My Appaloosa has a new blue fork! I’m now considering the options:

  1. Leave the fork as-is so the bike is two-tone
  2. Repaint the fork to match the existing frame color
  3. Repaint the fork and the bike: either metallic red to match my old Schwinn, or a blue-gray gunmetal

If you’ve replaced a fork, what did you do?

I thought you might like to see how those options might look:

Existing frame and fork:

Fork painted to match frame:

Schwinn red metallic:

Blue-gray gunmetal:

My inner environmentalist says leave it two-tone, but I do like the red.

Compromise (and inner originalist) says just paint the fork to match the existing.

I replaced the fork one one bike, but the bike and fork were both black - one reason to own a black bike, many replacement forks are painted black.

Whew! Had to take a minute after seeing that existing brown bike color! Took my breath away.

I vote for painting the fork to match, but if you need a change, that schwinn red would stop traffic. 👌

I vote for keeping the 2-tone. Get some panda pedals (https://www.rivbike.com/products/pedals-mks-new-2018?variant=32047969697903) and some Oveja Negra wack pack bags (https://www.ovejanegrabikepacking.com/collections/wack-pack-color-collection) and just fully embrace the patchwork style.  :) Really glad you were easily able to get a new fork for it though.

I'd color match the fork to the original paint.

Red.  Red Rivs are rare.

If it was me and I liked the caramel brown frame color, I'd save the red for a next frame and have the fork painted to match.

I'd rather not tear down a bike unless absolutely necessary. Keeping it simple.

Like hey, some times I'm hungry but not so hungry that I want or need to make a complete meal. Just a little bit of somethin' somethin' will do.

Hi Matthew — I remember that you were looking very hard for a double top tube Appaloosa. I'm glad you could find one. What's the story, if there is one? Never saw a post about you tracking one down.

I love that golden mustard color and my vote is to match it if you can. I do appreciate a mis-matched fork from time to time, can be groovy, immediately conveys there's a story there, but I am not feeling the mustard and blue.

And, few more things:

• Nice color replacement job here!

• If you re-paint are you going to skip re-applying new Appaloosa decals?

Hi everyone,

I just got my fork back from Rick, at D&D Cycles. After a lot of color explorations, I decided to paint the fork to match the frame--I like the butterscotch/mustard/antique gold color more than I realized!

I gave Rick the frame and a Pantone chip so he could match the color. I found four possible Pantone matches: 126, 132, 7557, and 7558. Of the four, PMS 126 and 7558 appear to be the closest match in both shade and direct sunlight, despite my iPhone camera’s claim to the contrary.

Rick did a fantastic job. Rick absolutely nailed the color, he gave me some leftover paint for touch-ups, and Rivendell picked up the tab. Thanks to Vince & crew at Rivendell, and thanks to Rick for the terrific work.

I’ll rebuild her over the winter so she’s ready to ride in the spring.

It just looks dynamite Matthew!
What a fantastic color.

I can't wait to see it built up.

I'm on the edge of my chromatic seat though. Which did you end up going with?! 126 or 7558?
(My guess is the latter)

k.

Thanks! Pantone 7558 is the closest, but Rick matched the color to the frame.

Thanks!

I took another look at the Pantone chips. PMS 126 is the closest match.

Hi Matthew -

That paint job looks really great!

I have a frame at Joe Bell's that I need a color for. I got a look at the DuPont Imron color chart - but my understanding is that Imron is no longer available. Joe Bell can literally duplicate any color - but I did not see a lot of options in the range I was looking for.

Can you give me an idea of where you got your Pantone chips from?

Thanks,

Corwin

Hi Corwin,

I went through my Pantone books and found four colors to match the Rivendell butterscotch color. I then taped them to the frame and looked at them in direct sunlight, shade, and on an overcast day, and PMS 126 is the closest match.

Another option is Mathews 12440 “Electrum” but it’s not an exact match.
