Hi folks!

I am planning a S24O for Sept and wonder if you have any recos. Dipping my toe into bikepacking so I want a nice ride and somewhat close-was thinking about Samuel P Taylor, as I don't want to go through any rigorous searching for reservations.

Any suggestions would be extremely welcomed!

Thank you,
Lucia

Samuel P. Taylor SP is perfect from the Bay Area.  Stayed 1 night there while heading home from BC, Canada in 2018.  Double check they still have the hiker/biker site(s) and if so you are golden.  The nice thing with that SP we didn't realize how close we actually were to "The City" it felt like we were in the middle of nowhere.  Didn't realize this until we got packed up the next morning and had a meal in Sausalito.  Have fun!

Jeff is spot on.  The hiker/biker site at SPT allows you to cruise right in without a reservation. You share the spot with other folks, but that is part of the charm. Last time I went, it was $7/person. Moreover, it's a pleasant ride out, whether you approach from SF or Petaluma.

It can be a challenge to find a place to camp within easy riding distance of the Bay that hasn't been taken over by homeless people. Places that charge money are likely to be much better in this regard.

From easy to difficult in my experience...
  1. Samuel P Taylor - hiker biker site
  2. China Camp State park - hiker biker site (but beware the wasps!)
  3. Pantoll campground in the winter (reservations close and it becomes first come first served)
  4. East bay park sites that require a phone call to reserve (Sibly, Briones outside of winter, etc.)
  5. Point Reyes - just plan 6 months in advance and you'll be fine
  6. Angel Island - tricky and you need to be flexible, but the ferry ride makes it worth it
Have fun!

I agree with all of the above (except for Shannon's comment).  I'll add:
Francis Beach in Half Moon Bay - great hike and bike site.  sometimes a bit foggy/windy.
Kirby Cove -  A very hard place to reserve, but it can be done w some patience!
Steep Ravine - A bay area gem!  Hard to book, of course, but I've managed to snag a cabin 3 times.  The campsites are top notch as well.
Wildcat Campground - A small cluster of sites along the coast.

Shannon could you elaborate on your experience?  When? where? I've never had this experience.

Thanks everyone!

I’ve been trying for the steep ravine cabin and on my second attempt!

Appreciate all the goodness.

Cheers,
Lucia

Wow Brendan - what a generous offer!  I've camped on Angel Island and it is amazing. So sorry I can't join you, I'm headed to Yosemite for a bike riding adventure...but I hope you have a fantastic overnighter, and please share some pics.
