up mine if I owned one.

What is the saddle? What is the bar? What are the tires? What is the gearing? What are the pedals? What are the cages? And what can you carry in that minuscule seat bag?

Did all Atlantises have dt shifter bosses, or only the original model?

Some great contributions over the weekend all around!  Here is my Bombadil yesterday passing through the small Japanese garden near my place, on the way to meet up for a Coffee Outside ride. The maples are getting more colourful by the day.

The days are getting shorter to the extent that anything more than a short ride after work is likely to end in darkness. But I really wanted to ride up to a particularly picturesque plateau north of the city after work, despite knowing I'd be coming out in darkness. Absolutely worth it, as is no surprise. In fact, maybe it's even better than the long days of summer - not only because the foliage is more beautiful, but experiencing sunset up the valley in such a tranquil setting is on another level than a sunset experienced in town. Riding out as the light fades to darkness only makes one feel more alive.

The woods here in the PNW are mostly green still - dominated by evergreens (doug firs, hemlocks, sitka spruce, red cedars) as well as moss and lichen. The forest floor has salal and huckleberry bushes, both still green. There are vine maples here and there whose leaves have transitioned to yellows and browns, but their presence is rather meek.

Then I rounded a corner, a few kilometres up the valley, to a cluster of big leaf maples in peak transition. I had been searching for some yellows and this exceeded my expectations. As always, photos never do justice; being in the presence of these trees is what gives me life.

I didn't get any prize-winning pics from an absolutely perfect 90-miler today, the first really cool day of fall here. Too bad, because we had a lot of beautiful riding. Just this quick grab of pals Tom and Kurt on their steel bikes (Jamis and Gunnar), doing an impromptu gravel ride because the pavement has been stripped from Emerald Rd. Hopefully they'll get the new pavement on there before too long. In another couple of weeks it's going to be stunning foliage there.

Gosh I don't remember the last time I rode 90 miles. It's been a while since I've had a long day like that - well, I've been out all day plenty lots, but not with long miles.

I've been caught up in the foliage aspect of autumn but today's contribution from me is about the other major aspect of autumn: the weather!  I found myself under a rain cloud while looking at clearer skies in the distance.

Barely any signs of fall here, it’s still been quite warm.  I sometimes miss the fall in Michigan (cider mill/donut season).

I took the Leo out for the first real test ride today.  My only regret on this ride was passing a nice couple walking their German Shepherd off leash.  I unintentionally spooked several rabbits ahead of them that would have been a lot of fun for their dog to discover on his own!

Note: If I keep the Roadini, I need a bell as this Onyx rear hub makes it a bit too quiet on busy bike paths…

Another white + red panels Roadeo with black Ultegra! And with a threadless headset system! Deja vu all over again. Plus, the bike is displayed against a lovely background, conveyed by a competent photograph. Lovely.

If you can to say what about your Roadeo makes you like it, and why you chose an Ultegra (11 speed cable?) group, I’d be very interested to hear about it all.

Patrick, thanks for the kind words. I purchased this bike used from a list member, and it came equipped with this particular drivetrain. As far as I could tell the drivetrain was nearly new when I received the bike, so I figured I'd give it a try. I had never used a brifter-based drivetrain before. Prior to this bike, I've had only a few others - 1986 Nishiki Riviera GT, 2008 GT Peace 9er, and 2022 Gus Boots Willsen - not counting my wife's Clem that I ride from time to time. I've played around with different drivetrains on those bikes, including both friction and indexed systems, thumbies, DT shifters, and barends. Compared to my other bikes, the Roadeo is by far the most purely road oriented. The drivetrain feels like a good fit for this bike. Yes, it's 11-speed cable, and it works flawlessly. In about 2,500 miles of riding, I've replaced the chain once and turned the barrel adjuster maybe half a turn. Otherwise, it seems to function as reliably and shift as crisply as the day I received it.

Currently, this is the bike I choose more than any other. After many years of riding loaded down with lots of gear, I thought it might be fun to have a "light and fast" type of bike for recreational, mostly pavement rides. I've enjoyed riding it so much, though, that I've ended up taking it far beyond those original intentions. Though Riv doesn't recommend it for the task, I find myself steering off of pavement more often than not, taking gravel roads and light single track options whenever possible. The extralight RH tires (35 rear and 38 front) are just enough for a wide range of road conditions.

Similarly, I find myself strapping on a bigger handlebar bag for commuting and even some overnighters just because this bike is so much fun to ride. Perhaps some of that is due to novelty, but I think there's more to it than that. It just feels right under me. I think the best way of describing it would be that it feels like it has the right balance of responsiveness and stability for most of the riding I like to do. On primarily singletrack rides with more technical terrain or lots of steep climbing and descending, I choose Gus. Same for multi-day loaded off road touring. I use the Nishiki for commuting most often because it's laden with fenders, racks, bags, and, in the winter, studded tires. For everything else, the Roadeo just does it better.

I hope you like your new Roadeo Patrick, and I'll look forward to reading more of your impressions once you've had a chance to ride it a bit.

Greg: A clear, full, and articulate description of the qualities of the Roadeo, all of which makes me even more glad I was offered mine; thanks. I will certainly report on my impressions.

Your description of the perfect combination of stability and agility is exactly what I hoped to find in a derailleur road bike. And for the same reasons, I too find myself using my stripped-down gofast Riv fixed custom for more things than smooth pavement riding; I finally gave in to practicality and added a medium Saddlesack because I so often wanted to use it for commuting and errand rides.

On the high end, a complete Rene Herse for 2 million yen:  https://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/54837853090/in/dateposted/

On the low end, a perfectly decent looking step-through city bike, brand new, with fenders, dynamo lighting, rear rack, front basket, kickstand, integrated lock and full chain case, all for under 27,000 yen ($175):  https://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/54837784444/in/dateposted/

Ted, beautiful bike. When I bought my S12S around '78 I never knew of the America. That Fuji was my second drop bar bike, first being an Atalia I bought myself when I graduated college in '73. The Fuji was just after getting my masters.  I loved that bike and sold not when my back started being a problem in the '80's but I put a lot of miles on it in Brooklyn and later in Connecticut.
July 4th 1980, long ride with my buddy Spero.

Hey there,

I want to see if this works. I have created a  shared google photos file where I've dumped some Clem pictures taken between Sept 26th and October 7th.

I like this picture of "the Hood", such as it is.

Hey Gordon,

Your photo link does not work. I have tried several times

I'll give it another try but I seem to be out of touch when it comes to trying to link pictures on this forum. I've asked before but this time I'm serious! Any advice on the best way to share photos down here? It really has been a pretty Fall and I take pictures every time I ride. I think my Clem may be rivalling the Romulus for my most photogenic bicycle. Rivendells are like that.

Ted, one more great looking machine in your fleet. Gorgeous setting too.

Much as I love riding in Wisconsin, it always makes me catch my breath a bit when I come home.

From the Bay State last weekend to the Golden State this weekend. Not the best air quality in LA today but nicely cool in the morning for a ride up Cherry Canyon. West Coast Sam hasn’t lost any of his charm.

iPhone 16e is new to me. Way better camera than my old SE.
