Platform bike racks, again

I've read a few of the conversations about best platform rack for hitch, but to be honest, my head is spinning! Just when I think I have narrowed down what to get, I run into another issue with the rack for one reason or another.

SO, who is using *which* platform rear rack for bikes with front racks and baskets? I was just about to buy the Thule rack and then it occurred to me that the hook over the wheel might not work with my bikes, all but my son's have a front rack and basket.

The One Up looks nice?

I need to carry four bikes on the back as I can no longer lift them to the rooftop. And don't want to scratch up my nice Riv and Riv-adjacents.

Thanks for any advice!

This is what I have (well - I have the two bike version, but same idea) and it works great because you can adjust each bike side to side as needed to avoid interferences, and the wheels just sit in the hoops and the hook cinches down on the top tube - and it works on step thru bikes too (used with a dutch style bike, no issues).  So no problem for baskets, fenders, and the like.

I use a 1UP USA 2″ Super Duty Double Rack and it works really well with my Atlantis and Nitto 32F front rack/Wald 137 basket. You can increase the capacity to up to 4 bikes.

I'm kind of in the same boat.
I need to carry 3-4 bikes, my wife's Specialized ebike with front basket and  fenders, my 64cm Clem L with a 52.5 wheelbase, front basket, rear rack and fenders, and a older Bianchi 700c step through hybrid with fenders.
Other times I'll need to fit my 26" wheel All-rounder with fenders, Surly Pugsley with fenders or my nice steel road bike on it.
Looking at various racks, many of them don't work with fenders.
The Saris MTR seems like it will work and they claim its fender compatible, but in reading the reviews there seems to be some QC issues.  and I don't know if the racks and baskets will cause problems.

So far my number one choice is the 1UP. it looks like it grabs the front wheel forward enough to not hit my front racks. The biggest front rack I have is the Pelago rack. It's quite expensive but looks like a lifetime piece of kit. Also seems to be sturdy enough to carry four heavier bikes, that's my only concern on a rack like the Swagman, for example that has the racheting hook that grabs the top tube, is that it can't hold the weight of four heavy bikes. My 12 year old is riding a 22" mountain bike frame already, so large bike are many years in my future.

I thought the North Shore looked cool but I don't think the "hooks around the headtube" method will work with my basketed bikes.

That said, I'm interested in hearing others' experience.

I have a 1 Up and it is great. They also just came up with an attachment that allows you to carry a bike with fenders which I just tried out this weekend. It works really well.

I’m wondering about the 1Up as well. Specifically whether it’s easy to toggle between my MIT Atlantis with its long wheelbase, genders and basket and a fat tire bike, ie haul the Riv one day and fat tire the next. Does this question make sense?  Tim P.

My MIT Atlantis fits perfectly fine with it's long wheelbase and basket. The rack accommodates up to 54” wheelbase and up to 3.1” tires in the standard configuration.

1UP offers a "Fat Tire Spacer Kit" for tires wider than 3.1” up to 4.9”. On a double rack, you could configure a tray for the Atlantis and the other tray for a fat bike with tires bigger than 3.1”.

No fenders, but 1UP has you covered.

The 1up-usa rack works very well.  The fender pad will protect the fender but the bike is not well secured when using it. The bike wobbles about within the fender and stays stressing both.  The other problem is --at least on my bikes-- the fender stays get squeezed and deformed.  Some bend others spring back but all get flexed and stressed with every mount dismount.  I've found it better to adjust the mount so it hits below the rear fender and then further secure the bike with a tether. The front fender has never been a problem.
