Hey all. My son's 20" 5 speed was stolen this week. He and I had
labored over it this summer, along with the handmade handlebar bag I
fabricated for it. Pretty sad.

Anyway before I jump into another build project I thought I'd see if
any of you have had any luck with solid kids bikes out there.
Recommendations are most appreciated.

You dont say how old / tall your kid is, but I just wrote about these on the iBob list:
I just bought 2 for my twins.   Great bikes, great company and I would buy them again.
They start at a 42cm.

FWIW, I bought my daughter the smallest Trek Skye;  since it's actually a woman's MTB, it's a 26" wheel, but for her, is kinda like a 29'er.  She was eight when I got it for her, not particularly tall for her height.   Thing that's nice, for her, having a dropped top-tube, the standover wasn't an issue;  but this is a bike that will serve her into/through high school;  I can raise the seat on it and ride it myself (and I'm 6').

Of course, your son wouldn't want to be caught on a Skye, but the smallest of the lowest-end Treks might work, maybe like an 820:

Slam the seatpost, and see how that does for him...

Right, right. Sorry. He's almost six, and exactly 4 ft. tall. Those look nice, but I'm pretty sure he's still in the 20" wheel size.

Why the hell would anyone steal a kid's bike. That's just incredibly low. Sorry for the time, $$$ and love you two put into it.

If you're looking for a regular MTB type kid bike, I'm partial to Specialized Hotrock bikes. They're pretty good. Not super heavy, plenty sturdy, look cool. They have a 20" w/ a solid fork (also one w/ FS if you want it). Looks like a good bike:  http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bikes/kids/hotrockboys/hotrock206speedstreetboys

Their 24" model is really good as well when the time comes. Lots of low-used used ones out there as well, priced around $150 (We have two!).

Also check your local CL for 20" bikes. There are plenty of good ones out there. KHS, Giant, Big T, Novara all have good ones.

My son has been on a Fuji Ace 20 for almost a year now, he got it on his sixth b-day. I found it online from a shop in FL. and it wasn't more than $260.00 total, shipped. It's been great for him, he's learned to shift (seven speed grip shift type on flat bars) and easily mastered hand brakes. He was a little weirded out by the 20 x 1" tires but soon forgot all about it after winning a race on father's day in Harlem ... kids, boys anyway, I think, like to go fast! The thing pulls in compliments like a magnet also, which, tends to build confidence in little guys. He's going to outgrow it quick though. They make a 24" wheel version with drop bars and a 650c too. I think Fuji makes a lot of them, which is why you can find them cheaply if you noodle around on-line. Certainly less that the 24" Felt or the Redline 24.

+1 on the hotrock. Found 1 on CL and my son loves it.  As already stated, weight isn't bad, and having 6 speeds helps them learn to shift as well.
