Now that my Appaloosa is sold, I'll be dependent on my road bike until the Boots lands (6 long months perhaps).  This road bike been converted (ie Rivified) to 650b and Boscos.  I have Babyshoe Pass tires tubeless on it at the moment.  It rides very nice.  They feel a bit too delicate for  gravel trails.  I happen to have another set of wheels.  Thinking of putting on some tires on it, with inner tubes.  Any recommendations for tires in 42mm or slightly wider?

I rode Barlow Pass el on all kinds of dirt roads and trails around here. Are there ones that are too much for them? Sure. That's why I shifted to Steilacoom els and never looked back. Ride the slicks to the nub the shift to Rene Herse nobbies is my suggestion.

With abandon,
Patrick

What about Simworks Homage tires? Perhaps they are a good compromise with both semi slick tread and knobbies.

Hey Ash,

Pasela 42mm are nice. there are some folding bead version. More on the tougher side. My favorite to ride that strikes a good balance between supple and tough are Grand Bois Hetres, I've ridden on some light gravel roads.

I find the Panaracer T-serve in 650bx42 to be a nice balance between durability and comfort. Not as supple as Rene Herse/Compass tired but way less stiff than, say, Schwalbe Marathon and the like. And pretty affordable.

All, THANK YOU for your suggestions!

Most of the time my use is roughly 60% tarmac and 40% gravel.  Hence more inclined toward T-Serve, Pasela, Fatty Rumpkin and Homage.

If you happen to have the above tires mounted, would you mind measuring the width for me?  Please... I already have a pile of tires that I'm not using for one reason or the other.  Wanted make sure it will fit before getting the new pair :)

I wouldn't eliminate Rene Herse nobbies from consideration. They ride beautifully on tarmac and open up the rougher stuff at the same time.

Gravelkings are $50 and Analog has nothing but good things to say...just ordered some because I kept blowing through my Compass tires.
