I've signed up for my next big ride, which should be comparatively easy after my last one.  The Uvas Gold 200k is on December 2nd.  It's completely paved, and has ONLY 7200 feet of climbing.  Most of the climbing is in the first 45 miles and includes a summit of Mount Hamilton overlooking the San Jose-Fremont area.  I'm going to ride my Sam Hillborne.  I'm also going to try a new experiment:  this will be my first 200k brevet on a 1x road bike.  I've swapped things around and now my Hillborne is a 1x9, with a 42T narrow/wide ring and an 11-32 9-speed cassette.

By my calculations, my gears range between 36 and 105 inches with the center cog at 64 inches.  I think that will be plenty for this course, but we'll see.  I'm contemplating a 1x10 build coming up in the not-too-distant future.

Should work out.

One of the few 1x setups that is pleasing to my eyes. Looks proportionally correct. Just an aesthetic opinion, not based on science or magic. I think it’s the sub10 cassette.

ANYWAY: always happy to see your goal oriented tinkering - can’t wait for the report.

I've been considering doing this to my Hillborne as well.  I also remember you posting once that you had your Hillborne down to sub-25#.  How light is this configuration?

My Hillborne has been through numerous configurations.  The Campee F27 front rack that I have installed right now is fairly heavy.

By my bathroom scale reckoning, we're at 26.8lbs as pictured with the handlebar bag removed.  That 26.8 pounds is with the Campee F27 rack, with the fenders, with a Berthoud decaleur.  Aluminum fenders weigh about a pound.  The rack and decaleur are probably over two pounds together.  When I had it set up more as a cross bike, with no fenders, no rack and no decaleur, it was a hair under 24 pounds.

Good looking setup - I have concerted to 1x10 on my custom as well. 40t Wolf Tooth ring and 12x28. Works well for me! Good luck on the ride.

Here's a link to that cat's Sam that he Randonneurs with.

Do you like the Avocet saddle? I seem to see a fair amount of them in pics of steel bikes, so they must be popular.

What do you use for lighting, Bill?

Ian A asked a general question, but I suspect might have meant something specific.  I'm not sure what specific question he meant.

Today?  Today, I have a Light and Motion rechargeable battery powered thing that a friend of mine won at a 24 hour mountain bike race, and he perma-loaned to me.  I don't know the model and the model probably doesn't matter because it's old.

In general?  I move around this battery powered thing to whatever bike I'm riding, if the bike I'm riding has no dynamo.  Many of my bikes have a dynamo hub.  I set up this bike and my Rosco Bubbe Road with the same rims, so those two bikes can swap front wheels.  One has a Dura Ace hub, and the other has a Son Deluxe dynamo hub.  So, sometimes I run this bike with a Schmidt dynamo hub and a hanging Edelux lamp.

Rear lighting?  This bike has a Dutch fender taillight.

Did you mean something else?

Hello Bill,

You decoded my rather too brief question correctly. I was mostly interested in what you do for lighting on the Hillborne for rando rides. The pictures of the bicycle in this thread don't show the lighting arrangement and at this time of year, daylight is limited for brevet rides. So I wondered.

It's snowing heavily here today, winter has arrived too soon. Please post a ride report after the upcoming brevet so the northern amongst us can enjoy vicariously.

Beautiful bike! Particularly love your harlequin bar-tape job!

My wife/I just did traditional bar-tape with twine and shellac on my Salsa Casseroll the Rivendell way. We did try to match the leather trim on my Gilles Berthoud handlebar bag. However,  we really admire your bar-tape with the alternating diamond colors at the bottom.  My wife wants to do mine again and also use an alternating scheme to do either the same thing you did or similar. It's way beyond my skill, but  she's an excellent gift-wrapper and makes homemade ribbon bows so I think that translates well to wrapping bar tape.

If not too much trouble, could you post some more pictures of your handlebars from some different angles?

Below is what she did for my bars. Not bad for a first attempt!
