Hi folks, I'm looking for ideas on fenders. Also curious what the biggest size I can run is.

I've seen VO, Rene Herse, and Honjo. Any preferences amongst those or makes that I'm missing?

I have two sets of vo  fenders.

The snakeskin 650 b it’s 50mm wide and covers a 42 mm tire (measures 40 mm.)

I also reradiused the Zeppelin Zeppelin 650B to  26 inch x 55mm  Covers a tire that measures 47 mm .

Both are difficult to install, but once you get them on, keep you dry and are noise free.

They add panache to any bike.

Once installed taking them off and on is not a problem.

I have also for years commuted with Esge ( now SKS)  “ plastic” fenders

They are very easy to install and keep you dry (If you buy them big enough) They last longer than you might think.

They also breakaway if you get something caught in your spokes.  That’s not academic. It happened to me. It shattered my fender, but I didn’t do a faceplant.

I recently converted an old 700c bike to 650 B. To my surprise, all I had to do was adjust the Esge 700c with a flick of the wrist and voilà. I didn’t have to buy fenders and spend an evening installing them.   However, I would not show up at JPW's French fender day as  the fender line is terrible, but they keep me dry and I didn’t have to buy a set of fenders and spend the evening mounting them.

Bonne Chance fender hunting

I will have a post for a “hack” on reducing toe overlap  which does get worse when you go from 700 c 28mm to 650b 42 mm with vo/rene hearse/Berthud fenders.

Ease of set up? My favorite is PDW fenders. And they come with quick release tabs.

For looks on a Riv? I’ve used all 3 and they all look good. Can’t say I have a preference. Just get whatever is on sale.

If you plan on traveling a lot with the bike (ie. loading it into a car, onto a train, take apart and stuff inside a box, etc.), I'd recommend plastic fenders. Although I have the 26" wheel version of the toyo atlantis, if SKS has a 700c version of it, it might work well! Definitely not as shiny and fancy as any of the ones you mentioned, but there are definitely pros and cons of plastic vs. metal.

Pictured is my coupled toyo atlantis with SKS fenders and Compass/RH rat trap pass tires (26x2.3) and pretty beat up fenders that are a bit warped but I don't care:

Might I add that it's easier to cut pieces off that might mess with the chain line or rear rack with a plastic rack? It does its job~

Any of the fenders you list will do the job. In my experience SKS require the least amount of effort to fit while still achieving a good fender line.

You don't indicate if you're installing the fenders yourself but if so and you're a first timer keep in mind metal fenders require patience - again depending on your requirements for fender line and how much finesssing you need to do to for proper fit. It's a satisfying experience when you get it just right.

The link below is excellent if you're going it alone.

Best of luck!

I have the Berthoud 50mm which work well up to 38mm tire and ok with my 700x44.

For completeness, here’s a photo with 700x38 Barlow Pass.

Thanks for the recommendations y'all. Love seeing the photos! Some beautiful rigs.

Good call out on the plastic being better suited for quick removal. This bike won't be a traveler (at least via plane and rarely by fork mount) so I'm content to throw metal at it in order to have something sturdy and reliable.

I'll keep an eye out for any of the metal options to be on sale. Pics to come.

Cheers,
Forrest

I would second the Berthoud option. Since they're steel they're a little bit heavier than popular alu options. However, the quality difference between the VO and Berthoud is instantly recognizable. Honjos/RH are also great but are more expensive and require more labor to install. Any shop that can order from Peter White or Euro Asia Imports can get the Berthoud fenders in.

I also use the PDW fenders frequently and think they have some serious benefits. They are very easy to install and because the edges don't roll, they are easy to set up with a maximum tire size.
