regarding clearance, it's not so much about clearance for studs as it
is clearance for the snow/muck build-up as Jim/Eric/newenglandbike
noted above. 35 is plenty big, and go easy on the tire pressure.
personally, the only time I'm really wanting studs is when I know
there will be significant ice on the roads. I've been using file
treads (challenge grifo xs) at low pressure for the past couple of
years with great results in the snow. it defies reason, but i like
them better than studded tires, which have a wagon-wheel effect that i
don't care for.
