Schwalbe Winter Studded Tires Clearance question

Hey all -

I want to put some snow tires on my Sam, and love my Marathon Duremes, so figure I'll just go with Marathon Winters in the snowy vt weather.

I am not sure if I need to adjust for clearance on them though.  I run 40 Duremes under the SKS Longboard fenders, and would like to get a tire that I can just quickly replace without taking off the fenders.

Do you guys think that I can run the Winters in a 40 too?  Want to get the fattest tire I can.

(My Sam is a 64 cm 2TT beauty!)

I suggest the 700x35 for added snow clearance. I can't see any significant advantage to the 700x40 for winter riding. I've been running the 700x38 Snow Stud (on a Surly Cross-check). There was no logic in that choice, except that I sold out of Marathon Wionter tires, and had the Snow Stud left over. This is my 2nd year on these, and I like 'em as much as I've liked any studded tire.

Have Marathon Winter 700x40 on one bike (not the Hillborne) under the
regular SKS fenders. They fit. Barely. They "should" work on the
newer Hillbornes. The tires seem to run true to size.

Will agree with Jim the 35s will give extra snow clearance. However,
both my winter bikes have the widest studded tires I could cram in
there.

solid thanks fellas.  i can get a good deal on the 40's, so I may go that route.  any more actual experience would be welcome - particularly if anyone has supremes or duremes in 40, fenders, and runs the snow tires (so i can get an apples to apples thing going on).

any help fellas?  looking to find out if clearance is the same on 40 duremes or supremes as 40 winters (do the studs add diameter?  i can't really tell from the schwalbe website).

One more vote for 35's-    added snow clearance is good, but also, I find that if you go too fat you can get a floating effect on fresh snow.    Especially at anything over 10mph.

regarding clearance, it's not so much about clearance for studs as it
is clearance for the snow/muck build-up as Jim/Eric/newenglandbike
noted above. 35 is plenty big, and go easy on the tire pressure.
personally, the only time I'm really wanting studs is when I know
there will be significant ice on the roads. I've been using file
treads (challenge grifo xs) at low pressure for the past couple of
years with great results in the snow. it defies reason, but i like
them better than studded tires, which have a wagon-wheel effect that i
don't care for.
