Hey folks
Just wondering what the general consensus is for the best combination of fat and supple tires for 700c. I currently have Pasela 32c on it but would like a bit more cush if I can get it while not going full on Schwalbe tank.

Thanks!

I had 700x50 Big Apples on my Quickbeam.

Tight but it worked, and you need very true wheels. I've settled on
Marathon Supremes at 700x40. Very cushy and definitely less tank-like
than the Big Apples.

Let me urge upon y'all that as porky as the Big Apples undoubtedly are (I don't bother with the nasty, skinny 50s. The 60s I have are the LiteSkin model at a svelte 800 gr) they do roll very well for their heft even at absurdly low pressures.

My first foray into the world of supple(r) tires (after trying a few different breeds of Marathons) is with the 35c Soma New XPress tires. They feel good to me and I run them at 65-70psi or thereabouts. They're folders as well, which is a nice touch. 35c in the Soma is noticeably bigger than 35c on my Marathon Racers, probably closer to what Schwalbe would call 38c.

You might want to look at the Bruce Gordon Rock 'n Road tires - they are 700x43

The Challenge Parigi Roubaix, nominally 27mm but actually around 30, is
more supple and provides a much cushier ride than a 32mm Pasela.

I'm not sure Rock 'n Roads will fit on a Quickbeam or SimpleOne. Someone here was selling a pair they really liked, but couldn't make work with a Quickbeam. I for one wish they fit easily.

Challenge Eroica is a 30mm tire. I have a set waiting to be installed when my Jack Browns wear down.

Grand Bois Cypres is a 32mm tire. Very supple and fast. Amazingly so. But too delicate for my needs. I had problems with them..

Challenge Grifo XS is 32mm. Slight knob/pattern. No experience, but supposed to be the same casing as the other Challenge tires (light and supple).

Rivendell Jack Brown Green is 33.3333mm. I currently have them now and they're great. This would be the go-to place to start IMHO.

All the above are in the general vicinity of the 32mm Pasela but should feel much more supple. That suppleness comes at the cost of durability though. And at least double the cost.

I'm not sure they're still available anymore. I checked Challenge's web
site and found it was no longer listed. Given how plush the almost
identical, but narrower, Parigi Roubaix rides, I'm sure the Eroica will
be even more plush. Note, however, the PR is the most flat-prone tire
I've ever used, and since the Eroica is the same thing only wider, I'm
pretty sure it too will be equally flat-prone.

If so, then a really short product run. They just came out last year. Glad I picked up a pair, although hope they aren't as delicate as you found the PR to be. If so, back to Jack Brown!

FYI, here are some for sale, possibly get 'em while you can: http://www.treefortbikes.com/product/333222384290/421/Challenge-Eroica-Gravel.html?gclid=CLqs7Ieb_LQCFUjZQgodSDMAIg

If a 700x50 tire fits with a little clearance - then our 700x43 Rock'n Road tire should fit no problem.
I apologize that I'm not familiar with all the Rivendell models.  Here is a link to my blog page that has all the dimensions-

I was riding the Conti Cyclocross Speed in 700x42c on my Quickbeam when it was first built, and they were very cushy and felt light for such a wide tire.  I eventually mounted something narrower (WTB Slickasaurus, 700x37c) so I could mount fenders.

Morning All,

Wow there is not enough clearance for that big a tire.

I would never recommend running a tire which has so little clearance.

Please refer to my blog page for necessary clearances -

Sorry for chiming in inappropriately.

Bruce -

Those are excellent tires (saw 'em out at Black Mountain Cycles in Pt. Reyes Station).  Nothing inappropriate about sharing them here - there are other frame models which those would work on.

thanks for sharing.

I had the Bruce Gordon R ‘n’ Rs on my Mystery Bike (Proto-Appaloosa).  They’re GREAT tires – lots of grip, but still (miraculously) almost no road noise.  I just couldn’t make them fit with fenders and sidepulls (they’re fine w/o fenders).  Here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/8176186600/in/photostream

David's tire suggestions are exactly what I would have counseled.

It's interesting that the Challenge site doesn't list the Eroica anymore. That'd be a shame if they stopped making them — they are wonderful tires!

However, it looks like they've introduced another "gravel" racing tire: the Almanzo. Same width as the Eroica, but with nibbly tread, like the one found on the Grifo XS:

That would be pretty awesome too. Good options out there!

The R&R's look great on your SO. It seems that there is some
variability in clearance in the QB/SO line. I would definitely try the
rock 'n roads on my QB after the current tires wear out. If the BA's
fit, the R&R's should fit.

There isn't room for such a large tire... 'cause it's a road bike. There's something about the Quickbeam that inspires Tire Greed, though.

The clearance of my BG  tires on a QB are very similar to Andrews pics, with slightly more clearance.    I measured with a caliper and my BG are exactly 43 on a 15mm Mavic MA3 rim, which I think might be the original rim on the QB.   This explains the slightly better clearance bc the Dyad rim is 24mm wide.   hope this helps.   -Mike

That is very helpful - a wider rim will make for a wider mounted tire. Which makes me think I might be able to use my Marathon Supremes with a different wheelset... mmm, probably not.

Justin,

Jan has the 'extra light' version of some of the Grnad Bois tires now.... http://www.compasscycle.com/tires_gb_x_leger.html

Might be something to consider...

I actually followed Toshi's lead, and have swapped my Rambouillet onto 650b Hetres:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/leslie_bright/8351739256/
Has been good so far;  only have gotten a few 20-miler rides in yet  (my first wheelbuild, so I'm taking it a bit easy, keeping an eye on 'em until I'm comfortable on 'em).

+ + +

Have to admit, I wish I could get my hands on a set of the BG RnR's to do a test-fit;  I've got a sneakin' suspicion that they might do really well for another project, but would hate to buy a set to find that they wouldn't fit...

Have the Duremes on my SimpleOne and there is ample room.  Have been thinking about buying a set of Rock n' Roads for the bike.  Don't see why they shouldn't fit, although it may be a challenge under the Berthoud fenders currently on the bikes.

Bruce,

Thanks for jumping in! I've noodled getting some Rock 'n Roads for my
SimpleOne for messing around in the dirt. I've been under the
impression that SimpleOnes have more clearance than most/all of the
earlier-though-related Quickbeam frames. Mine at least seems to have
clearance for miles.

Looking forward to trying them out.

Justin,

Marathon Supremes would be my personal rec. after trying them on my
SimpleOne. The 42-622/700x40C model left room for fenders when mounted
on Open Pros - though I never did install fenders with them. They're
495g each, but designed to be as little tank-y as a Schwalbe tire that
will last forever can be.

I'm on Jack Brown Greens day to day, and there is absolutely nothing
to complain about, but if you like cush, they might not get you all
the way there.

This is an old saw for me, but I think there is a gap in the tire
market right now where a light, fat, and cheap(ish) 622mm/700C slick
road tire should be. My 650B life tells me there is a different
balance that the various designers and manufacturers can strike in
622mm/700C along those three dimensions, accepting the tire isn't
going to last forever or be flat proof.

Some people say Schwalbe Kojacks fill that gap, so you may want to
check them out, but they only go up to 35mm.

Good luck. Changing tires is fun.

Cheers,

Colin
