Which Compass tires or something else do you really like for your Sam? I'll mostly be using mine for pavement and light gravel, dirt and grass. Thanks

I use Barlow Pass currently but I'm about to put Steilacooms on for a summer of trail shredding

I have the cream colored Hetres on. Highly recommend them

Barlow Pass and Sam Hillborne are a perfect combo. They ride amazing, and I don’t even use the extra light casing version.

I’ll bet Soma Supple Vitesse 700x42 would be even better though. They can fit, so why not?

Snoqualmie Pass 44mm standard weight. Almost couldn't feel the brick roads on the Cross-Florida ride.

My Sam runs 650b, Loup Loup Pass, 38 on the front and a Soma B Line 38 on the rear. I ride on similar surfaces. Quite happy with the setup.

Richard

Not Compass but Grand Bois, I use Hetres. I had to remove my fenders as they were to close for comfort. If you are using fenders you might want to add that info as it might change the recommendations.

Get that for the HIllborne. I am next time I get new tires (now that I know this). Upgrade from Barlow. This new info has caused me to change my recommendation.

I'm hoping with the stock tires the longboard cream fenders work. I am looking for a Compass tire or? That works with fenders hopefully.

I was out on my Hilsen with Barlowe Pass extralights. What an amazing ride. There were rumble strips on the shoulder and I purposely ran over them just to marvel at how the Compass tires just make them a complete non-issue.

I love my Barlow Pass Extralights.  The Bon Jon Pass tires came out right after I bought them and I was disappointed that I missed the opportunity for thinner and lighter (last road tires I had bought were 23mm on a Bianchi).  Now that I've adjusted to my "fast road tires" being 38mm wide, I really appreciate having the extra cushion.  I don't think I'd notice a ride difference in the weight.

The Barlow Pass looks great with fenders, too.

Does anyone have experience with both the Compas Snoqualmie (or Barlow) and the Soma Shikoro? I have been thinking of going wider than the current 38's on My Sam and the Shikoro 42mm seemed like the right call, but now I'm wondering about the Snoqualmie too. The main difference (besides a tiny bit of width) seems to be a Kevlar layer in the Shikoro.

I haven't pulled the trigger yet because I would need to put on bigger fenders, but with the load in the rear child seat getting heavier and a mostly unpaved tour (Erie Canal) coming up this summer, it seems like it might be time.

Thanks,
John

Carla, here you go. The small trunk sack has been replaced by a basket.

Richard,

After seeing your Sam I have to say, "right back at you". Love the way you decked out the sage Sam.

Carla,

The fenders are the SKS fenders Riv sells (p50s maybe?). They look more silver because I ran a strip of the 3M reflective tape up the back of each fender. You just have to use a large hole punch to cut out where the rivets are located. Visibity is great with that stuff.

John,

There was a posting on the blug about a year ago of a black Sam they outfitted with 42mm Rock 'n Roads and fenders. Mark or Brian had to actually cut the fenders in to parts and attch part of it to the front rack to clear the brake bridges. Seemed challenging to me. I am able to easily get 40mm Mondials under fenders, though.

I ride Lou Lou on my trek 460 conversion and Barlow pass on my Vaya. They're both extra light and theyre both awesome. They're actually super tough too. I mean I take my vaya on seriously rocky single track reserved for mountain bikes and the tires have never given up on me.
